Oxycontin for nerve pain

Common Questions and Answers about Oxycontin for nerve pain

oxycontin

647120 tn?1256601651 When I started seeing a pain manager for chronic leg pain last fall, she said it was nerve pain without doing any diagnostics. She put me on morphine, and I've had ups and downs with it. Now I am considering going back to square one by weening off of morphine and seeing what my pain level is. It is almost a year since I had L4-5 spinal fusion, and I hate the side effects, costs, and stigma that go with taking this class of drugs. Has anyone tried this? What was your experience?
531667 tn?1215612330 the members there have everyday experience with the symptoms and also the treatments that do work best. Do you take anything for pain now? I have found that the oxycontin does the best for pain control because it is extended release and also has few side effects. The worst med you can take is Methadone it causes severe drowsiness at least it did with me and I have heard several others say it does also.
Avatar f tn I hope the injections do work for you, in the mean time because your problem is a nerve one as well as localised pain ask your Dr about gabapentin which can help with nerve pain (still need other pain killers but they, like tramadol can be taken alongside the gabapentin. Take care.
Avatar n tn It depends on what your pain is from. I have RSD and nerve pain, along with severe joint pain. My meds have always helped the deep joint pain but nothing much has helped my joint pain, and I have tried almost everything there is. Talk with your doctor about maybe trying a different long-acting med. We're all different and what works for one, may not work for another. There are several long-acting meds that you could try and see if they work better than the OxyContin.
Avatar f tn Neurontin is an excellent medication for nerve pain. Oxycotin will not work on nerve pain. When are you going to the spine clinic?
874521 tn?1424116797 t understand how a PAIN relieving procedure would eliminate the need for replacement....the nerve blk is only for pain NOT repair, I think some of these doc's just want to scare us into going ahead with THEIR plans and not always with our best interests in mind.
Avatar f tn an opiate is not the main medication for treatment. Most patients are on a nerve pain medication like Lyrica, Neurontin, or Cymbalta. These target specific nerve pain which is your main source of pain with the herniated discs and sciatic nerve pain. An opiate does not work well for this. Same thing with having a muscle relaxer to take as needed. Flexeril, Skelaxin, Robaxin, Baclofen, or Zanaflex. This is very useful for those times with bad muscle spasms... Again...
Avatar m tn The surgery required plastic surgery which resulted in nerve pain from my knee to my foot. It follows along the peroneal nerve. I am on gabapentin, Hydromorph Contin and Methadone to control pain. I also am taking acupuncture and trying a desensitization technique by rubbing different kinds of materials along my leg. The pain can be quite severe. Do you have any other suggestions that would take away the pain?
Avatar n tn I know someone who has been on OxyContin for about 9 years for Fibromyalgia pain. This person gets about 90 OxyContin a month. I personally think that is outrageous. I really wish the FDA would get rid of this drug completely.
1029507 tn?1287714315 i just talked to my llmd nurse she told me when i come down we will talk about morphine for my pain, right now i take Oxycontin for pain she said that is just a short term help, she said that morphine works for chronic pain.
725248 tn?1316162245 It looks like this might be my last alternative, I have had epidurals, RF Albalations, PT, Tense units. For a while my Pain doctor had my oxycontin and norco, but took me off the oxycontin and left me on the norco even though I have told him the norco ( 8- 10/325mg a day) is not working any more. I go in next week and see a different pain doctor who works directly with the neuro surgeon next week to learn more about the pain pump, the neuro surgeon feels I am a candidate for the pump.
Avatar m tn Most of us with significant pain take Neurontin (Gabapentin) or Lyrica (Pregabalin). These do work for nerve pain, though doses have to be titered up and down when we start or stop them. Hefty doses may be needed, and sometimes they need supplementation with a small dose of an antidepressant such as Cymbalta or Amiltryptiline--someone correct me please if I don't have these drugs right. But some antidepressants do have pain-relieving properties as well.
Avatar n tn There are pudendal nerve specialist that you can google. Dr. Conway in New Hampshire can diagnose nerve pain and his colleague gives injections. There are a few across the country.
Avatar n tn I take Neurontin for severe nerve pain at disc, low back, legs and feet. Nerve pain started immediatley after sed/ta disc surgery. Have taken neurontin for 8 years. Gained 40 lbs within in 6 months of starting Neurontin. Started losing hair when began Neurontin. Fortunately I had lots of hair to start with but 8 years later, I will soon have to wear a wig because of the dramatic hair loss. Also frustrated that cannot get the 40 pounds off either.
Avatar f tn Medications like Gabapentin or Lyrica, and/or Cymbalta do a much better job of controlling nerve pain. I deal with a lot of nerve pain myself so I know first hand opioids do not do a good job at controlling nerve pain. I am on the 50 mcg/hr patch every 48 hours and I also take Gabapentin and an anti-depressant similar to Cymbalta to help control the nerve pain I have. Wishing you the best.
Avatar f tn I have neuropathic nerve pain from a botched neck spinal fusion 2013. After 2 more spinal fusions to correct the problem it was determined that the problems i am having cannot be corrected. I am left with permanent damage and neupathic nerve pain. To add to it my lower back has disc compression issues. I have been getting injections for this when its unbearable, but im apprehensive about surgical treatment.
Avatar m tn I would tell you it is a large amount...because.... I had the same surgery at L5/S1 9 years ago - had a second surgery on the same disc (yes, re-herniated) 3 years ago - Now doctors are telling me fusion (L5/S1 herniated 3rd time and is unstable!) and they told me I also need a multi-level cervical fusion (2 large herniations) I also now have Adhesive Arachnoditis, my S1 nerve is encased in scar tissue, and a slew of other problems in my lumbar spine. I take 7.5 Hydrocodone daily.
529142 tn?1214352259 After a 10 day stay I was dignoised with herniated discs at T7 to T11 also kpysos stenosis, since then this sometimes causes burning pain down and across middle of back when I put a bra on it seems to be pressing on a nerve then I get the pain accross my left ribs.
Avatar n tn They often like to see how many you have taken. He may just require something for break through pain if the OxyContin is not holding him or a higher dosage. He is young and should heal quickly but until than hopefully than can make him more comfortable. Sometimes when the pain is acute form a new injury nothing will ease it very much. This was true when I had a MVA. It may require time but certainly a call or ER visit can't hurt. Best of luck to your bf and you.
Avatar f tn Arent they the same thing? Why would I be having withdrawels? I take the meds for real pain, and ran out of the percocet, because I try not to take as much oxycontin, becuase it makes me tired and gives me a headache. Any ideas?
Avatar f tn m wondering if 1 oxycontin (80mg) that my BF gives me every day to assist in my wean will help me. I am having minimal WD signs but the physical pain for which I was initially prescribed 3 Dils (8mgs each) per day by the former doc comes roaring back every morning. I am no longer on the Dilaudids.
Avatar f tn Hi Christie, Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I am glad that you found us but sorry to hear about your mothers chronic back pain. You did not indicate if your Mom is elderly and you are caring for her or if she is independant and not a senior citizen. Also who is this nurse? Is she a friend of yours or is she routinely involved in your mother's care? In other words does he know your mother well?
Avatar n tn Of course there are multiple other opiates available for pain. What for me may not be true for you. I hesitate to suggestion a specific opiate as this should be between you and your physician. Often if you request a one over an other it can raise reg flags. You're much better off to tell your PCP that what the current medications are simply not controlling your pain. Explain how the pain effects your daily life in detail, ask for his help and suggestions.
725248 tn?1316162245 I would like to just add that I was taking Hydrocodone also for breakthrough pain while on Oxycontin early on and found that I felt a fogginess upon waking from sleep that lasted all day and was switched to Percocet for breakthrough pain as you were on before. You may not have this happen to you because we are all different but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Avatar f tn If you have a inflamed or pinched nerve you might need a different drug. I had nerve pain after my debulking surgery. No opiate painkiller touched it. I was put on a different drug that was specific for nerve based pain (can't remember what it was though) and after being in pain for days with no relief, in only a few hours after taking the 1st dose of the new drug the pain started easing and was almost completely gone after another dose.
Avatar m tn I was told this was a better forum for this post. I have chronic low back and left leg pain for which I've been taking oxycontin for about 10 years. Right now I'm taking about 300mg OxyContin a day and about 30mg of hydrocodone for break through pain. It's getting to the point that it's not working and a lot of the day I'm feeling like I'm in withdrawal. Quite frankly I'm sick and tired of taking the stuff. I feel like I'm a slave to it.
Avatar f tn 1 mg. clonidine for nerve pain, 60 mg. 2 x day Cymbalta for nerve pain, 10 mg Ambien at night as needed, 30 mg. oxycontin 3 x day for pain, 15 mg. 4 x a day as needed for pain. This group of meds started on 5/25. All along I've been very concerned about upping dosages and I never wanted any long-acting meds. After many visits and discussions and a lot of research on my part, I finally agreed to the oxycontin. Before that I was taking about 45 mg. of oxycodone every 4 hours as needed.
