Common Questions and Answers about Oxycontin and the brain

oxycontin

Avatar m tn Hi everyone, i am so done with being handcuffed to my Rx's and being handcuffed because of because of being on my meds.. I suffered a instant brain anuerism some years ago. Was life flighted to Stanford, had emergency brain surgery and survived, which I later was told is a miracle, since most people bleed out in 4 mins. Unfortuntley the outcome was nerve damage which left me in extreme pain. Needless to say I was referred to a pain mgmt. Doc.
Avatar f tn I went down 5 mg yesterday, and woke up and spent the morning with the heebeegeebees, a/k/a withdrawals. I bought the book yesterday, I’m not done reading it, but I wanted to share that for me it is very informative..... He seems to have done his homework as far as understanding addiction..... and offers methods, drugs, and alternatives for help getting off not only opiates.....but all the other drugs I see people struggling with on this site.
Avatar f tn I take the meds for real pain, and ran out of the percocet, because I try not to take as much oxycontin, becuase it makes me tired and gives me a headache. Any ideas?
Avatar f tn Also, oxy is more soluble and I believe it is a first pass metabolite, meaning it crosses the blood brain barrier after one pass thru the liver, where hydro is metabolized twice by the liver before becoming active. Oxy is much more powerfull than hydro per milligram and has a meaner withdrawel too.
5312547 tn?1367094865 t as strong and also has acetominophen in it so make sure not to take Tylenol in any other form. Oxycodone and OxyContin are essentially the same drug and have no Tylenol in them. OxyContin is a time relealse and is usually taken twice a day. Usuallymanother med is given for breakthrough pain. All of these drugs will case physical dependence and in some people can lead to addiction.
Avatar f tn I was able to handle my pain pretty well until the past year...I have been upped to 40mg of OxyContin 3x a day and 8mg of dilaudid 5x a day...I'm wanting to get back to work and won't be able to do so if I don't at least cut down or close to off of them because my brain is working slower than ever because of the medicine..I tried saboxone after the 2nd surgery and coming off of that was a nightmare..worse than coming off of heroin....
Avatar f tn Does the blue pill of oxycontin cause physical abuse by the one who is taking the pill?
Avatar m tn Pure heroin is not even real toxic to the body or brain, it is the impurities, not the opiates that cause damage, mostly. Unless there is some pre-existing condition that the opiates triggered, there really is no scientific reason you would have done permanent damage with pharmaceutical grade opiates. Just my opinion, of coarse.
1140035 tn?1276352098 t seem to care much about me so i am writing down the amounts im taking and not taking any in between its the only way ,these drugs seem to build up fluid in the brain and put pressure in places not normally found with someone who doesn't take pain killers so take less and less at the same time every day until your body doesn't need it anymore ,Im down to two a day 20mgs and know i will kick it but it takes determination you must take them at the same time everyday then spread the time o
Avatar n tn im srry but this sounds like a brain issue..this man needs medical treatment asap..call the doc and tell hm he might say take him to local e.r......ive withdraw from high doses of methadone shook but not the way ur describing it,,,, if its a shake...not to bad IF ITS A JERKY SHAKE BACK AND FOURTH GET HELP...THESE WITHDRAWALS CAN LAST UP TO YEARS THEY SAY THEY DONT BUT IN THE BRAIN IS A TOTAL DIFF STORY...
Avatar m tn Pain management is complicated and knowing the reason why your father is taking the meds he is prescribed as well as the long-term goals and effects seems like something you have a right to ask about. Avatar f tn oh holly, becareful of the tramadol...many here have been addicted to it and the w/ds are said to be worse than oxy....just wanted to make you aware of the. i went c/t off oxy, i was a snorter....i agree that clonidine will help ya...i didnt have it but nmany here say it makes a huge difference. reality is that the physical w/ds are over in a bout a week. you can endure for a week to get your life back...after the first week its mostly lack of energy and sleep...at least it was for me.
711290 tn?1231258904 I strongly feel you have to get your brain wrapped around the idea that you are going to quit and can do it. Doing something like the Thomas recipe will also help not only from the stuff your taking, but the fact that you have a "routine", of taking a pill, but it be a vitamin instead. Be strong!!!
Avatar m tn Not sure if you are talking about oxycontin or oxycodone pills in various mixes and forms. Either way, oxycontin and percoccet have the narcotic oxycodone in it. Oxycontin is pure oxycodone in a time release form while percoccet is a mix of oxycodone and another OTC pain reliever. Oxycodone is a stronger narcotic then the narcotic in vicodin which is hydrocodone. Both will cause WD. The WD from oxycodone was always much worse for me then hydrocodone but some say it's the same.
Avatar f tn I am not on any medication, but seem to remember that this is a common reaction to pain meds that they wear out after awhile, or that the brain gets used to them and then needs more to get the original result you got when you first started using them... Your doctor should be the one to advise you about increasing the dosage.
Avatar m tn Drew has a book that tells about the physiology of the brain recovering after opiate use.I think the first thing you can expect is more money in your pocket though. The next thing will be alot less anxiety.
Avatar f tn He had given me a series of epidurals and the last one, inflamed a bulging disk and I went to the ER in severe pain. Have not been to an ER in over five years. Anyway, I had just filled all my meds and had plenty. He claimed I went to the ER for meds and sent me a dismissal letter. Unbelieveable. He also gave me 10 days of oxy 5mg and three fent patches of 25mcg. I guess he thought this would get me off the meds.
Avatar f tn I have been prescribed many different opiates over the years for chronic pain and illness. Oxycontin, though not the strongest, wreaked the most havoc on my body and brain. In fact, both times my doctor switched me to it I went cold turkey off of large doses of it because I knew I was in trouble. It made me high and changed my personality. The number one thing was stomach pain, it really really hurts I know. Try drinking warm fluids and not cold.
Avatar n tn t work for the Oxycontin so I am combining a 20mg Oxycontin tablet with the short acting Oxycodone. The only withdrawal symptom I have noticed so far is that I am a bit tired. Nothing more. To date, I am down to 22.5mg 4 times a day. I was horrifed by the number of people who feel impending doom or experience unbearable withdrawal while weaning themselves or otherwise quitting this drug.
Avatar f tn I feel practically brain damaged and I used to be someone who read and wrote all the time and was quick minded and creative. now I felt he wheels just barely turn in my brain and I've read some studies that made me scared that my brain might not ever come back to its old self. Anyway are there others here who are off or have gone off opiate pain meds and if so what was your experience? Did you get back to your old self?
398302 tn?1202271127 dont know how accurate this is but does oxy kill the dophamine in the brain and may take a couple of months to correct. That could account for some of your feelings. This is what was said to me on this forum days ago. Could be wrong. Iam on day 6 and I feel good then tired then pissed off. But I do now iam happy and going to b the man I once was. And so will u. This life is not a dress rehearsal.
Avatar m tn I am 6 days clean of a serious opiate addiction, not a minute goes by that I dont think about it in some form, but I use it in a positive light each craving on this day, my brain says he remember what that stuff feels like you liked it just go get one we can be friends again and i;ll cut the toliet sheets out and the ahceyness.
539841 tn?1235394722 I mean, lets face it-they picked oxycontin because it is easier on my kidneys than pain meds such as vicodin and percdan and other weaker meds that have tylenol in them- so the way they (oxycontin) kill pain is to shoot endorphins in the pleasure centers of my brain, I.E. getting high...is this wrong? Well, I am taking it this way. As I type this I just crunched one down. I dont become beligerent. I still try to be a father to my son-and it usually enables me to do so. I dont know...
460825 tn?1206476403 I have tried to cold turkey it several and i mean several times in the past few years, and now i have a 2 year old daughter and a fiance' (which i can say is totally agenst the abuse of medications, pot, alcohol ect...) but what she doesn't understand is why i relaps so much when tryin' to get off these drugs. I feel so alone, and that no one understands me. all my friends use drugs so i have now made it a point to stop my association with many of them in hopes to better myself.
Avatar f tn If I get up and get going and using my brain and/or body for something constructive, I am ok. If I get up and try to sit around and watch a tv show or something, then within minutes, I am totally screwed. This is a bad drug, and the effects of it are devastating and long lasting. I have not a any days in the last 430 that I did not have to deal with the effects. It is a daily battle and if you do not treat it that way, it will eventually beat you down..
Avatar m tn I know this is hard to hear and deal with and its easier said than done, but go through the 4 days of withdrawal from the opiates and get it over with. Do not try to get on something that will help the withdrawal symptoms because it will just make you dependent on something else. I wish I had just gone through the few days of withdrawal and not gone to suboxone so I would not be sick. I have been through the physical withdrawals many times, so if you need any advice let me know.
918457 tn?1244645682 re addicted to oxys, and to vicodin and percs etc. As far as your brain is concerned, they are the same.....opiates. The only real difference, to your brain is the amount/mgs/strength. They are all interchangeable. So by using one opiate to relieve the w/d's of another, you may as well consider yourself tapering, and will be pro-longing your withdrawals. So be careful, or you'll be wondering why your withdrawals are lasting so long. Good luck and hang in there.
