Pacemaker failure case

Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker failure case

pacemaker

Avatar n tn I've had a pacemaker for 28 years now. And because of the amount of time I have had my pacer I have gone into heart failure. My doctor is planing on putting a bivent. pacer in me in about a month. My pacemakers normally have lasted me 7-8 years. I was just wondering how long is the life expectancy of the new pacemaker.
Avatar n tn My cardio turn off the AF suppression for me when my A-Fib occured. Originally, this pacemaker is a security/insurance for in case one day I got AF. Sound not match what he did and implanted that pacemaker. Now this pacer uses to pace out any AF occures (pace Atrial and sense Ventricle - DDDR mode). If one day it is not successful then he'll change to VVIR mode (permanently paces Ventricle) and totally ignore the Atrial. Will leave my Atrial fib to dead!

Avatar m tn My question is this, could the congestive heart failure he has now been diagnosed with have been caused by the first pacemaker? It is unsettling not understanding why this is happening.
Avatar f tn Which means my heart does not pump properly because my heart is enlarged. My doctor sugested the pacemaker in case my heart would just stop. I guess I look at it when its my time to go I am ok with that. I just don't think I am up to the surgery for the implant.
Avatar f tn Doctors will not operate on AAA or pacemaker replacement due to frailness. What can I expect as the battery on the pacemaker fails?
Avatar n tn A person in heart failure should be on a cocktail of drugs and usually a pacemaker or ICD is implanted, but even then it won't stop the heart from failing completly. Currently to my knowledge stem cell research is only in the animal testing stages but looks encouraging. As to why her doctor did not order a pacemaker I can only guess he assumed her case was too far gone and the risk of the procedure did not outweigh the benefits.
2093880 tn?1334813768 I just learned that my uncle had heart failure at 46 and had a pacemaker implanted at that point. My mom died at 28 and her other brother died in his early 50's...all heart attacks. I'm on a mission to figure out if I have what they had, but their's was just left untreated. The only link I have so far is that my uncle (pacemaker/heart transplant uncle) noticed that he could only play the 8 minutes in rec league basketball game, while he was in his mid 30's.

Avatar f tn Is your uncle a heart failure patient? Furosmide is medication as a diuretic to prevent congested heart failure. The medication should provide relief for shortness of breath, and the only association with shortness of breath would be that medication is not effective and there is some pulmonary edema and the heart is not pumping effectively.... the blood is backing up into the lungs and causing SOB (relative to the diuretic ineffective).
Avatar m tn t find anything. Originally I thought a pacemaker may be of some benefit, but the article I saw said that with Atrial Fibrillation, it only works for people that are Tachy-Brady (and some limited circumstances) Please see the following link (copy and paste if it's not clickable). Hope this is of some help, you've been through so much. http://www.webmd.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your comment about my daughter. Unfortunately, this is not the case anymore. She is in chronic heart failure with a transplanted heart. She has an extremely rare form of Glycogen Storage Disease known as PRKAG2. Take care and good luck with your project.
Avatar n tn I have had all four valves replaced. I also was left with severe cardiomyopathy. I suffer from chronic heart failure since then and am hospitalized frequently. I am currently five months pregnant, and was encouraged to not have the baby, but I chose not to terminate. Right now I am hospitalized and am not doing too well. My heart rate is fluctuating between 150 to 190. The nurses are in here since mid week listening to my heart like every fifteen minutes.
Avatar n tn On the other hand you mentioned that biventricular pacemaker helps for ‘irregular beats’. If that’s the case amiodarone could be a better choice as it may suppress some of the irregular beats (including most frequent complex arrhythmia i.e atrial fibrillation). Insurance coverage and cost of LifeVest should be also considered. I would strongly encourage you to discuss all of these with your cardiologist prior to making final decision.
Avatar m tn That is a very complicated question. If you visit the FDA site they have information on what are called "elective replacement indications", as well as full discussions on the various reasons for ,pacemaker failure. They also have detailed physician's manuals on various models of Pacemaker.
Avatar n tn Also, since the conduction system of the heart runs close to the aortic valve, when the valve gets calcified as is the case with Ank Sp, one can develop heart block and require a pacemaker.
1569985 tn?1328247482 I don't completely follow your post, but will give a few thoughts. Electrocardioversion (shock) is used to shock the heart out of AFib and back into Normal Sinus Rhythm (NSR). Even if it works there is no guarantee the heart will not revert back to AFib. In my experience the shock treatment is followed up with ongoing rhythm medication(s).
Avatar f tn My mom has congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension and Diabetes. She's been on diuretics her entire adult life. Over the past 8 years, whenever she got excessive fluid build-up and severe symptoms, the hospital would basically flush her out with heavy IV diuretics and she would be fine again. However, she has been hospitalized for 3 weeks now, was on a ventilator for 3 of those days and had over a liter of fluid drained from her back.
Avatar n tn my father had a heart attack in 1984, a pacemaker four years ago andnow is diagnosed with heart failure, is this normal?
Avatar m tn A pacemaker may also be used to treat fainting spells (syncope), congestive heart failure, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A pacemaker implant is more for assurance of good, normal heartbeat than a remedy for heart failure.
Avatar f tn Pacemaker batteries will not run out unexpectedly. When a battery is running low, the elective replacement indicator (ERI) is activated. Physicians can detect this activation during a routine office visit. In addition, the battery status and the general functioning of the pacemaker can be tested over the telephone. This is generally done every one to two months.
Avatar f tn I have a pacemaker and still have pvc's and pac's but the pacemaker is set to only let so much time go between beats so if there is too long a pause it will pick up and beat for you. Yes, they are frustrating but not dangerous at all. I also had pauses for seconds before pm and I know how scary that can be but don't worry!
Avatar n tn Do you have heart failure? Putting in a pacemaker is a big deal so it would seem wise to me to seek a second opinion. As well if you are tolerating the low rate without much symptoms and your syncope is indeed solely in response to environment then really follow what your gut is telling you. If you feel super uncomfortable about having a pacemaker put in then take some time to really think it through.
Avatar n tn I think the confusion stems from the change of name from congestive heart failure to heart failure. I guess the answer to your question is it depends on the device. Mine Does. I hope this helps and if I am in error someone please let me know.
Avatar n tn My husband had a silent massive heart attack almost 10 years ago, with a resulting loss of about 2/3 of his heart function, cardiomyopathy & congestive heart failure. He had a 3 way pacemaker implanted a year later, with a defibrilator, pacer & synchronizer of the bottom ventricles of the heart. He is on maximum medication and has been doing relatively well until about 2 months ago when he started noticebly dragging his right leg and not swinging his right arm.
Avatar m tn To add to what already has been said a pacemaker is needed when the system's natural pacemaker (sinus node in the right atrium) may be irregular. Your medication helps control high blood pressure and probably would be prescribed without a pacemaker.
Avatar f tn The pacemaker itself should not be a deterent from having an ablation. I've had a pacemaker for 6 years (because of an ablation actually), and then had another ablation about a year ago. Unfortunately, the ablations don't work for me, but I have IST, not SVT so hopefully they're more effective for that.
