They actually took him off hospice care for a few days, replaced his ICD with a plain pacemaker and then put him back on hospice. He did quite well with just that and eventually died from cancer a year or so later.
How long a battery lasts depends on how much it's used. Like a flashlight, if you use it all night, the batteries will run down quickly. If you only use it once a year, it will last a very long time. With average use a pacemaker/ICD tends to last about 5 years.
Hi, I had my ICD implanted in January also and I have not had real pain in the area of the ICD since about 4-5 weeks post implant. I would call your doctor as soon as you can to see what it going on. Is there any redness or oozing from the incision? If there is, you need to get this looked at right away.
There should be no numbness except maybe directly on the incision. You should also have been able to use your hand since immediately after the implant.
Best bet is to get this checked out soon.
I don't understand your question, but:
1) I believe bypass surgery (to replace blocked arteries) is not considered "open heart surgery".
2) I believe a defibrillator and pacemaker do not require open heart surgery.
Why do you want open heart surgery?
If you have an ICD-CRT device (also with defibrillator), your doctor can leave the ICD turned on and change the pacemaker (ventricular pacing) as a backup if needed (e.g. when your own pacemaker runs too slowly or if appears a blockade between the upper and lower part of the heart). You can discuss about this option to your doctor and define with him the pros and cons.

I am so sorry you feel you are depressed because of your pacemaker. I love my biventricular pacer with and ICD. I think of my pacer as heart jewelry with a purpose, I just wish they would figure out some way to put some sparkles on my pacer. HA Everyday I pat my heart and say thanks to my pacer and God. My pacer is my guardian angel and lifeline. Most of the time I forget I even have a pacer unless someone else brings it up.
A person in heart failure should be on a cocktail of drugs and usually a pacemaker or ICD is implanted, but even then it won't stop the heart from failing completly.
Currently to my knowledge stem cell research is only in the animal testing stages but looks encouraging.
As to why her doctor did not order a pacemaker I can only guess he assumed her case was too far gone and the risk of the procedure did not outweigh the benefits.

ive recently had a duel chamber pacemaker installed, which im gr8full4 because no dr untill now has been willing to get it4me (i have sick sinus syndrome, mvp, 3 valves regurgitating, chf & right circumflex artery missing). however since the pacemaker ive been getting a-fib & flutters with my hr jumping to120 bpm & my other symptoms (fainting, etc) getting worse.

It depends on what your bone structure is like and what unit they put in, you can't see mine but I'm larger breasted and it doesn't even show. My incision is about 5 inches wide and had toned down alot since i got mine put in back in August 2009; the scar has faded alot to barely noticeable.
I had a pacemaker implanted two weeks ago. I am perhaps being overly cautious, but how easily are the leads dislodged? I have been careful to keep my left arm from rising above shoulder level, and sleep with a sling in place. I am left handed and it is a chore, but I understand that I am to keep it below shoulder level for a month. Is there a warning system in palce that will tell me if a lead becomes dislodged?
ICD may be not treating Long QT but pacemaker would. My cardio told me as far as my pacemaker works, it cover everything in my heart. My holter monitor showed my QTc 675 and they said "normal". I got a pacemaker and it is nothing to be worry about. I only on Glipizide 2.5mg (diabetes) twice a day while I had my holter on.
I had a pacemaker placed 4 months ago. Since then, I have a lot of pain and burning sensation in and around the area of the pacemaker. It feels like someone's holding a hot match against my skin in one particular area. I have sick sinus and tachybrady. I take atenolol, digoxin and have the pacemaker. What was used? Was it an Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD), or just a pacemaker? pacemakers don't deliver enough current to cause a visible shock. An ICD could, but only during course v-fib. the energy from an ICD to correct v-tach is very low.
Great questions for her doc though, I would bring it up with them.
My Dad's ICD had a beeper. Honestly! Of course under normal circumstances your cardiologist would be monitoring your pacemaker, doing an interrogation of the unit and could track the battery life. My Dad had his changed before the beeping started. But they bagged it and gave it to him and eventually the beeper did start going off (just a tiny beep every now and then). He had to stash it some place until the battery actually quit.
hi every1, hope ur all doing gr8. i need both a pace & defib or an ICD due 2 sick sinus syndrome, mvp, 3 valves regurgitating & no right circumflex artery. ive finally had a pacemaker installed & the dr refused the defib/icd. since the pacemaker im having a-fib, v-tach & flutters. alot of my old symptoms are worse plus im getting new 1s!
