Over the counter niacin vs niaspan

Common Questions and Answers about Over the counter niacin vs niaspan

niaspan

Avatar n tn I CAN NO LONGER AFFORD NIASPAN, CAN I TAKE NIACIN OVER THE COUNTER OR VITAMIN B3 WILL IT HELP THE SAME I WAS TAKING 500MG AT BEDTIME
Avatar m tn I cannot find any literature on the matter. Niaspan will certainly address the low HDL. However, can you clarify whether (1) Niaspan would treat fatty liver and (2) is Niaspan's use contradicted with those diagnosed with fatty liver disease?
Avatar n tn If you have stage 4 liver disease (cirrhosis) you should consult with your hepatologist regarding any changes to diet and and any over-the-counter drugs, vitamins or herbs before taking them. Many can be toxic to a cirrhotic liver an increase liver damage and in some individuals cause decompensation and liver failure depending on a patient's liver disease and the amount of the toxin.
Avatar m tn I am going to do exactly what I did the last time 2 years ago-sans the impastation-take fish oil omega 3 over the counter-the Dr. said that was ok as long as it did not exceed 4 grams per day-similar to Lovazo-walk and walk and walk, which I did the last time and my lipid results improved dramatically going from about 220 total cholesterol to 167 and my triglycerides dropping from a whopping over 700 to 180 and my HDL going from 27 to 34-some improvement anyway-all in 6 weeks.
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Avatar m tn Starting in July 2007 I followed this suggestion, taking 1,500mg slow-release niacin with the Lipitor. I have biannual blood tests. The past three tests, 7-07, 12-07, and 6-08 showed my cholesterol to be 149, 85, and 57mg. LDL 65, 26, and 16mg. Triglycerides 183, 29, and 36mg. HDL 47, 53, and 34mg. These were dramatic improvements, except for the HDL. I am advised the 'good' cholesterol range is 50-200mg. If mine goes below 50mg in the next test do I have a problem?
Avatar n tn No it doesn't mean you have heart disease , the only way to deternine that is to get a angiogram or CT scan of your heart. A low fat/low cholesterol diet will lower your HDL but will also lower your LDL big time..its the ratio of HDL to LDL that's most important. My LDL before I started the niaspan and diet was over 100 and my total was 185 or so. In 6 weeks I have went down to the numbers you see in my first post. My trigs were at 144 and are now in the low 80's.
Avatar n tn I am Ricky7023. I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. Either the system or I screwed up. I couldn't get back in under Ricky7023 (forgot the password, couldn't get the system to send me another). The drug in question is Niaspan and the person saying the study couldn't have shown a link between the drug and cancer was a cariologist who wanted to proscribe the niaspan. I don't know that any of that matters, of course.
Avatar n tn CRP does not always indicate your arteries are inflamed , the inflammation could be from one of a number of sources. I'm on Niaspan because its one of the few treatments that can raise HDL while lowering LDL and increasing LDL particle size. If you are worried about CRP, the statins are really good at lowering this number, independently of what they do to your chol. numbers.
Avatar n tn 3) Response to over-the-counter supplements vary from person to person, so the effect of niacin vs. fish oil on your triglyceride level is unknown. 4) There is some evidence that coenzyme Q10 may help with statin-induced muscle pain, but there is not any well-documented studies to support its use.
Avatar n tn p.s. Here's an abstract on the paper, search on some of the info in the abstract and you will find it. November 3, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), Dr Justin MS Lee (University of Oxford, UK) and colleagues report that 2 g of modified-release nicotinic acid (Niaspan, Abbott Laboratories) daily, on top of statins, resulted in a 1.64 mm2 reduction in carotid wall area on MRI, compared with placebo, in patients with vascular disease and low HDL.
7052683 tn?1392938795 I mean it is hard to eat out and not go off the diet. Regarding the Niaspan, the most recent study said that although the lab work looked ok the real difference in actually decline in heart attacks and so forth clinically didn't change. The lab work for the Triglycerides did make a difference though. Also, if you did go on this diet I noticed our LDL went down but our HDL also went down. The Family practice doc didn't understand why.
Avatar n tn Lipitor can increase HDL by approx 15% which would help. I would think twice about Niaspan as the most recent data suggests that the HDL that is artificially created by Niacin is not as effective against LDL as naturally occurring HDL. If you're healthy, you can increase HDL with exercise, just speak to your doctor first. Lipitor is a very safe and effective drug. In addition to the cholesterol lower properties, statins are also being proven to lower inflammation which is huge.
Avatar n tn I am concerned that the Sectral has been toxic to my liver and want to stop the medication now. I will be having labs repeated on 2/13, and will see the gastroenterologist again on 1/21. What are your thoughts; would you stop a new med if labs after intiation of that drug became elevated. Thanks for your time and attention to my concern.
Avatar f tn And my last heart doctor put me on Niacin, and it had NO effect, so he told me to double the amount of Niacin I was taking, and it still had ZERO effect. I'd be interested in seeing where someone would come up with a 20% increase figure, cause it simple is NOT proven. And Niacin can be very dangerous if to much is taken. If people recommend something, they should tell us their person experiences with what they are recommending and how it effected their HDL.
Avatar m tn Hello, I have a question about Natural Cholesterol over the counter options vs Statins. http/www.cholesterolinstitute.net/Reviews.html A few of these seem to offer good for the body items that help with cholesterol.  Particularly, this one seems to have the best ratings from that page:  HeartSavior If you read the customer reviews on Amazon, it seems to lower numbers quite a bit.
Avatar f tn The Vet offered a perscription, but I would like to try something over the counter first. Can I give him aspirin or would it hurt me? Any advise would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn Timed-release niacin is commonly prescribed to prevent arterioschlerosis. It acts as a mild vasodilator, relaxing the blood vessels and improving the microcirculation. The "fast-acting" niacin causing flushing of the face and sometimes itching. There should be no problems whatsoever with discontinuing niacin "cold-turkey" , nor should there be any withdrawal symptoms.
Avatar n tn LPa is lowered by niacin and I agree with the Niaspan. I don"t know of anything else but diet, exercise and no smoking are the mainstays.
2075937 tn?1334884194 And for the over the counter kind I've heard to get the 7 day
Avatar f tn Anyone have experience with any over the counter depression medicine that works well?
Avatar m tn From what I have read, as far as niacin goes, only high-dose niacin (such as prescription Niaspan) will have an effect on HDL and you must be monitored with blood tests to make sure there is no ensuing liver damage. Good luck... I have the HDL same problem.
