Common Questions and Answers about Ovarian cysts ovarian cancer

ovarian-cysts

Avatar n tn Most ovarian cysts and masses are benign, even suspicious looking ones. If you do not have a family history or predisposition for ovarian cancer then your lifetime risk is less than 2%. And yes, the CA125 test is not accurate at diagnosing ovarian cancer. Benign (non-cancerous) conditions can cause an elevated result. A friend of mine had a CA125 level over 1000 (VERY HIGH) when she had a benign cyst. She unnecessarily lost not only her ovary but also her uterus and other ovary.
Avatar f tn 4% chance of ovarian cancer. It is lower if you are under 50. Also it is rare to have ovarian cancer in both ovaries. It happens but it is rare. I had both ovaries but I have the BRCA mutation and I had cancer in 14 places. They could see the cancer on the ultrasound. Over 98% of ovarian cysts are benign. What does your doctor say. You could have Polycystic Ovary syndrome which is not cancerous.
Avatar f tn If it were on both ovaries it would have spread more and be clear on the ultrasound that it was cancer. 98.6% of cysts are not cancer. A normal woman has a 1.4% chance of ovarian cancer in a life time. It is lower if you are younger. If you had the BRCA gene, women in your family with early ovarian cancer the chances are 20%. If your Gyn is doing a cystectomy that is great. Many take your ovaries which is not good. It is easier to take the ovary out.
Avatar f tn thank you.regards....
3100626 tn?1341387176 Could this pain be cysts. In so much pain really getting scared my mom died.
Avatar f tn Unless you have the BRCA mutation you have a 1.4 % of ovarian cancer in a life time. 98% of all ovarian cysts are benign. Most women have several benign ovarian cysts in a life time. Uterine cancer and ovarian are not related which is weird. It is good they are checking. It may all turn out to be benign endometriosis. In the old days if you were past child bearing years they would do a hysterectomy. Now they know how important ovaries are to a woman's over all health and do not take them.
Avatar f tn If you have these cysts on both ovaries, that is another indication that it is PCOS. Ovarian cancer does not typically present in both ovaries simultaneously.
Avatar n tn What is the difference between ovarian cysts and ovarian cancer. I haven't had a period for 3 months now and I have a sharp pain in my lower right side, as well as back pain, especially in the mornings. once in a while i am off balance when walking. i am bloated, and a lot of times i don't have an appetite.
Avatar n tn Although it’s not known for sure whether benign ovarian cysts or polycystic ovaries develop into ovarian cancer, the vast majority of ovarian cysts appear to be unrelated. Women who have polycystic ovaries or ovarian cancer seldom have obvious symptoms early on. However, in both disorders, symptoms are noticed as the condition progresses. Because the ovaries are affected on both disorders, the some of the symptoms can be similar.
Avatar f tn Unless you have extensive family history of breast, colon, or ovarian cancer your risk for cancer is low. 95% of cysts are benign.
Avatar n tn has anybody gotn surgery for ovarian polic cysts?
Avatar f tn If so, then you could have inherited a gene for it (BRCA1 or 2 or Lynch Syndrome) but you would need to be tested to see if you have it. The only other cancer that has a link to ovarian cancer is colon cancer in those who have the Lynch Syndrome gene mutation. If you do not have a family history of ovarian cancer, then your chances of getting it during your lifetime are extremely low (less than 2%). Hopefully, these cysts will go away and you won't need to worry any more.
Avatar f tn If you are not BRCA positive you have a1.4% of ovarian cancer. 98% of cysts even big ones are benign. I think if you have had 3 transvaginal ultrasounds the cancer would show up by now. It spreads to other organs and the omentum. They can see that on an ultrasound. If the doctor was thinking cancer they would send you to a Gyn/oncologist. I was sent the day after my ultrasound. I am BRCA positive.
Avatar n tn No, size of ovaries is not related to your risk for ovarian cancer. This site does a good job of laying out the risks: https://ocrahope.org/patients/about-ovarian-cancer/risk-factors/ Is there a particular reason you're concerned?
Avatar f tn I have researched about ovarian cysts and cancer trying to find out what are the best treatment options. Also, I had a second opinion and this doctor told me that with a laparoscopy it would be enough. At the same time, I am worried since I have no kids and if they remove everything I can't have any. So that's why I have joined this site and try to find some answers. Thanks for your help and I'll let you know what happens.
1973052 tn?1332868276 History of previous ovarian cysts Irregular menstrual cycles Increased upper body fat distribution Early menstruation (11 years or younger) Infertility Hypothyroidism or hormonal imbalance Tamoxifen (Soltamox) therapy for breast cancer
Avatar m tn Hi old_before_my_time! Thanks so much for your response. If the CA-125 test isn't accurate for diagnosing ovarian cancer, what is it for? My doctor didn't tell me if they were functional cysts or not. He just said I need another ultrasound in 4-6 weeks. Do they know what kind of cyst it is right away? Also do you know if it's common to have multiple at a time? Periods have been normal until last month when it lasted 2 weeks and continued with spotting.
Avatar f tn I think with my family history of ovarian cancer (my mom died at 78) and with the complex cysts that have blood flow my mind is automatically jumping to ovarian cancer. I am very scared. My Doctor has called in a requisition for an MRI, and I am waiting to get a call back to find out when - but was told it could take 2 weeks or a month depending.
Avatar m tn More than 98%t of ovarian cysts are none cancer. Ovarian cysts in women are very common. Most resolve themselves with out surgery. If you can take something like Ibuprofen that can help with inflammation.
621010 tn?1221508226 I go to to my GI and he tells me that I need to go to a gyn-oncologist, because I have ovarian cysts. I had a transvaginal ultrasound today, and the tech, said it looked like grapes. That scares me. I am wondering if that is a normal sounding cyst?
Avatar n tn I think possibliy you mean ovarian cysts instead of ovarian fibriods as fibriods are assoicated with the Uterus and ovarian cysts are associated with the ovaries.
Avatar n tn A ct scan is sometimes carried out if ovarian cancer is suspected and you are having symptoms . A diagnosis of ovarian cancer can only for definate be made after pathology review with samples from the tissue. Are you having symptoms ? . A bit more info if possible would be helpful thanks.
205009 tn?1218559728 As one of my thyroid tumors is now considered pre-cancerous but not cancer at this point, does the recurrence of the ovarian cysts mean it's more likely to be cancer this time? My family history is: maternal and paternal grandfather's died of brain tumors, mom died of lung caner at 52, dad died of bladder cancer metastisized in bone, brain and lung at 66. I just lost a very good friend to ovarian cancer and am positively terrified to be honest.
Avatar n tn I agree with Cindy that it is very unlikely to be Ovarian Cancer. However, young girls do get cysts. Actually cysts are very very common in young premenopausal women and 95 % benign. You may want to check the top right of this page; "Health Pages" . It has a lot of information about cysts . Of course we don't know if she even has cysts. And.. we're not Drs. here.. She really needs to be seen my by a Gyn. It could be one of many things.
Avatar n tn I'm 32 and have 2 kids.. I recently had 1 cyst on my right ovary and it was 3.2cm and now it has shrunk to 1.0cm and no on my left ovary I have 2 cysts and there both 3.2cm... Which I'm not worried about the cyst but my doctor wants me to take a CA125 test to make sure my levels are not high, which can indicate Ovarian Cancer. I'm very scared.. What are really the chances of having ovarian cancer.. I'm on the pill only for acne reasons and not very good at taking daily..
