Common Questions and Answers about Oxcarbazepine hyponatremia

trileptal

1108262 tn?1273179266 The Trileptal also began causing a lowering of my blood sodium levels (hyponatremia), a rare side effect for the medication, but I used salt pills to offset this and had to- guess what?- go for regular blood tests. And then depression and anxiety worsened over time. I also began to have these weird twitches and movements I couldn't control, one so badly I ended up in an emergency room with a neurologist questioning if the Trileptal was causing the problem.
Avatar f tn "We also asked if he had any other patients showing similar symptoms after taking Gleevec but got no response. " Well, from the cited article "Electrolyte Disorders Induced by Antineoplastic Drugs", we have: "In cancer patients, hyponatremia has an overall prevalence up to 47% with mild, moderate and severe degrees accounting for 36, 10, and 1%" So while severe is rare, overall is not at all rare.
502219 tn?1311357910 I read a article recently referring to the fact that Patients with hyponatremia had a higher mortality rate and that UNOS was considering adding sodium levels to the MELD calculation. I also found a MELD calculator that includes sodium at the mayo clinic site http://www.mayoclinic.org/meld/mayomodel8.html My sodium level averages from 128 to 130 and the MELD-NA Calculator gives me a much higher MELD of 20. Are they thinking of changing the MELD calculation?
Avatar f tn I just started taking oxcarbazepine 9 days ago and I built up to 300 mg,no high not even close. Not like with other drugs like oxycontin, were with in 30 min you get a buzz.I guess you have to take higher doses if thats were you want to go,but I dont know.
Avatar f tn With all 3 of those meds, and especially Oxcarbazepine, you can find discussions online about amenorrhea, which means your periods stop. You might want to discuss this with your doctor, as websites suggest, if you're taking these medications and your menstrual period changes. Best wishes.

Avatar f tn Hyponatremia is a common electrolyte disorder defined as a serum sodium level of less than 135 mEq per L. Treatment is based on symptoms and underlying causes. In general, hyponatremia is treated with fluid restriction (in the setting of euvolemia), isotonic saline (in hypovolemia), and diuresis (in hypervolemia). For more information, see Figure 1 and Table 1 in the following article: https://www.aafp.org/afp/2015/0301/p299.
222267 tn?1253302210 I just started OXCARBAZEPINE. I am really sick. I am on 600mg at night. I woke up this morning with a headache and I have felt like I have the flu all day. I cannot eat or drink anything. I'm exausted. Does anyone have experience with this med? How long will these symptoms last? I have to somehow work tomorrow. I am getting so tired of being sick and tired. I'm not depressed. I'm just coming back from hell. I had major surgery. It made me have a severe manic episode.
Avatar m tn I am taking tablets for my minor neural problem for the past 4 years, The tablets i am consuming are Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal) -300mg and Levetiracetam (keppra) -250mg. Now I am looking for a tablet which should have both of this content in the same. I feel guilty that I am taking more tablets and my health condition is improved now. so I planned to reduce my tablet dosage. so I look over this- i.e.
Avatar f tn My doctor switched me to oxcarbazepine and that stopped the issue. The one extra oxygen molecule somehow helped the situation. Ask your doctor to make the adjustment and see if that helps.
Avatar f tn If you have hyponatremia maybe. Did they do a blood test? How long did they say to eat more then average sodium?
Avatar f tn I’m on levetiracetam aka keppra and clobazam aka onfi. When I was on oxcarbazepine (trileptal) and levetiracetam (keppra) I started having these weird headaches where I would lose my vision, hearing, smell, and coordination, but I could still speak and feel. The doctors are pretty much stumped. Has anyone ever had a situation like this?
Avatar m tn Within the last two months, I have been experiencing burning and pain in my right foot (including toes). I am taking oxcarbazepine, is this a side affect or does it mean I need to increase the dose.
Avatar f tn During those times I had not yet been diagnosed and was able to go back to life like normal, however after the diagnosis and being on phenytoin and switching to oxcarbazepine i am feeling awful. Dizzy, nauseated, moody, extremely tired, severe headaches that come and go. All i get from my Neurologist is these are side effects that will eventually go away. Because i never know when these symptoms will come on too strong I have missed a lot of days at work during my probation period.

Avatar m tn Topamax, Oxcarbazepine (carbamazepine Tegretol) 1200 mg twice a day, And I have some nerve medications but when I am taking my Topamax and Oxcarbazepine I seem not to need them quite as much. If someone could point me in the right direction... or tell me what plants contain Lithium carbonate I would appreciate that. Thank you.
Avatar n tn What would be a rough formula for calculating sodium excretion. This has to handle extreme results like acute hyponatremia and hypernatremia. What is the maximum excretion at which point the body is unable to keep up with consumption? This information will not be used for any actual medical purpose on any actual organism, inaccuracy is acceptable and even intended to keep the calculations simple.
Avatar m tn Have been taking Carbamezapine and lately Gabapentine, which both cause Erectile Disfunction. Have read that Oxcarbazepine does not have this side effect. Have not convinced my neurologist to let me switch meds. What success have people had using Oxcarbazepine for TN, and does it also cause ED? I don't want to use either carbamezapine or gabapentine if possible.
Avatar m tn Hi, Drinking too much water can lead to a condition known as water intoxication and to hyponatremia. This is most commonly seen in infants under six months of age and sometimes in athletes. This also results when a dehydrated person drinks too much water without the accompanying electrolytes. Excess water outside the cells draws sodium from within the cells out to re-establish the necessary concentration. As more water accumulates, the serum sodium concentration drops , hence, hyponatremia.
Avatar m tn On August 23rd, 2014, he was diagnosed with Tonsillitis, Hypertension, Hyponatremia, Hypokalemia and Hypoxemia by one hospital.
Avatar f tn Check for hyponatremia, it sounds like potential symptoms of hypoadrenalism. Do you crave sodium at all?
Avatar n tn Then she got ill and stopped when she was admitted to the hospital for low sodium/high potassium levels and was given an IV, I believe at that time they said it was hyponatremia. She is currently taking gabapentin with no real affect. Her condition has not improved but has gotten various diagnosis from Fribromyalia to Issacs Syndrome. Can you shed some light on this? Thanks!
Avatar m tn carbamazepine, clobazam, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine and topiramate. These medications rarely stop the seizures completely but reduce the frequency and severity of them. I hope this helps, my prayers are with you and your son.
Avatar n tn Other people have listed Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine), Neurontin (Gabepentin), Elavil (Amitriptyline) and Lyrica (Pregabalin) as some alternatives. I am currently on Lyrica + Cymbalta. I can't say that it's working but still playing with dosages. Anyone reading, please feel free to add your own choices and/or experiences.
