pacemaker

1835862 tn?1318373061 For example, if the atrial pacemaker is not functioning, removal of the implant could result in death. Discuss this openly with your physician. The case for implanting a pacemaker is sometimes absolutely clear-cut and in other cases more of a precautionary procedure.
Avatar f tn can you improve - have a defib + pacemaker after sudden death - cardiologist isn't very informative.
Avatar n tn A person in heart failure should be on a cocktail of drugs and usually a pacemaker or ICD is implanted, but even then it won't stop the heart from failing completly. Currently to my knowledge stem cell research is only in the animal testing stages but looks encouraging. As to why her doctor did not order a pacemaker I can only guess he assumed her case was too far gone and the risk of the procedure did not outweigh the benefits.
1535596 tn?1292469791 Welcome to the club, I carry 3 cards, wear an ID bracelet, and live in constant fear that my defib/pacemaker is going to shock me for no reason at all. I also don't like the idea that the defib/pacemaker has to be removed upon my death, since they never mentioned it prior to the surgery. The defib/pacemaker is supposed to hold the BP at a constant, instead of allowing it to go up or down, yet my BP is all over the board.
Avatar f tn Just to add, yes it could very easily have been the pacemaker. A wire could have detached from the heart or the pacemaker may have needed adjustment. In rare cases a pacemaker may develop a fault, all of which a proper checkup should have detected.
Avatar n tn My father has had a pacemaker / defibulator for about 7 years. He recently had a heart attack. if his defib was working properly, should he have had a heart attack? His doctor just replaced his defibulator with a new one because it wasn't working. What I wanted to know is if the defib is controlling the heart function, why did he have an attack?
Avatar m tn the doc put me on a 7day heart moniter an im still waiting on the results, but he said i may have to have a pacemaker put in. but the thing that got me worryed was that he asked if there was any sudden deaths in my family. so my question is do u think i need a pacemaker put in and is there a chance that i may not wake up one of these days if it gos any lower an how much lower does it have to go befor i really should be worrying???
Avatar n tn My husband had a Medtronic Insync II Marquis pacemaker/defilrillator inplanted in 3/04. Even though he is end-stage & under the care of Hospice, we have been blessed with a pain free illness and would like to keep it that way. Can the defib portion of the pacemaker be turned off so that it does not interfere with a peaceful, painfree death when the time comes?
Avatar m tn Are you the Dr even if his HR drops to 26 or lower only once a month he stills needs a pacemaker. You can recover from death and you cant repair brain damage or organ damage from lack of oxygen to them. It just takes one really bad HR day to cause irrpairable damage or death. So yes I do think not having the pacemaker is risking his life and while you want to help him maintain his job and life he has a better chance with the pacemaker than with out.
Avatar f tn A pacemaker, even if functioning correctly, cannot always prevent worsening heart failure and death. The pacemaker will continue to deliver electical impulses to the heart, but if the heart muscle is not responding, or the impulses are not being transmittted normally in the heart, the heart may stop beating altogether or may be unable to beat strongly enough to provide enough blood flow to the brain, and death can result.
Avatar n tn My mother-in-law will be 90 in April. Her doctor wants to put in a pacemaker to stabilize her heart. She has lung cancer, quite a large mass but apparently not very fast-growing. She has diabetes, which might mean amputation in her future, and she has Alzheimers that is no long mild but not very advanced. She often recognizes my husband. Some days she seems to really enjoy life. I cannot understand the doctor's recommendation.
Avatar m tn Will a pacemaker completely eliminate death as a result of a SA attack? I realize that the pacemaker itself is a fairly simple procedure, however, as I am only 38, I will definitely need replacement leads over time, and the risk factor of lead removal surgery has me quite frightened. Most of the data available for CCHB is either old or hard to find. It seems that pacing is suggested in nearly every case especially with increasing age.
Avatar n tn The nurses are in here since mid week listening to my heart like every fifteen minutes. I also have a low grade fever for the past couple days. They want to give me a pacemaker. Why are the nurses listening to my heart so much and I feel like they should hurry up and put the pacemaker in sooner. My ejection fraction I heard the cadiologist tell my husband is 8. How do you suggest they treat my condition and what is happening to me. I feel like I am going to be on a transplant list soon.
Avatar n tn I’m a 79 year old active male in generally good health. Had a pacemaker implanted a little over four years ago to deal with a slow heart rate (low 40s), a-fib and a-tach. Most recent nuclear stress test showed slightly enlarged heart, good heart function, 55% ejection fraction. During the past year, pacemaker tracings disclosed six very brief episodes of non-sustaining v-tach, longest 5.6 seconds. What are my options?
Avatar f tn My son is 17 year old. I was advised by to input pacemaker by 1 doctor. Another cardiologist said that pacemaker can have side effects like leads leakage which ultimately can lead to heart problems. And other infections as well. They said he is too young to have pacemaker. Has anyone got any experience or suggestions please? Thanks in advance. Worried mom.
Avatar n tn Never had any heart attacks . Heart valve problems in family with other siblings. Can I expect a pacemaker later in years, my only worry is I will have sudden death from this. how big a possibility is that?
Avatar f tn My mother is 83. She has had irregular heartbeat for nearly 20 years and had a pacemaker implanted 3 years ago. Her last echogram showed her EF to be 20% and she has had several episodes of congestive heart failure. She is physically run down.....weight loss, loss of muscle, not to mention depression. Her cardiologist wants to implant a biventricular pacemaker. I am wondering if the benefits will out weigh the risks at this point.
Avatar m tn In March my Mother had a replacement pacemaker box fitted. As soon as she came back to the ward she complained of intense pain in her sternum, she was told by the nurses that she was suffering from indigestion, they gave her Gaviscon. Although she was still in pain they discharged her two hours later.
Avatar m tn Q: Did any one experience high fluctuations and big increases in BP after the pacemaker (St Jude PM2210) implant? - I am 74 yr old diabetic with hi-BP. I got my first pacemaker installed around mid Sept, '11. After getting the pacemaker, my BP readings have been progressively worst week by week.
Avatar f tn This would be a good question for your cardiologist but my guess is. . . that unless your heart simply can't beat at all without a pacemaker, you'll be fine. Most people get the pacemaker because their heart rate is too slow. But slow (say the 30's or 40's) isn't the same as stopped. So you can survive those few minutes while they unplug one unit and connect the leads to the new unit. My Dad had his replaced and he was in and out in an hour or so.
Avatar m tn I'm a 54 yo female who needed a pacemaker 10 years ago due to idiopathic 3rd degree heart block, I take no medications for my heart. My battery (now 10 years old) needs replacing. I've had 4 episodes of 5 second or less V-tach (according to the pacemakers computer) in the last 18 months and the doctors are wanting to do an Electrophysiology study to see if they can find out why I've had these episodes, since the echo and nuclear stress test preformed last week, were all normal.
Avatar n tn metoprolol may not correct SOB! The pacemaker has corrected bradycardia!? The pacemaker will override any disruptions of the normal electrical impulses controlling the rate of your heart's pumping action. SOB is almost always a serious symptom...it was the only symptom for the admitting personal to put me in an emergency status, but I had other symptoms, dry cough, hyperventilating when laying down, etc . She said that is all that is needed is SOB.
Avatar f tn 15 minutes into the test, I passed out and my heart rate was 38 with b/p of 64/28, I was told the top chambers of my heart stopped functioning. I have family history of sudden death, maternal grandparents, maternal aunt and two uncles but my mother is fine. I also have lupus and don't want to go on a variety of medications. Would a pacemaker be a good solution for my case?
Avatar m tn Mom is 90 yrs old and has severe dementia. She is need of a new pacemaker battery. Cardiologist said they don't change batteries - the whole pacemaker is changed. She is using her pacemaker 95% of the day. Is is a good idea to change this? Can you still die with a pacemaker? I know if she could make the decision herself she would tell me to not change it and leave well enough alone. I don't know what to do.
