255722 tn?1452546541 The spread of electricity throughout the heart muscle is possible because all heart muscle cells, not just pacemaker cells, are excitable. Usually, the heart muscle cells keep time more slowly than normal pacemaker cells. This allows the pacemaker cells within the SA node to be in control of generating and pacing the heartbeat.
Avatar n tn Hi, am doing some research. please can you explain why an 89yr old with pacemaker kept her 70bpm pulse with a fever of 40 deg.C. Also what were the metabolic implications for her? Many thanks.

Avatar n tn If the cells are dead, a cath would not be of any help. If the cells are hibernating due to low blood flow to the area, medication can increase the blood flow to the area....angina with stress and rest normal blood flow. Your symptoms, if any, would be the issue to correct. If you are having chest pain (angina) with exertion and rest relieves the chest pain that would be stable angina and medication can be effective.
Avatar f tn PVCs and PACs occur when heart cells other than the typical pacemaker cells generate an electrical impulse and then a muscle contraction and heart beat. These may occur rarely or in some cases very frequently. Similarly, some people aren't aware of these while other people feel very symptomatic with them.
Avatar n tn Nerves don't make the heart beat. Cardiac muscle cells are the pacemakers. There's a primary group in the atria called the sinoatrial (SA) node. this fires the atria. the discharge then travels to the atrioventricular (AV) node which fires the ventricles. What they are probably talking about is either ablating (destroying) the SA node or AV node. Both are different and require different types of pacing.
Avatar n tn Right bbb means that the usual route the signal takes to activate the muscle in the large right chamber is blocked. The signal cannot get thru the usual route. There can be different reasons, but it generally finds a different way around, through normal heart cells. However, this can cause a delay, meaning the right chamber is contracting slower or is delayed compared to the left. This is probably what they are referring to with regards to borderline.
Avatar n tn I had 23 Million of my own Stem Cells placed back into my heart muscle and vascular system. I was the 510th person to have this procedure done by an American Cardiologist. Unfortunately6, it can't be done in the USA because it does not have FDA approval!!!! I am awaiting the results of the 23 Million Stem Cells. Please note, these are replications of my OWN Stem Cells - not embryonic - so there is no rejection factor involved.
401554 tn?1270213756 Mainly, you need to talk to your doctor about this. Herbs and supplements are not regulated by the FDA and, given the recent news that some things that ARE regulated by the FDA aren't so well regulated, I'm always nervous about completely UNREGULATED products. I took Norpace for awhile. It is a heavy duty antiarhytmetic that suppresses the sodium and potassium channels causing the pacemaker cells to fire more "regularly.
329165 tn?1515471990 Hi, What is the condition that they hope to resolve with the Pacemaker? Often, a Pacemaker is used to treat Bradycardia, a slow heart rhythm, or possibly pauses in the Heart Beat. Yet you indicated your Heart Rate is around 80. What exactly do they want to implant the Pacemaker for? Be well.
Avatar n tn Many cardiac muscle cells can contract spontaneously, but the cells in the Pacemaker region are, during fetal development, the fastest-beating ones, and the fastest ones normally dominate the whole show. However, many of us have independent-minded cardiac cells that can trigger a contraction (a PVC) if they get the opportunity, and opportunity arises when the Pacemaker's rate slows down--as happens when you're cooling off after exercise, or when you're getting sleepy at bedtime.
Avatar n tn hypokinesis can also be the result of stunned cells. Stunned heart cells affected by a heart attack can be revitalized if blood/oxygen is quickly provided within a few hours to the area affected by an acute heart attack. Akinesis is different from hypokinesis in that the heart cells affected are necrotic (dead). Stem cell therapy may be helpful for that condition. Five years ago I had hypokinesis of the left ventricle wall and a low EF.
Avatar f tn Do you have a pacemaker? The best is to check with your doctor or pacemaker technician. I don't know what can it cause the heart functioning abnormality if you have the inverted T waves? Anyone knows? It also depends if you're a pacemaker dependent or not. I'm not a pacemaker depend. I go well with the equipment which marks "Pacemaker user caution". If I found my heart beats abnormally, then I stop using it and try again after the heart settle.
1293682 tn?1311956071 The condition was hypokinesis (impaired heart wall movement), and stent on at the time of a heart attack 6 years ago revitalized what is medically termed hibernating or stunned heart cells. If the heart cells are necrotic, it appears the cells cannot come back to normal....stem cell therapy is the only option. Medication will continue indefinitely.
Avatar n tn I agree with ireneo about putting it under the muscle. I had a pacemaker put in three weeks ago and my doctor recommended putting it under the muscle because of my age (36). He said it would be better in the long run but would take more time to heal. You should see if your doctor can put it under the muscle on the side you already have it on. Good luck!!
696415 tn?1228229959 The sinoatrial node (SA node) is a group of cells positioned on the wall of the right atrium, near the entrance of the superior vena cava. Cells in the SA node will naturally discharge at about 70-80 times per minute. Because the sinoatrial node is responsible for the rest of the heart's electrical activity, it is sometimes called the primary pacemaker, the natural pacemaker.
948996 tn?1245949077 My grandma is 87 years old, she recently had a heart attack and she has a pacemaker in... before she had her heart attack she broke both her ankles and when she went for an x-ray the doctor also told her he wanted to replace her pacemaker it had been 5-6 years but it wouldnt be for awhile, wait to replace it because he didnt want to cut her back open with her weight only being 80lbs....now when she had the heart attack and went to the hospital the doctor replaced the pacemaker....
Avatar m tn m doing okay except I am having some pretty severe muscle spasms in the area surrounding my pacemaker. Has anybody else experienced anything like this? I can't sleep or relax because all of a sudden out of nowhere BAM a muscle spasm. And they certainly get your attention in the chest area. I have been to my cardiologist several times and he assures me it it not the pacemaker malfuntioning and that sometimes it takes a while for spasms to stop. But here's the deal.
Avatar n tn Normally, the electrical activity spreads from one heart cell to the next in an orderly and coordinated way to allow the heart to pump blood. During each normal heartbeat, the muscle cells in the upper chambers of the heart, the atria (AY-tree-uh), contract. The contraction pumps blood from the atria to the ventricles. Then the muscle cells in the ventricles contract, pumping blood from the ventricles to the lungs and the rest of the body.
280299 tn?1216855676 s are caused by non pacemaker cells that take on the roll of the pacer cells and send out errant electrical signals causing these arrhythmias. Unfortunately, SVT is usually unifocal (one particular section of the heart muscle is the section trying to take over the job of the natural pacemaker) and PVC's are often multifocal (lots of different little rogue cells causing trouble).
976897 tn?1379167602 I read today that skin cells have been turned into myocardial cells. This means obviously, no rejection problems. The success has been shown in rats and is a few years from human use, but it does look promising. This is obviously a brilliant treatment for heart failure, but in all cases? If heart failure is caused by ischemia, and I think ultimately a high proportion are, then how will this help?
Avatar n tn By the way...I noticed the ??? near the "natural pacemaker" portion of your post. Thought I'd take a minute to help you understand. The sinus atrial node is a clump of cells in your heart that put out an electrical current that causes the rest of your cells in the atrial center of your heart to contract. The electrical current continues into the ventricular node and causes the bottom of the heart to contract immediately after that.
Avatar n tn t able to follow the normal path of specialised cells, so some of the ventricle gets its signal across the heart muscle causing a slight delay. Yes he can stick to his normal routines and play sport. The other recommendations by the Doctor are really for general health and to avoid future coronary disease, a different thing altogether.
Avatar m tn Mom is 90 yrs old and has severe dementia. She is need of a new pacemaker battery. Cardiologist said they don't change batteries - the whole pacemaker is changed. She is using her pacemaker 95% of the day. Is is a good idea to change this? Can you still die with a pacemaker? I know if she could make the decision herself she would tell me to not change it and leave well enough alone. I don't know what to do.
Avatar m tn Yes, the condition can infect the heart's natural pacemaker. The heart's "natural" pacemaker is called the sinoatrial (SA) node or sinus node. It's a small mass of specialized cells in the top of the heart's right atrium (upper chamber). It makes the electrical impulses that cause your heart to beat.
