Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker failure patient

pacemaker

Avatar f tn Is your uncle a heart failure patient? Furosmide is medication as a diuretic to prevent congested heart failure. The medication should provide relief for shortness of breath, and the only association with shortness of breath would be that medication is not effective and there is some pulmonary edema and the heart is not pumping effectively.... the blood is backing up into the lungs and causing SOB (relative to the diuretic ineffective).
Avatar m tn Renal failure patient since 2001 having thrice a week dialysis developed hyperparathyroidism with PTH at around 5000 which improved to 2000 by use of cinacalcid, had complete heart block this feb (bradycardia) and pacemaker was implanted. His EF is good 55% although RV function is poor.
Avatar m tn My question is this, could the congestive heart failure he has now been diagnosed with have been caused by the first pacemaker? It is unsettling not understanding why this is happening.
Avatar n tn Please can someone explain why a patient with a pacemaker kept her paced rhythm of 70 bpm with a fever 39.3 to 40 degrees C? I thought pacemakers could vary the rate to meet metabolic requirements. Thank you.
Avatar f tn I also got the 2 leads pacemaker and my av node ablated in 1985. The doctor said the pacemaker will pace out of any rhythms. As soon as the pacemaker is working, don't have to worry about the rhythms including V-Fib. Ask Dr McWilliams, he told some people here that long term pacing the right ventricle can cause heart failure. I don't want my heart fail... but my heart does make a lot of mistakes! Take care.
754751 tn?1241304207 there is a site pacemakerclub where you can ask your question also to get a second opinion on this there are pacemakers for several different things I am no expert just a someone who has a pacemaker for heart failure and mine does keep my complete heart going otherwise I would not be here for all pacemaker patients or people who want info that is a useful site just for patients and some pacemaker technicians answers questions there also

Avatar f tn If the heart function does not recover after these treatment, you can consider the use of a heart-failure-treatning pacemaker (cardiac resynchronization therapy). This devise is implanted to subcutaneous layer (under the skin) and stimulates the heart. Some patients do not respond to all of these treatment. In such case, cardiac transplantation is considered. Many people with initial ejection fraction of 15% survive 5 years.
Avatar f tn Now I have a 2 leads St Jude pacemaker. I also got 3 leads in my heart. The current pacemaker is number 4. It implanted in 2002. Not the new model require 2 leads. It depends how many leads that your husband needs. Oh, I rather say it depends your husband's EP choose how many leads for him! They're one lead, two leads. three leads and even four leads pacemaker in the market. Does your husband still has wpw? Was he had the open heart surgery for wpw?
63984 tn?1385437939 First off, BNP (beta natriuretic peptide) is simply a marker of mycardial tissue stretch (from something like heart failure). A BNP level of 500 for one patient may mean that they are in florid, decompensated heart failure, while a BNP level of 2000 may mean another patient is doing quite well from their chronic heart failure. We don't use the isolated number for much of anything, other than the initial diagnosis/workup of heart failure. The overall trend of the BNP is more important.
Avatar f tn Doctors will not operate on AAA or pacemaker replacement due to frailness. What can I expect as the battery on the pacemaker fails?
Avatar n tn Sometimes it will close during the first 5 years and for some, it never closes. If a patient continues to have the hole, there is the possiblity (POSSIBILITY) that he could develop chronic heart failure, however, this would be extremely rare and by no means, the norm. Patients would have surgery and the issue would disappear. Like I said, most people live normal lives even though they still have a small hole in their heart.
Avatar m tn Dementia has increased over last 4 years, advance directive states no life support. Does one replace the difibrillator pacemaker in a atrial fib patient who no longer wants to be "hit" but die in peace. How long does the battery last when it is on replacemet mode?
Avatar n tn //www.mayoclinic.com/health/biventricular-pacemaker/HB00084. Hope this help.
1569985 tn?1328247482 In this case the pacemaker provides the only beat signal to the heart, the patient is fully dependent on the pacemaker to keep the heart beating. I suppose this is one way to stop AFib, but I have never read anything that would make me believe a pacemaker is used for this purpose.
Avatar m tn t find anything. Originally I thought a pacemaker may be of some benefit, but the article I saw said that with Atrial Fibrillation, it only works for people that are Tachy-Brady (and some limited circumstances) Please see the following link (copy and paste if it's not clickable). Hope this is of some help, you've been through so much. http://www.webmd.
Avatar n tn My husband has a pacemaker/ defibilator and is having sever coughing spells that makes him feel faint and sometimes he will become very hot and sweat heavy and pass out but i seem to catch it when its about to happen and i can wet his face and sort of bring him back around before EMS gets here........
Avatar f tn My mom has congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension and Diabetes. She's been on diuretics her entire adult life. Over the past 8 years, whenever she got excessive fluid build-up and severe symptoms, the hospital would basically flush her out with heavy IV diuretics and she would be fine again. However, she has been hospitalized for 3 weeks now, was on a ventilator for 3 of those days and had over a liter of fluid drained from her back.
Avatar n tn metoprolol may not correct SOB! The pacemaker has corrected bradycardia!? The pacemaker will override any disruptions of the normal electrical impulses controlling the rate of your heart's pumping action. SOB is almost always a serious symptom...it was the only symptom for the admitting personal to put me in an emergency status, but I had other symptoms, dry cough, hyperventilating when laying down, etc . She said that is all that is needed is SOB.
Avatar f tn Is it typical to see a worse EF after procedures designed to help? Is there a problem with his meds? We are in a remote area and I'm wondering if our cardiologist is really doing everything they can. Seeking advice on next steps to improve his chances.
Avatar n tn I am a septuple bypass patient (April 2006), with CHF. I have an ICD/pacemaker and am 54 (diabetic). My EF is 20%. I have typical CHF problems but they are currently controlled by diuretics and diet. I do cardiac rehab 3x a week and take my medications everyday. I am disabled from my work of 25years (as a reserach scientist). I am considered a NYHA class 2 but was a class 3 up until a few months ago. I have had many echocardiograms and recently a heart cat.
Avatar n tn I have had all four valves replaced. I also was left with severe cardiomyopathy. I suffer from chronic heart failure since then and am hospitalized frequently. I am currently five months pregnant, and was encouraged to not have the baby, but I chose not to terminate. Right now I am hospitalized and am not doing too well. My heart rate is fluctuating between 150 to 190. The nurses are in here since mid week listening to my heart like every fifteen minutes.
Avatar n tn I've had a pacemaker for 28 years now. And because of the amount of time I have had my pacer I have gone into heart failure. My doctor is planing on putting a bivent. pacer in me in about a month. My pacemakers normally have lasted me 7-8 years. I was just wondering how long is the life expectancy of the new pacemaker.
Avatar m tn That is a very complicated question. If you visit the FDA site they have information on what are called "elective replacement indications", as well as full discussions on the various reasons for ,pacemaker failure. They also have detailed physician's manuals on various models of Pacemaker.
Avatar n tn He has had bypass surgery about 15 years ago. Since then he has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Today, he was scheduled for surgery to remove some colon polyps. Just as they put him under the anesthesia, his resting heart rate dropped to 30 bpm. He was barely under as this happened (he said that he could hear them start to talk about it). They did not end up doing the surgery and he was awake about a half hour later.
Avatar n tn my father had a heart attack in 1984, a pacemaker four years ago andnow is diagnosed with heart failure, is this normal?
Avatar m tn A pacemaker may also be used to treat fainting spells (syncope), congestive heart failure, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A pacemaker implant is more for assurance of good, normal heartbeat than a remedy for heart failure.
