Pacemaker failure of the heart

Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker failure of the heart

pacemaker

Avatar n tn Hi, A biventricular pacemaker is special kind of pacemaker designed to treat the delay in heart ventricle contractions. It keeps the right and left ventricles pumping together by sending small electrical impulses through the leads. This has been shown to improve the symptoms of heart failure and the person's overall quality of life. Traditional pacemakers are used to treat slow heart rhythms.
Avatar n tn s nearly 30 years ago and I think heart failure would have begun years ago from that. What you need to establish is the cause of the heart failure. Have there been more blockages in the arteries that haven't been treated? was there as infection involved? I get the impression that artery blockages have been the cause, hence the pacemaker requirement because the normal cells transmitting the signal have been killed. The question would be, why didn't they treat those blockages?
Avatar f tn My daughter was born with several heart defects.a pacemaker was implanted after surgery because she had complete heart-block. She thrived after her surgery and lived life to the fullest. On June 20,2009, when she was three and a half years old, she tragically fell to the ground. She was rushed to the hospital, but they were unsuccessful in reviving her.It was later determined at autopsy that her pacemaker lead had fractured. It was a Medtronic pacemaker. I have been in disbelief since then.
1467724 tn?1286430368 If her heartbeats are 15 and should be 60, she may benefit from a pacemaker which will regulate the rate of her heart to a preset rate and hopefully help her - also if it is heart failure she may need meds to help with that. Here's the forum on MH that deals with heart failure a bit more: http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn Is your uncle a heart failure patient? Furosmide is medication as a diuretic to prevent congested heart failure. The medication should provide relief for shortness of breath, and the only association with shortness of breath would be that medication is not effective and there is some pulmonary edema and the heart is not pumping effectively.... the blood is backing up into the lungs and causing SOB (relative to the diuretic ineffective).
Avatar m tn Hi, Many disease processes can impair the heart to cause congestive heart failure. The most common causes of congestive heart failure are: coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, longstanding alcohol abuse, and disorders of the heart valves. Less common causes include viral infections of the stiffening of the heart muscle, thyroid disorders, disorders of the heart rhythm, and many others.
Avatar f tn Modern pacemakers don't just "die". When the battery voltage drops to a certain level. The pacemaker will go into an "end of life mode" (battery, not person). It's sort of a last ditch conservation mode until the battery can be replaced. What happens then is the pacemaker will fire to a preset pulse rate. It will no longer take into account what the user's heart is doing. The is reported by some to be a very uncomfortable, miserable feeling.
Avatar n tn Ankylosing spondylitis can cause valvular heart disease, specifically aortic valve and ascending aortic disease which when not corrected can cause heart failure, atrial fibrillaiton and event ventricular tachycardia. Also, since the conduction system of the heart runs close to the aortic valve, when the valve gets calcified as is the case with Ank Sp, one can develop heart block and require a pacemaker.
Avatar f tn For some insight, chronic shortness of breath is a symptom of congested heart failure. I had congested heart failure 6 years ago, and the problem is due to the heart not strong enough to adequately pump into circulation over 50% of the oxygenated blood received from the lungs. CHF happens when something less than 29% of the blood received from lungs to pumped into circulation and blood backs up into the lungs and fluids leak into the lung tissues causing congestion (edema).
Avatar n tn Three years later she suffured from sudden heart failure. The cardiologist who was amazing and saved her life could not find a cronic issue with her heart. He said that quite simply it appeared as if the electrical impulses had just stopped. Because of this incident she had a defrib/pacemaker put in her chest. A month after she came home, she continued on imuran and her pacemaker went off.
Avatar n tn Wow, bummer. I got a pacemaker this year and wasn't really anticipating more overt heart failure off the back of the thing. Don't know how much more I can go this way. I got it as a "back-up/just in case" pacer and since then every interrogation has been about 80% paced. The bivent pacer will have roughly the same life length. Good luck, these new pieces are SO high tech smart.
Avatar m tn Your medication helps control high blood pressure and probably would be prescribed without a pacemaker. Also, the med helps stable the heart rate, but if the sinus node pacemaker output is abnormal, the heart rate could be slow enough to cause formation of blood clots and a heart attack or too fast causing the heart to be unable to pump enough blood into circulation with each heartbeat and cause heart failure.
Avatar f tn HCM is not necessarily an enlargement of the heart; it is a thickening of the walls , usually of the septal walls. Sometimes all of the walls are thickened without there being and obstruction. This is a terminal form of heart disease with transplantation the ultimate treatment. While Congestive Heart Failure is a systolic problem, HCM is a diastolic form of heart failure. This disease can be present at birth or can be totally sporadic only affecting one person in the family.
Avatar f tn With that aside, conditions or medicines that slow the passing of electrical signals through the heart but are not the result of heart damage. These conditions include: Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland), electrolyte imbalances, such as abnormal blood levels of potassium. . Heart medicines, such as beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmics, and digoxin can slow the heart rate. I have not found any side effects for the symptoms you have taking adderall.
Avatar n tn An EF of 30% indicates that only 30% of the blood is pumped out with each heart beat. Normal is 55 to 75%, heart failure is is dx'd when the EF is below 29% and that indicates the heart is (may) not pumping enough blood to meet the system's demand. When the EF is low the blood received from the lungs, and because it isn't pumped out by a weak heart, causes the blood to back up into the lungs and fluids leak out into the tissues causing SOB and a dry cough.
Avatar n tn The most common use for a pacemaker is to keep the heart from beating too slow, or stopping. Some times a PM is used when the heart electrical system has to be totally shut down, in which case there would be no AFib or other arrhythmia, but this is not done to my knowledge, to control AFib.
Avatar f tn Hello, The decision to implant a pacemaker usually is based on symptoms of a bradyarrhythmia or tachyarrhythmia in the setting of heart disease. Symptoms associated with bradyarrhythmia include dizziness, fatigue, reduced exercise capacity, and frank congestive heart failure. You should discuss it with your cardiologist and get a detailed examination to decide about the pacemaker.
Avatar f tn Permanent pacing right ventricle long term can cause heart failure. The heart is getting lazy and rely on the pacemaker. Mine one like that too. My cardio now programs to sense the Atrial and pace the ventricle when necessary. It reduces the pacing in ventricle. Before he set to 70's. Most of the time is pacing. Now I ask him to set it to 60. My heart is paced 20% less than before. Hope it helps.
Avatar n tn A person in heart failure should be on a cocktail of drugs and usually a pacemaker or ICD is implanted, but even then it won't stop the heart from failing completly. Currently to my knowledge stem cell research is only in the animal testing stages but looks encouraging. As to why her doctor did not order a pacemaker I can only guess he assumed her case was too far gone and the risk of the procedure did not outweigh the benefits.
Avatar n tn s odd that he would have gone from 14 until 20 BEFORE having heart failure and having the hole be the cause of the failure. It makes much more sense that he would have been in heart failure at the age of 14 and that would be the cause of them discovering the hole in the first place. I would certainly be asking his doctor about that and the possibility of it being caused by a virus. You are probably going through a living h***l right now.
Avatar f tn do you have an ICD/defrillator also?
Avatar n tn lowering meds, including isosorbide, due to the concern of the low b.p. When released, she had a lot of swelling in the ankles and difficult breathing. Although most of the swelling has gone down, she still has trouble breathing, just by doing small tasks, even as simple as getting up to get a drink. She takes 20mg of lasix and continues to have little urine output. Other meds include Coumadin, Lipitor, Coreg, Aspirin, 7.
1078068 tn?1255906891 Low energy. Should I undergoe a full maze procedure (little confidence) or a pacemaker. My heart rate is usually low 40's when not in tachycardia. Would my ventrical beat keep me alive if pacemaker failed. Is this risky?
Avatar f tn Physicians can detect this activation during a routine office visit. In addition, the battery status and the general functioning of the pacemaker can be tested over the telephone. This is generally done every one to two months. Pacemakers will continue to function for approximately six months after the ERI is activated, allowing ample time to schedule an elective replacement procedure. Your symptoms would depend on whay you had the pacemkaer implant and how dependant you have been on it.
Avatar m tn Now, I have heard and read that for some people pacing of one ventricle can increase the possibility of heart failure. I do not think that applies to one in my situation but even if it does I am OK with that. It beats the alternative. Keep us informed.
