Oxycontin and liver problems

Common Questions and Answers about Oxycontin and liver problems

oxycontin

Avatar m tn I had back surgery a few years ago and the dr prescribed oxycodone for pain since I had liver disease rather then oxycontin which I believe had tylenol. As Trinity said this stuff is seriously addictive and tolerance increases very rapidly. I threw hundreds of them out after a month of taking them when the acute pain subsided reasonably well.
Avatar m tn At the clinic, they warned me that isoniazid is processed mainly by the liver and that drinking alcohol could cause liver damage in combination and should be avoided. I have no problem not drinking, but I take norco on a regular basis for chronic pain and I'm concerned that the acetaminophen in the norco's will combine with the isoniazid and cause severe liver damage. Thus, as of yet I havent begun taking the antibiotics.
Avatar m tn I was on oxycontin for 10 yrs and never had an abnormal liver test, stomach issues etc. Hope that helps.
Avatar n tn Quite a risk of addiction, if you ask me, especially considering the long acting release and the potential for abuse Someone said that OTC drugs were safer for the liver. Tylenol can be obtained OTC and is deadly to the liver if taken in too large a dose. The NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, etc.) are bad for the kidneys and also the liver if you have hepc.
Avatar m tn They prescribe Lortab, Norco, Perocoet, Oxycodone, and Oxycontin and MANY others. It just depends on the patient and the patients needs and history. You really should get with your Dr. and talk about your concerns with him/her and decide together what will be the best for you. I hope that you will let us know and keep us updated as to what evolves with your meds. Once again I want to welcome you and hope you will be an active member on here. Good Luck....
Avatar m tn I am prescribed OxyContin short release and as well as OxyContin time release daily but the OxyContin is not covered by my insurance and is quit expensive. Is there another time release pain medication I could take that would be as safe for the liver as the OxyContin??
Avatar m tn Yes the oxys r both the same thing so don't get why he's on two kinds and doses and yes they can affect his kidneys and liver over time. But long use like alcohol.
Avatar n tn i think my body is used to the oxycontin and when i have a flareup, only ibuprophen seems to help, not more oxycontin or oxyfast. I used to use oxyfast when i had a flareup but i don't get them like that anymore. ergo, either i am in fact over the worst of the fibromyalgia and can get by with ibuprofen or i am on the right maintenance dose and will simply have to live with the oxycontin daily as i have been for 8 years. no way to know until i go for it.
584338 tn?1226971604 My husband has severe back problems and as a result has been on a very high dose of oxycontin for 2 1/2 years (640mg a day). Under advice by the GP and pain clinic he is now currently tapering down from this dose, due to the high addiction of this drug and that they believe it is no longer helping the back pain. Anyway, to get to the problem.
Avatar f tn Hi. Yes, stay AWAY from tylenol (acetominophen). Back pain is hard to diagnose without extended ted testing --- pm me with details and i have an army od docs (family and friends) who wil answer me. Everyone out there -- I HAVE found NO USE FOR TYLENOL. I'd go with ibuprofen, but if there is ANY question about liver problems (see your doctors and...) see if u can use Alleve. It isn't metobolisem through the liver.
Avatar f tn She has been ordered to go cold turky on the oxycontin because there is signs of liver and kidney damage. They wont operate on her for her pain till she loses a bit of weight. She is doing her best to lose weight but it is hard as she can not move much. Could someone please tell me what the actual with drawal affects are of going straight off Oxycontin and how long does it take to get out of your system.
Avatar n tn It is not extended release like the Oxycontin and I like it much better and do not have to worry about toxic Tylenol in the liver. I would ask at your next appointment, they make the immediate release oxycodone in 5mg, 10mg, 15mg, & 30mg. The Oxycontin is very expensive and most insurance companies require prior authorization and just won't pay for it... b/c there is not a generic for it. The oxycodone immediate release tablets are fairly inexpensive compared to the Oxycontin.
Avatar n tn so I just researched the oxy, the vicodin, and all the rest...as they relate to the liver AND fibrosis and/or HCV....and the more I read......the more scared I got. SO, so far, the literature is suggesting more increase in fibrotic activity, I'd be reluctant to say any pain medication is "liver friendly" at this point. Even though everyone keeps parading that same tired standard "two grams a day of tylenol is safe for liver patients"....
Avatar m tn If I could go back in time I would have never continued using oxy. I did and I got hooked and like you, suffered from chronic constipation and that was just the tip of the iceberg. Before long I ended up with bloody poop (sorry tmi), a nagging pain in my side (liver maybe?) and ended up spending a sickening amount of money on pills when I ran out early which always happened. You are on the edge of a cliff right now. Keeping on going with the pills will ruin your life.
1655418 tn?1302053991 I had multiple foot surgeries requiring Oxycontin and by the time I had tapered off that altogether I had discovered N+ the 'poor man's cousin' for Oxycontin. It began with 6 N+s to do the trick; now I'm up to between 30 and 70 N+s a day. It is wreaking havoc with my excema which requires me to take a strong Panadol (Australian brand for paracetamol) to just get under the shower. Have gone 2 days without N+ but it's getting more and more difficult to give up altogether.
Avatar f tn He has had hepatitis c since 1989. He began having slight liver problems years ago, because of alcoholism, however he has avoided/feared following up with his doctor for about 2 years. Now, he is in a detox center because his addiction to oxycontin is so severe.(which was prescribed after injury last December.... may I note he has been addicted to hydrocodone for atleast 15 years before this)......
Avatar f tn After failed neck fusion, I was prescribed slow release Oxycontin. 6 yrs later after lots of hassles, I finally found out that Oxycontin is absorbed in the large intestine. In desperation for pain relief ( with my Dr's approval) I started chewing them. I currently take 6 x 20mg tabs per day. 1 every 4 hrs. They just changed the formula & now they change to s gluggy gel when they get wet. This hsd been causing me some problems, so my GP prescribed me Targin.
Avatar m tn Medically I have been cleared for kidneys, liver and the cardiac cath came back ok. The swelling stays in my feet and legs pretty much all the time and then it will involve my thighs. I try to control it with salt and water restrictions and diuretics but it doesn't seem to work. I can no longer wear any of my shoes and I can't always get pants over my legs is they are straight legged. Please tell me if anyone else has experienced this problem with swelling.
Avatar n tn thanks for your info. I to have had weight gain with both Lyrica and Oxycontin but I can't use the second Oxycontin qd because it causes severe constipation. so I only take the 2nd Oxy when my pain it really bad. Lyrica seems to work wonders for the intestinal nerve damage but I had a freind who was over weight and had breathing problems and her Dr. gave her a RX for Lyrica and I told her to ask him for something else because I was concerned it would put her into heart failure.
Avatar f tn I am a 27 year old mother, who has been addicted to Percocet and Oxycontin for the past two years. I have taken large amounts of both pills, and when I say large I mean very large amounts. I started out taking only one percocet in the evening to relax. I do have medical problems, but nothing to severe to be taking anything. I started getting both the pills from my mothers friend, and soon I started getting them from my own Doctor by making problems up.
Avatar n tn t think it odd that they are horribly constipated, tired or have digestive problems.. Opiate use and liver problems share some similar symptoms.. Ostrich.. its not real common to meet a senior citizen who has been taking pills for 30 years, or shooting heroin.. Sure, there are probably a few, but how many are already dead? Addicts don't all die of overdose.. Liver failure, Heart attack, Stroke.. we are wide open as we age..
Avatar n tn ) So in the AM the next day, i felt very bad, shakes, etc etc, and i took just 1 40mg oxycontin, and it made me feel better! I was good all day, and the next day, I felt bad when I woke up again, so I took 1 40mg oxycontin! I am on my 3rd day, and the same thing happened! So I never took the suboxone. I am wondering if I can ween myself off of the oxycontin? Since I am taking 1 40mg pill per day, I think I may cut it in half and try a 20mg tomorrow morning.
4152590 tn?1350772856 One other problem I have had is gas and diarrhea... And I mean BAD! I also have lots of memory problems... Good luck to you and I pray Alls well!
