Pacemaker risks stroke

Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker risks stroke

pacemaker

Avatar m tn I don't have the numbers for a Pacemaker, in fact I didn't know they require clot formation mitigation. Are you sure they do? Discuss with your Cardiologist. He/she can also give you any risk factors/numbers. My recollection is that permanent atrial fibrillation if untreated with a blood thinner increases the risk of a stroke by slightly lower numbers, around 2-3% annual chance, cumulative I believe. That is roughly a 20-30% risk in 10 years.
6644456 tn?1383330685 Currently I am taking Plavix and Asprin and now my Doctor wants to start me on Warfarin as well. This suggestion makes me very uncomfortable. I feel that a pacemaker would be a healthier alternative.
Avatar n tn The risk of a stroke is very low. The risk of a pacemaker is about 0.5 to 1%. The risk of success depends on the type of arrhythmia ranging from about 70% to about 98%. I would definitely encourage you to have the procedure done. I would at least have an EP study to make sure that the diagnosis is correct and that the risks from the arrhythmia are low.
659608 tn?1318289366 She should not have the cardioversion until the clot is gone as it could embolize (move) and cause a stroke. Likely a pacemaker would be a fairly simple procedure with minimal risks. At age 93 the main goal of therapy should always be to improve the quality of life with as minimal risk as possible. Talk to your mother and see if she can help with this difficult problem.
Avatar n tn She has to be careful to know what to avoid with having a pacemaker. High power lines can actually cause the pacemaker to stop working and then she would need to get another one.
Avatar f tn Atrial septal aneurysms are commonly seen in the setting of an ASD, and having both does increase the risk of stroke (somewhere on the order of 7-15% lifetime risk). This does not mean that everyone with these anomalies will have a stroke, and it doesn't say anything about needing a pacemaker (your doctor may have been referring to a different indication for a pacemaker, because ASDs and ASAs aren't usually a big reason for pacemaker implantation).
Avatar m tn I have been diagnosed with AF and doctor wants me to take flecainide and I take cartia for clot risk, sometimes I get dizzy and little headache sometimes, could this be danger of stroke or is it to do with AF. HAVE MOSTLY SLOW HEART BEAT AND IRREGULAR SOMETIMES.
Avatar m tn My question is this, since the blood clot that caused the stroke was apparently caused by the heart problem, would not her now having a pacemaker prevent a recurrence of the atrial fibrillation? And IF your answer is yes, then why would she need to be on the blood thinner for the rest of our life?
Avatar n tn Mini stroke (TIA) represents temporary stroke warning symptoms. A stroke can be impairment of sensation, level of consciousness, balance, or voluntary motion caused by a rupture or obstruction of an artery in the brain. In short: a stroke is a brain attack. TIA is not a full-blown stroke, but mimics one as you suggest. An Electrocardiogram (EKG) to confirm a regular heart rate, blockage of electrical impulses through the heart, etc.
Avatar n tn my mother had a stroke 10 years ago and had a pacemaker put in as a result of low blood pressure.she recently had her pacemaker check-up(annually) and they put her on morphine(4 days) even though she is in no pain.
368646 tn?1208393887 Can the reactivation of HSV-1 cause a hemorrhagic stroke (burst of cavernou hemangioma)? Are there any tests that can be done to show this? My Neurologist has done an MRI of the brain, but she says my deficits are from the stroke. After over three years and no progress, I'd like to explore this possibility, especially since many things worsen right before menstruaion. Thank you for your time!
Avatar n tn 5, as do 3 of my 4 kids (all under 14yr, the 14yr has a pacemaker). It causes progressive heartblock until pacemaker is needed in teens or 20s (he waited until he had a 15sec block to get his 4 years ago). He also developed chronic a-fib for the last 4 yrs which is part of the mutation. He has dilated left and right artiums and a left artrim volume of 82 ml. He has a BAV and ASD, both are mild.
Avatar m tn Dementia has increased over last 4 years, advance directive states no life support. Does one replace the difibrillator pacemaker in a atrial fib patient who no longer wants to be "hit" but die in peace. How long does the battery last when it is on replacemet mode?
Avatar n tn will there be personality changes after pacemaker insertion? My son is 24 and fears becoming"hyper",he now is fairly "laid back".Is this unfounded?
970256 tn?1249423974 i am a 27 year old female and i was told i needed a pacemaker due to pauses (4.7 sec) while sleeping and bradycardia (down in the 30's). i was told i had a second degree heart block. so i received the pacemaker. but i was reading some posted questions from other members with pauses and you say pauses are normal, so why did i need a pacemaker?
Avatar n tn Hi, If a person had a baboon's heart valve and a pacemaker and they were taking the medication clopidogrel for 7 years and then stopped taking it for a few months, could there be any ramifications?
Avatar m tn I have taken altenolol, metropolol and sotalol, the worst!!!! What risks are involved with pregancy? Everything I google regarding this condition the patients are 60 and over.
Avatar n tn There are no special risks associated with flying with a cardiac pacemaker. It is a good idea, particularly for people with circulatory problems to take a bottle of water with them. Particularly on long flights, it is very easy to become dehydrated.
Avatar f tn My son is 17 year old. I was advised by to input pacemaker by 1 doctor. Another cardiologist said that pacemaker can have side effects like leads leakage which ultimately can lead to heart problems. And other infections as well. They said he is too young to have pacemaker. Has anyone got any experience or suggestions please? Thanks in advance. Worried mom.
Avatar f tn I understand that there are risks to having any surgery. I am scheduled for surgery next Wednesday and am riding a wave of emotions right now. My sister in law had a brain tumor removed in 2006 and she had a brain stem stroke as a result. My family is somewhat apprehensive for me to have surgery after my sis in laws result.
Avatar n tn My father, 89, recently had a pacemaker inserted due to bradycardia. His PMD and internal medicine specialist started him on Coumadin afterwards. Since my step-mother had been hospitalized a week before with GI bleeding due to long term (20 years) effects of Coumadin, my father is reluctant to keep on with the medication now he's at home.
970256 tn?1249423974 For this problem I received a pacemaker but I still have problems that I have NO answer for. It usually happens while I am sitting at rest, I get a sensation of gravity that pulls at my head and chest, my left arm gets weak and heavy (cant lift it, feels like someone is pushing it down) my left side of face gets numb and tingly around my temple, eye, nose and cheek, feel like I cant breath, head feels tight like my skull is closing in.
Avatar n tn My mother-in-law, who will be 95 is April, was recently hospitalized has several episodes of arrhythmia at the hospital. the doctor recommends a pacemaker. What are the pros and cons of someone her age to have a pacemaker implanted?
Avatar f tn Yes I have had afib episodes. I have a medtronic pacemaker and Defrib unit. Been in there since Sept08. The pacemaker seems to really regulate the heart. Have not had any since.
Avatar n tn But they all diagnoised that it was not gengerous. Because it never caused heart pain or stroke or dizziness. But it make me very worry. I just had the heart exercise stress last month at the Heart Center of Siriraj hospital. The conclusion.is my heart performace is very good, no any sign of any problem and also no PVC. But I am afraid of PCB which happeds unexpectedly. How to prevent PVC? and can PVC be cured by medicine?
Avatar n tn Besides not doing anything and developing heartfailure or a stroke what are the risks factors. This field is new especially for those with altered anatomies. How does one determine the skill and expertise of an electrophysiologist? I am under treatment in an adult congenitial heart center. Is there a second level of expertise I should be seeking... Sincerly I want my life back.
Avatar m tn t beat regularly and often a pacemaker can correct the problem. A pacemaker is a small device that sends electrical impulses to the heart muscle to maintain a suitable heart rate and rhythm. A pacemaker may also be used to treat fainting spells (syncope), congestive heart failure, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A pacemaker implant is more for assurance of good, normal heartbeat than a remedy for heart failure.
Avatar m tn t need the pacemaker yet, but to avoid the chance of the thing getting worse and resulting in a stroke or worse I will be getting a pacemaker. I have been told that I can expect the battery to last for 6-7 years based on expected usage. I did learn that at one time there were batteries that lasted much longer and some for life. Are there any of these available, either in this country or elsewhere.
