There is absolutely no way to tell for certain unless and until surgery is performed and the path results come back. Having said that, cysts are very very common and 95% benign. The best course of action is to speak with your physician to see what his recommended course of action is. They may possibly suggest removal, but sometimes, they prefer to wait awhile to see if they resolve themselves.

Avatar n tn Ovarian cysts can affect hormones so can cause menstrual cycle changes but yours seem extreme for ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are common and usually resolve on their own. Do you know the size of the one(s) you have? As far as family history of cancers, does that include any Gyn cancers especially ovarian cancer? I don't think there's any correlation between Gyn cancers and other types except in the case of Lynch Syndrome which is associated with colon, endometrial and ovarian cancer.

Do take a look at the health pages (top right) for more info on the types of symptoms you can get. However, there are times that they can't be entirely sure until you have it removed. Do you know what kind of cyst you have? When are you having surgery?
Avatar n tn Over 95% of all cysts are benign so it is more than likely not cancerous. There is a lot of information on types of cysts on the health pages (top right). An endometrial cyst is one that is created by endometrial tissue migrating from your uterus to your ovary and then starts bleeding. You should discuss with your doctor whether these cysts or the endometriosis might be affecting your ability to conceive. Good luck.
Avatar n tn If you are 40-50, then perimenopause is a possible cause. But, ovarian cysts at any age can change your hormones and cause these types of symptoms. Unfortunately, no two ovarian cysts show themselves in the same way. So, it is hard to say without having tests to rule out all other causes. In general the list of symptoms you describe sound like they could be related to menopause. But, if you are under 45, then that is less likely.

Did your dr. tell you what kind of cyst you have? Have you had a TV/US? During your reproductive years it is very common to get functional ovarian cysts that can disappear after a few menstrual cycles. Could it be your doctor is doing a watchful waiting to see if they go away? How long have you had the cyst?

Surgery for cysts depends on size, type and whether you are in pain. In many cases if surgery is required it can be done laporascopically. Don't ignore the cysts. Avatar n tn What you are describing can be symptoms for many things. These can include ovarian cysts and ovarian cancer. Since it is pretty rare for women your age to have ovarian cancer and since more than 95% of all cysts are benign let's asssume you are dealing with a cyst. I had all the symptoms you are describing and had benign cysts. You should check out the health pages (top right) and look at the listing for types of cysts and symptoms.
Avatar n tn It will usually grow and cause more symptoms. But, sometimes, benign complex cysts also grow and have to be removed surgically. Generally, when it reaches 5cm or greater or shows a trend toward growing..surgery is recommended. I did have backache with my tumor. It was 6cm. I know doctor's don't usually acknowledge that small cysts can contribute to back pain. But, there are many women who have had small cysts and do have pain. I think it can contribute to it.
Avatar f tn Usually if you have an Endometrioma you have Endometriosis which can cause a lot of pain and cramping, nausea, etc these types of cysts should be removed and are also benign. Cystadenomas cysts are usually filled with mucus and liquid again 99.9% benign for all three types of cysts. The size is not to big but if it is not getting smaller they will probably do a follow up US to see how fast it is growing or if it is shrinking.

I had ovarian cancer 15 years ago and after surgery and chemo, and a "second look" surgery with multiple biopsies was considered cured.I had a complete hysterectomy and the cancer seemed to be contained in my left ovary. Last winter I found a lump in my left groin which was biopsied and diagnosed as ovarian malignancy.

You should get to your doctor and arrange for transvaginal ultrasound, abdominal ultrasound and perhaps a CT. In children and young girls ovarian cancer usually presents as an ovarian mass and typically they only report pain if the ovary twists and its blood supply is cut off. So, ovarian cancer in young people is overall uncommon, but definitely occurs. Your symptoms would be atypical.

Usually its symptoms are prolonged bleeding, heavy bleeding, or absence of menses for a couple months (all of which I experienced). thatquitegirl is right, visiting a doctor would be the best thing to do to confirm any ovarian cysts and to know why youre having those abdominal pains.
Avatar n tn if they are suspcioius looking they should be removed immediately, if they are simple or even complex they should be watched for change, and any changes need to be addressed immediately. Ovarian cysts should be removed "whole" to prevent any leakage incase there is in fact cancer cells in the cyst. At present there is no test that detects ovarian cancer.

Avatar f tn I talked today to a Gynocological Oncologyst who said these biopsies are tricky because if you open that ovary and there is cancer, it can spread if the GYN is not trained to deal with removing these types of cysts and/or ovaries. These experts suggest a second opinion because they would know how to handle the situation if it is cancer.
