Avatar m tn Here is an excellent web page discussing Bradycardia and possible causes. http://cvi.med.nyu.edu/conditions-we-treat/conditions/bradycardia-bradyarrhythmia There is a nice graphic showing the construction of the heart, the SA Node (the heart's natural pacemaker), the AV Node (discharges in reaction to the SA Node Discharge or can Discharge Spontaneously if the SA Node fails to discharge in time.
Avatar n tn Welcome to the gastroenterology community! Has he been evaluated for gastroparesis with a gastric emptying scan? How many calories is he getting each day? I don't think a gastric pacemaker would help because gastric pacemakers help with nausea and vomiting but they don't actually speed up the emptying of the stomach.
Avatar f tn I am a 40 year old female with arrythmias, sinus tachycardia my heart rate at rest is 110 I am scheduled to see an electrophysiologist on the 8 of july I think after everything I read I would rather have a pacemaker than a catheter ablation what do you think? I can not take beta blockers because of my blood pressure being too low and I need to get my heart slowed down because I have a rare lung disease and for me to have the open lung bypass my heart must be fixed first.
Avatar m tn From what you say you sound to be rather stable and even independent of the Beta Blocker.... that suggest to me you are at very low risk of a stop, and it seems your doctor also sees it that was as you are still scheduled for tests. I am not aware of any medications that would speed you HR up in a reliable way... you doctor surely knows. I believe a pacemaker or an ICD may be needed to give your that extra protection against a heart stop.
Avatar n tn Doctors tell us heart arrythmia may be cause - EKG confirms that her heart slows/stops. Pacemaker is recommended. Our issue is that she is very frail and weakened - unable to support herself or walk even with walker. She states "I am ready to go." Will pacemaker help her do better in rehab and maybe go back to her ACLF (independent apartment) or at least assisted living? Is she likley to regain function lost due to recent fall?
Avatar f tn Thank yu so much for answering,, i know what u mean,, i'm so sick of having to TRY all the time,, even try to talk and walk.. ugh! Doctors all said i have to get a pacemaker,, all except one,, he said i can still live the way i do and we'll install a pacemaker once i'm married.. but that was before these results came in.. im seeing him in a week again =) how about yu though? what solves yur problem ??
Avatar m tn The pacemaker paces the heart so if his heart is beating too slow the pacemaker will speed it up. It will be programed to regulate the heart and can be very helpful. I would recommend you talk to the cardiologist and ask why they feel this option is needed and what other options are available. Good luck.
Avatar m tn metoprolol is a beta blocker class of medication which works by limiting the activity of the heart muscle. There are beta receptors on your heart which react to stimulants such as Adrenaline, telling the heart to speed up. This medication (depending on dosage for effect) decreases the ability of those receptors. So if you are on beta blockers and a Lion jumped into the room, my heart would get to racing pace quicker than yours.
Avatar f tn I was walking 1 hour every morning qith enpigh speed to sweat but also be able to hold a conversation i no longer can have a conversation at that speed nore can i walk the hour im down to 30mins with a little less speed. My sleeps are getting deep that some times im not reaponding to bubs cries so i went to the docs. A ecg was done on the spot and my heart rate sat a 48bpm and had 4 pauses recorded about 90sec at a time.
Avatar m tn Q: Did any one experience high fluctuations and big increases in BP after the pacemaker (St Jude PM2210) implant? - I am 74 yr old diabetic with hi-BP. I got my first pacemaker installed around mid Sept, '11. After getting the pacemaker, my BP readings have been progressively worst week by week.
Avatar n tn Now a day many pacemaker can speed up the brady and slow down the tachy. I also learn from someone that a-fib not necessary is tachy. It can be a slow one too.
1867019 tn?1353467540 I have a low heart rate...while at my dr's visit today I had a heart rate of 44. The nurses kinda freaked out. I haven't been feeling well for months now and I'm sure it's because of my heart rate. The doctor checked my heart rate and my pulse and they don't match. He is referring me to a cardiologist. I'm only 33 years young and the thought of a pacemaker when he mentioned it scared me. I'm a fairly active person.
1188123 tn?1264478887 Hi Everyone, I am a 24, almost 25 year old female. Don't smoke or do drugs, social drinker, normal weight. I felt my first PVC after taking an ephedra pill my first year of college. One week after my first SVT attack, my cardiologist ordered that I have a pacemaker implanted, which I'm not really sure I ever needed. Anyhow, after the implantation, I started to feel what I described as "Skipped Beats", which I now know are PVC's.
Avatar f tn I want to know if acupuncture can help my bradycardia or is there medicine to speed it up a little ps my blood pressure is around 110 over 75 most of the time
351404 tn?1299489130 t exceeded 90 bpm up until today. The pacemaker can only speed up the heart but not bring down a faster beat. So I am digesting that fact, unpalatable though it is as an outlook However, I am now feeling chest pain on exertion and suspect this is stable angina as my father had this quite severely. Is it possible to have both these conditions? Anyone?
Avatar m tn Mom is 90 yrs old and has severe dementia. She is need of a new pacemaker battery. Cardiologist said they don't change batteries - the whole pacemaker is changed. She is using her pacemaker 95% of the day. Is is a good idea to change this? Can you still die with a pacemaker? I know if she could make the decision herself she would tell me to not change it and leave well enough alone. I don't know what to do.
620923 tn?1452915648 The shunt started working almost immediately, however, and was draining a bit too much so I had it adjusted yesterday. I have a pacemaker made by medtronic, and I guess the valve on this shunt is also made by medtronic ... so they have a lot of real estate in my body!!! Overall I'm happy with going through with it, but my abdomen is still very, very, very sore. Along with getting the shunt adjusted yesterday they did a urinalysis and I'm hoping for a UTI (haha, hoping! for a UTI!!
351404 tn?1299489130 I am really puzzled as to how these two can be side by side, ie why a drug to slow the heartbeat and a pacemaker to speed it up? My surgery doctor has just reduced this to 7.5mg (to see what happens).
Avatar m tn I thought if a human heart for example was beating in a lab using only its built in pacemaker, it would run at around 100 bpm? The vagus nerve is responsible for the parasympathetic system, which slows the heart down. So if cut, your heart should speed up? Was it a Doctor who told you the nerve may have been damaged? The Vagus nerve also controls of lot of digestive functions, have you noticed any problems?
Avatar f tn t handle it bit we decided to give it one more try and thought hey maybe it will speed up labor lol. Sorry if I am being a little graphic. Ftm and freak out bout everything when it comes to my baby boy.
Avatar n tn When I wake up, the pacemaker programmed to speed up my heart. For what I feel, it looks like the express train. Holter recorded as Ventricular Runs. That's what my EP (He's seen me more than 25 years) said, "other cardiologists read your EKG wrong. They don't know how to read your EKG".
Avatar n tn I use ventolin for my asthma and it raises my heart rate for about 10-15 minutes. Not a big deal. Did they mention a pacemaker to keep your heart rate up to a good speed? How slow is your heart rate? When do you go back for a follow-up appointment?
1569985 tn?1328247482 Today, staff doctor mentioned an av node ablation and permanent pacemaker. I am not happy with that and feel like enough time has not been spent on rate control. I am hoping for a cardioversion after the clot resolves. Any input would be appreciated. I am on Cardiazem 360 mg., digoxin .25 mg. annd Metoprolol 75 mg. (2 x per day).
Avatar n tn Your hear rate, take by me to be as low as 40, is quite low and is likely the basis of the comment about a pacemaker. Most people require 60 bpm and higher at rest to maintain good oxygen delivery. Some marathon athletes have rest HRs in the 40s and 50s, but the rest of us mortals don't have the powerful cardiovascular systems of these athletes. Medications to slow the HR, e.g., Beta Blockers and others, are common, but I don't know of any heart meds to raise the HR.
