Pacemaker risks after surgery

Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker risks after surgery

pacemaker

Avatar n tn Have you looked up PM/ICD surgery risks on the American Heart Association or googled it to see the risks? There are NO guarantees with any surgery - just risk factors; I had an ablation and I was one of the <1% that had major complications and flatlined during surgery 3 times, but flew through the PM/ICD implant and had no problems. Consider this - my PM/ICD was $81,619, leads $23,543 ($105,000 total) that doesn't include doctors, hospital, meds, OR, recovery etc....
Avatar n tn My mother-in-law, who will be 95 is April, was recently hospitalized has several episodes of arrhythmia at the hospital. the doctor recommends a pacemaker. What are the pros and cons of someone her age to have a pacemaker implanted?
Avatar n tn She has to be careful to know what to avoid with having a pacemaker. High power lines can actually cause the pacemaker to stop working and then she would need to get another one.
1078068 tn?1255906891 By a full maze, do you mean open heart surgery? That has some risks. I had open heart mini maze done when I had my mitral valve repaired. I still have permanent AFib... and a resulting high HR. You say you have a low HR, how is that related to AFib? Or, are you saying your low HR developed after an ablation stopped the AFib.. this doesn't make sense to me either. Sorry if having such a problem putting the (short) story together.
Avatar f tn My son is 17 year old. I was advised by to input pacemaker by 1 doctor. Another cardiologist said that pacemaker can have side effects like leads leakage which ultimately can lead to heart problems. And other infections as well. They said he is too young to have pacemaker. Has anyone got any experience or suggestions please? Thanks in advance. Worried mom.
659608 tn?1318289366 This seems very extreme for someone that age, who also is developing mild dementia. What are the risks to that age, and is it worth putting her through all of this? She has never had surgery, and is in fairly good health living alone at this time. The doctor said if not done she could faint, or fall and would not be able to live alone as she wishes.
Avatar n tn One of the common complications that we see in these patients is sinus node dysfunction, or abnormal function of the natural pacemaker of the heart. This is due to the large amount of surgery and scar tissue near the sinus node, which can certainly occur with an intracardiac version of the Fontan. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see heart rates this low in patients after a Fontan. At this point, the most important fact is that she is asymptomatic.
Avatar n tn Please include average ionizing radiation exposure and identify the latest types of equipment and how well it/they work - and in comparison to older procedures/methods/equipment. It sounds like some patients are less well after the procedure than before the procedure. Are there national efforts to collect data on patient outcomes so that risks can continue to be lowered and outcomes can improve and be uniform?
Avatar f tn I am wondering if the benefits will out weigh the risks at this point. She does not tolerate surgery well and I am concerned about the rehabilitation period.
Avatar m tn As effective as ICDs are they come with some risks such as infection after implant, device or lead malfunctions leading to further surgery, anxiety of being shocked, not being able to drive after a shock and some physical limitations. I don't know off hand the actual percentage of serious complications of having an ICD but I do know that it is quite low now. ICDs are even being implanted in very young children. In my personal opinion the benefits far outweigh the risks.
Avatar n tn Is it safe to have an MRI procedure following bypass surgery? I understand there are metal wires used to repair the sternum and am concerned about the MRI magnet.
17471205 tn?1456977307 Before this I had the shortness of breath, light headed, dizzy, major lack of energy, always tired, terrible chest pains. After my implant surgery I still get chest pains but not s often now. However, my dizziness and lightheadedness seems to be happening more intense now. Still get shortness of breath. And now I have no stamina at all. I walk to my mailbox and back and my pulse Is slamming in my whole body and I'm out of breath and sometimes dizzy and lightheaded.
Avatar m tn They beleive that it was the pacemaker that triggered the Heart Attack, got it on a Friday, Heart attack Monday. After the bypass surgery they found that the pacemaker was shorting out. Had it reinstalled 2 days later. Since the surgery I get periods when I am exerting myself where I run completely out of energy, can't take the next step.
Avatar m tn should I get a pacemaker, and what are the risks with lead removal and how can I lessen that risk, and will getting the pacemaker shorten my lifespan (even with the prevention of SA)? Thank you for any advice...

1569985 tn?1328247482 In hospital after lung surgery resulted in afib. TEE showed a clot, so cardioversion could not proceed. Staff cardiologist prescribing rate control drugs in the absence of my electrophysiologist. My doctor will be back tomoroow. Today, staff doctor mentioned an av node ablation and permanent pacemaker. I am not happy with that and feel like enough time has not been spent on rate control. I am hoping for a cardioversion after the clot resolves. Any input would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn But the pacemaker might allow him to survive the surgery.....however implanting the pacemaker is a risk in itself! Quite a lot of older dogs go through surgery ok. But it depends on what surgery, and it depends on their overall condition for their age. I they are generally well, the risks are greatly lessened. It sounds as if he is in quite bad shape. In my opinion, the worst-case scenario would be that he didn't survive the surgery.

659608 tn?1318289366 Should a 93 year old female diagnoised with a blood clot on her heart, with the top & bottom of her heart not beating correctly, be given a pacemaker? Avatar n tn Hi, My father underwent a double bypass and mitral valve replacement on Friday 28/08/09. Following surgery he had excessive bleeding in icu and after being unable to control it for 4 hours he was taken back to surgery to assess where the bleeding was coming from. Once openeing him up they were unable to find a source for the bleeding and by then it had subsided. We still have no idea where this bleeding came from. Any ideas???
