Pacemaker procedure time

Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker procedure time

pacemaker

Avatar n tn when I was last in hospital, an 87 year old man in the bed next to me had a pacemaker fitted. Before the procedure, he could hardly walk, even using a frame, and was always panting/going dizzy. Within one day of the procedure he was walking without the frame and wasn't panting. His colour returned to normal and I was totally shocked and blown away by the transformation.
Avatar m tn My father had cognitive changes resulting from his head trauma and the first pacemaker implantation procedure and the related sedation knocked him for a loop. He is ambulating now, regaining memory and stamina but is still quite weak. Should he wait or just have the repositioning done now? He will be going for rehab after hospitalization. This discussion is related to Pacemaker Lead dislodgement.
Avatar f tn Pacemaker batteries will not run out unexpectedly. When a battery is running low, the elective replacement indicator (ERI) is activated. Physicians can detect this activation during a routine office visit. In addition, the battery status and the general functioning of the pacemaker can be tested over the telephone. This is generally done every one to two months.
Avatar m tn I met with him last July, also looked into a FIRM ablation procedure at OSU. At that time they had only done 26 and I opted to wait. This procedure has a much higher success rate. I am now being seen at the Cleveland Clinic this summer to get their opinion. I don't know where you are located, but they are one of the best centers in the Midwest, and one report I read said in the world. The AV node ablation with pacemaker is a possibility also, and some people are in permanent afib.
Avatar n tn I had a pacemaker implanted 8 weeks ago; I was pleased on how I felt after the procedure. I was climbing 3 flights every day after walking from the parking lot to the building. Last week I underwent an av node ablation as the final procedure to correct my arrhythmia. Since, I started to retain fluids and, consequently, my physical activities diminished considerably. Went to the doctor for the fatigue and breathless issues and I was put on Lasix 40mg/day.
251395 tn?1434494286 Becuase of multiple failed medication trials for afib and my junctional rhythm my EP had planned to put in a pacemaker last Fri. and then bring me back to the lab in a few months time to do an AV-Node ablation. So, I checked into the Brigham at 6am and was told to wait in the family center in the brand new Shapiro Center for Cardiovascular Excellence until the cath lab was ready for me. A short time later a man came to escort a group of us to the basement for our procedures.
Avatar m tn We are trying to figure out if we should go direclty to the insertion of a pacemaker vs. an ablasion procedure. Since ablasion procedure may need to be repeated and flecainide (drug after ablasion) is questionable, should we just go directly to the pacemaker?
Avatar m tn In March my Mother had a replacement pacemaker box fitted. As soon as she came back to the ward she complained of intense pain in her sternum, she was told by the nurses that she was suffering from indigestion, they gave her Gaviscon. Although she was still in pain they discharged her two hours later.
Avatar n tn First of all, listen to what the cardio doctor say instead of your PCP. Cardio's speciality is the heart so I would take their advise over a PCP. From what I understand, having a-fib for a long period of time can cause damage to your heart. That is what my EP told me, and when my a-fib became progressively worse and more frequent it was decided that an ablation was needed. Now the AV node ablation is something I do not know alot about.
Avatar n tn The surgery was accompanied with a maze procedure to normalize the heart beat rate to normal. However, after the surgery she has still been kept on pacemaker as cardiologists said her heart rate is still on 48-55 per minute (which is quite slow). The cardiologists have suggested that if the heart rate does not return back to normal a permanent pacemaker maybe required. Can anyone please suggest whether to wait for the heart beat to be back to normal or go for the pacemaker.
Avatar f tn To remove the pacemaker itself isn't difficult. They make a small incision like the first time, remove the pacemaker and disconnect the leads, clean out the "pocket" and close things up. Or they can connect a new one before they sew you up again. If they also want to remove the leads, that's another story. The leads become rather embedded in the heart tissue and they don't simply slide out like unplugging the toaster.
Avatar m tn Had my pacemaker/defibrillator replaced a week ago. Doc had trouble threading leads into heart. I was under these cameras, which I believe are the same for heart cath, for 4.5 hours. Can this much radiation all at once be dangerous? I have been nauseated and dragging since procedure.
Avatar m tn My daughter had a duel chamber pacemaker and has had several cardioversions for A-Fib and she has NEVER had any problems with the pacemaker or leads following all of her cardioversions. They didn't need and replacements standing by or anything else.
Avatar n tn I've had a pacemaker for 28 years now. And because of the amount of time I have had my pacer I have gone into heart failure. My doctor is planing on putting a bivent. pacer in me in about a month. My pacemakers normally have lasted me 7-8 years. I was just wondering how long is the life expectancy of the new pacemaker.
Avatar f tn I was in sinus rhythm for about 30 days following surgery and then went back into full-time AFib. The surgery was in November 2007, so some time back. I have undergone one electrocardioversion in August 2008 and was in sinus rhythm for about 7 days, then back into AFib. I am currently just "managing" AFib with Metoprolol to control my heart rate, to keep it below 100 when at rest. I go into the 70s to low 80s when fully at rest. It too have an enlarged left atrial chamber, 5.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with PVCs in 2009, in 2010 had a heart cath to find an 80% blockage in one artery requiring two stents and have been on beta blockers since that time. Earlier in 2014 I had an ablation procedure as a result of my 24 hour Holter recording 36,000 heart beats. My 6 month check-up post surgery 24 hour Holter recording is 39,000 heart beats. The ablation was not successful. The cardiologist is indicating I may need a pacemaker.
Avatar f tn Just to add, yes it could very easily have been the pacemaker. A wire could have detached from the heart or the pacemaker may have needed adjustment. In rare cases a pacemaker may develop a fault, all of which a proper checkup should have detected.
Avatar m tn This procedure is similar to the implantation procedure, except that usually the pacemaker leads do not need to be replaced. Under local anesthesia, the incision is opened, the generator is detached from the leads and thrown away, a new generator is attached, and the incision is then closed. The replacement procedure is typically shorter and simpler than the original installation of the pacemaker. Once you are in the lab being prepped for the procedure, external pacing pads are placed...
Avatar n tn This seems like a very difficult situation for you and your family. The best way to begin addressing this question is to ask your cardiologist whether your mother is "pacemaker dependent" or not. Pacemaker dependent means that the heart is reliant on the pacemaker, and without it, the heart cannot pump fast enough to meet the demands of the body. (There are others who need the pacemaker infrequently as a "back-up", for the rare times when the heart rate slows down).
Avatar n tn I had an ablation procedure performed days ago for possible PSVT. I also had a pacemaker inserted. So far, I've been having episodes of tacycardia (pulses can be as high as 160 after a short walk), and facial flushing. I am taking Multaq 400 mg with Cardizem 30 mg BID. I've also been informed that another ablation procedure may need to take place due to the location of a possible ectopic node. I wasn't expecting to feel this way after the abalation procedure.
Avatar m tn t like feeling lightheaded all the time so my option seems to be this or abalation. the doctor performing the procedure says there is a 10% chance they could burn off too much and I would have to have a pacemaker. Is anyone out there going thru this??
Avatar m tn He indicated that the surgeon would determine during the procedure whether to use an unfixed lead (as was used the first time) or whether to try a fixed lead, and that there is a chance the lead will dislodge again. We are wondering whether it is worth having another procedure to improve quality of life when it is unclear that the approach and/or outcome will be different and the consequences of infection (though not common) can be severe.
Avatar f tn In Feb.2008 I had a battery change. Since that date, there is a lead outline visible in the skin, the PM is floating toward my underarm when I sleep on that side. I am uncomfortable but the functionality of the PM is working. My issue is that I have been given the option of having a smaller PM inserted, repositioning of pocket and the leads tucked under the PM. SInce I thought I was through all this in February's changeout, I am having a difficult time making a decision.
Avatar n tn My mother-in-law, who will be 95 is April, was recently hospitalized has several episodes of arrhythmia at the hospital. the doctor recommends a pacemaker. What are the pros and cons of someone her age to have a pacemaker implanted?
Avatar n tn Thanks for your response. Sorry to hear of the medical problems associated with the pacemaker. I believe anti-platelet medication should be stopped for at least 7 days if there is not any greater than the risk for so doing. Hope it goes well with your mother. Take care.
2053419 tn?1330412329 I have just started having chest pains around my pacemaker and this time they lasted almost 3 hours.. They are trying to decide whether to remove the scar tissue with laser? Should I be concerned about the new pain?
