Avatar m tn Hi, Many disease processes can impair the heart to cause congestive heart failure. The most common causes of congestive heart failure are: coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, longstanding alcohol abuse, and disorders of the heart valves. Less common causes include viral infections of the stiffening of the heart muscle, thyroid disorders, disorders of the heart rhythm, and many others.
Avatar n tn My mother has congestive heart failure, pacemaker/defib, stent, only one working valve. They were not able to place a 2nd stent due to blockage. They did not do open heart surgery due to high risk and because her size (very thin). Recently, she was hospitalized for low b.p. , dehydration, and kidney function, low urine output, UTI. They replaced fluids and removed a lot of the b.p. lowering meds, including isosorbide, due to the concern of the low b.p.
Avatar f tn If the heart function does not recover after these treatment, you can consider the use of a heart-failure-treatning pacemaker (cardiac resynchronization therapy). This devise is implanted to subcutaneous layer (under the skin) and stimulates the heart. Some patients do not respond to all of these treatment. In such case, cardiac transplantation is considered. Many people with initial ejection fraction of 15% survive 5 years.
Avatar n tn I have an artificial Mitral Valve, Long QT Syndrom, Congestive Heart Failure, Tricuspid Valve Stenosis, Atrialfibulation with an AV Node Ablasion and Tursuads and last Pulmonary Hypertension.. The Constrictive Pericarditus is from Infection of the Pericardium I got after my first heart surgery. My Cardiologist has had my pacemaker reset in hopes it will help me get around and breath properly. So far I have been told 3 times they will operate on the CP.
Avatar n tn I think the confusion stems from the change of name from congestive heart failure to heart failure. I guess the answer to your question is it depends on the device. Mine Does. I hope this helps and if I am in error someone please let me know.
Avatar f tn My mother is 75 and has been in the hospital several times in the past 8 months. She has congestive heart failure and the keep her a couple of days and send her home. She's in the hospital again and they are giving her blood transfusion and have a catheter to remove fluid from her lungs. She doesn't go to a cardiologist and her doctor doesn't seem to take her condition seriously.
Avatar n tn He has had bypass surgery about 15 years ago. Since then he has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Today, he was scheduled for surgery to remove some colon polyps. Just as they put him under the anesthesia, his resting heart rate dropped to 30 bpm. He was barely under as this happened (he said that he could hear them start to talk about it). They did not end up doing the surgery and he was awake about a half hour later.
Avatar m tn A pacemaker may also be used to treat fainting spells (syncope), congestive heart failure, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A pacemaker implant is more for assurance of good, normal heartbeat than a remedy for heart failure.
Avatar f tn 81 year old female, congestive heart failure, diabetes, triple bypass 15 yrs ago. Had heart attack 3 days ago, retaining lots of fluid despite the multiple doses of lasik given daily. Heart cath showed (picture attached). Doctors said there is nothing they can do but give her Plavix and blood thinners. I just want to know if we should take her to another hospital or if it would be useless.

I am pre-diabetic, need two new knees - due to viral and osteo-arthritis. I have been told that my last C.T. Found three dozen polips - of which six are are about 11mil. In size. Doctor would like to remove all. My qusetion is about my angina.
1529337 tn?1292259331 I was Diagnosed 3 weeks ago with congestive heart failure now I have no clue what it is all about. I seen a heart specialist and he was more interested in my liver producing to much iron go figure, Anyway I still dont know what is going on and what I must do. I didn't even know there was stages of this thing. I would appreciate and advice i can get. Thanks.
Avatar f tn My Dad had to get a pacemaker...he was also on medication for his blood pressure which can also lower the pulse. If the doctor would have taken him off the meds his b/p would go up and can cause a stroke. His HR was so low he went into congestive heart failure because the heart just wasn't pumping enough to keep up the demands of his body and he was filling up with fluid every where and was so short of breath as a result. I really thought we were going to lose him.
Avatar f tn Heart failure management depends largely on the cause of heart failure. If congestive heart failure is due to systolic dysfunction due to either coronary artery disease, primary cardiomyopathy or valvular heart disease the treatment mostly consisting of medical therapy and in the case of coronary artery disease or valvular diseaes of intervention or surgery.
Avatar m tn I had a triple bypass at the Memphis VA during 2008. Two months later, I had to have 2 stints placed in 2 arteries because of congestive heart failure. An artery was done that did not need done, by pass failed. An artery that needed done, nothing was done. The VA admitted in writing was the case, but because it was not done malishiously, the were not liable for the surgery. I had health insurance at the time that was billed by the VA.
Avatar m tn I'm sure you are very worried. Let me try to help.............a bit. First of all - I have experienced Pulmonary Edema on 2 serious occasions in '08. Both - life threatening..........the second - so life threatening that I experienced Respiratory Failure at my local hospital and had to be airlifted to the central hospital here in Maine. I was put in a coma and was not expected to live. I am a 58 y.o. male with an Ejection Fraction of 10-15% since '03.
Avatar n tn My father is 69 years old had a stroke 12 years ago, had pacemaker installed about 8 years ago, he has had a couple heart attacks. he also has congestive heart failure and is always in atrial fib. His heart is now working at 15 percent. i was wondering if there is any medication or what can be done to have his heart pump stronger so he doesnt continue to build fluid in his body. He currently takes lasix, aldactone and coumadin.
291222 tn?1210048328 I am 28 and I have recently been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. In October 2007 I was told I had an ejection fraction of 38% and in February I had a repeat echo at which time I was told I had an ejection fraction of 34%. I have had a pacemaker since June 2006 and now the doctor is telling me I need an ICD. I have constant swelling even though I am taking Lasix twice a day. I have been having increased shortness of breath and a pressure like feeling in my chest mainly at night.
Avatar m tn My name is Mike. I have been in the military for almost 20 years now. This past June I was in for surgery for ventral Hernia and while I was under that when everything started going down. My EF % was 10-15%. The doctor told me that I have CHF with a Left bundle blockage. They told me that a virus was most likely the cause. I never had any symptoms prior to June. I was in the hospital for surgery in January 2013 for Lower Bowel Obstruction issues and came out of it just fine. I am 41.
Avatar n tn What are the complications caused by congestive cardiac failure or congestive heart failure, after a non-cardiac surgery? How would these complications impact the patients recovery? Juliet.
Avatar f tn I agree with Ger57 completely. I'm guessing when they said your mom's heart is 'thick' they mean is has lost its elasticity. This translates into congestive heart failure. From experience, I can tell you once one is in stage IV, the kidneys tend to fail. In my case it wasn't the diuretics directly, she in undoubtedly receiving prescription-grade supplements of Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium.
Avatar n tn Hi, Your grandmother might be suffering from either a heart problem like congestive heart failure or possibly a lung disease. Since it’s a sudden problem and not a gradual one, it’s more likely a heart problem as the lung problems usually develop gradually. I’ll suggest an echocardiography to find out the status of the functioning of her heart which should definitely help.
Avatar n tn Anyway I went with him to his cardiologist and he sent my father to the hospital because he has congestive heart failure and he was retaining a lot of water. He weighed in at about 250 (He's 5'8") and weighed about 225 when he got out. This happened twice but he was still able to have a normal life. The doctor advised us that my father should get a dual chamber pacemaker with defibrilator implanted.
