Avatar f tn Excess gonadotropin stimulation can also lead to multiple functional cysts. Malignant cysts can arise from any ovarian cell or tissue. The risk of malignancy generally increases with patient age and the size of a simple cyst. Presence of loculation in the cyst, presence of papillary excrescences which are localized overgrowths of the epithelial lining of a cyst are indirect pointers of malignant ovarian cysts on ultrasound.
Avatar f tn Cysts larger than 5cm and that are complex are worrisome for ovarian cancer. But, the only way to know for sure is to have the mass removed and biopsied. Also, cysts or masses in postmenopausal women are more worrisome for cancer than ones in younger women. I have a neighbor friend who had an 8cm complex mass in her 60's and it was benign. Yet, I had a 6cm, complex mass in my 30's and it was malignant. Ovarian cancer is tricky because it is different for everyone.
Avatar n tn Is it possible to have ovarian cysts when all the medical tests have come back normal
Avatar f tn Ovarian cysts are common and rarely malignant. They typically resolve on their own within 3 or 4 months. Two common types of benign (non-cancerous) cysts that are hypoechoic on ultrasound are endometriomas and hemorrhagic cysts. I hope this helps ease your mind. Best of luck conceiving.
Avatar f tn Hello, This mass can be a cyst , benign or malignant mass. Ovarian cysts in post-menopausal women are common but any cysts in a postmenopausal woman should be taken seriously and ovarian cancer should be ruled out by means of CA125 which you have already got done. Ovarian cysts are considered for removal if they cause pain or have tendency to become malignant or there is elevated CA125. Given your history of abdominal swelling, ovarian malignancy can be a possibility.
Avatar n tn So you are saying hemmoragic cysts are non cancerous?? What if it's septated by a thin wall?
Avatar n tn How large is the ovarian cyst? Ovarian cysts that are 5cm or greater, and are complex (like yours with a solid element) are usually treated with surgery. They have a greater chance of being malignant than smaller, simple cysts. Sometimes, doctors watch and wait smaller cysts and sometimes they choose to operate. Still, most cysts (even larger and complex ones) turn out to be benign.
Avatar f tn Hi There, most cysts are benign and that is especially true in pregnancy. (0.11/1000 deliveries) Most are funny ovarian cysts related to the stimulation of pregnancy hormones. Some are benign tumors, and rarely a cancer. It sounds like your doctor is doing a great job checking you. Many obstetricians would recommend removing an 11 cm cyst in pregnancy because it can twist and sometimes cause irritation to the pregnancy.
Avatar f tn Most ovarain masses, tumors, cysts whatever you want to call them are benign. Normally cancer won't shrink on it's own. Have you had a CA-125 blood test? Not that the test alone meaning anything. Are you still getting your period? Most cysts, etc are left alone until they are about 5-6 cms at which point they can begin causing problems. If in doubt, seek another opinion.
1054801 tn?1327948399 It is scary to do an internet search of your symptoms and come up with ovarian cancer. But, both benign and malignant cysts cause similar symptoms and most cysts turn out to be benign. Based on the information you have so far, I would say her chances are very low that this is cancer. The odds are on her side! Unfortunately, with ovarian cancer, there is no way to determine if the cyst is malignant until it is biopsied.
Avatar f tn It is highly unlikely you have cancer. Over 95% of all cysts are malignant. Doctors will often intermingle the term mass, tumor and cyst. The symptoms you are having are also very common with cysts. Do take a look at the health pages (top right) for more info on the types of symptoms you can get. However, there are times that they can't be entirely sure until you have it removed. Do you know what kind of cyst you have? When are you having surgery?
Avatar f tn I did have pressure, pain and frequent urination. Both benign and malignant cysts of that size can and do cause problems. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure if a cyst is benign or malignant is to have surgical biopsy. The CA-125 is not a good test for determining malignancy. It can be normal with advanced ovarian cancer and high with benign conditions. It is best used as a tool after you have already been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Avatar f tn t think you need to be worried based on those results. Cysts that are worrisome for ovarian cancer are usually 5cm or larger and complex (have solid parts). Hemorrhagic cysts are very common. Most cysts (both simple and complex) do turn out to be benign. Be sure to have follow-up to confirm that your cysts are not growing larger. But, to me, it sounds very good in terms of NOT being malignant.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately, both benign and malignant cysts can cause similar symptoms. It sounds like your cyst is simple (fluid filled) which is not how ovarian cancer shows on a scan. You would likely have a large (5cm or greater), complex mass (has solid parts). Cysts can really hurt! They also can persist. Heat was always very helpful for me. Both hot baths and microwave heat packs can get you some pain relief.
Avatar f tn Yes, I have heard of this. Sometimes, ovarian tissue remains and a cyst occurs. Your appt. on the 16 is with a gyn/onc, right? That will be the best choice. It is possible that you have benign cyst that has occurred from an ovarian remnant. But, any complex cyst has a "chance" of being malignant. Your risk increases if you are post-menopausal. Primary peritoneal cancer does cause tumors in the pelvis in the absence of ovaries. It does behave much like ovarian cancer.
Avatar n tn Hi Marisa, You've had a tough time and I'm sorry. 95% of all ovarian cysts are benign. Complex cysts raise a little bit more of a red flag but can still be benign. Somewhere on this page ( I think Sharon just posted it again) is a wonderful pamphlet that will explain in great detail about cysts. Hopefully, it will help you understand your situation. If you trust your doctor, I would follow his or her advice about surgery.
656838 tn?1224535476 I pray ur cysts return in size or at worst are revealed to be endometriomas if your NP is convinced about the endo the cysts have a very distinctive appearance on ultrasound ... the wait and see approach seems appropriate ... if the size is worrisome they will probably opt to remove them in a number of ways ... or if the composition is complex they would have to remove them to rule out ovca ... i hope this helps ...
Avatar f tn Hi , this is the ovarian cancer forum for women diagnosed or fighting ovarian cancer, Im afraid none of us on here can answer what type of treatment she will have as we are not medical professionals . If you have any questions relating to ovarian cysts there is a very good forum where you will find a lot of information and some very nice ladies with experience of cysts who will try to help you .
921657 tn?1243700001 Therefore this study concluded that the presence of ovarian cysts does not seem linked to ovarian cancer. This article appeared in on online edition of American Family Physician in April 2004. http://www.aafp.org/afp/20040401/tips/25.html also summarized here http://www.uptodate.com/patients/content/abstract.do?
Avatar n tn If you are 40-50, then perimenopause is a possible cause. But, ovarian cysts at any age can change your hormones and cause these types of symptoms. Unfortunately, no two ovarian cysts show themselves in the same way. So, it is hard to say without having tests to rule out all other causes. In general the list of symptoms you describe sound like they could be related to menopause. But, if you are under 45, then that is less likely.
Avatar f tn Once cysts get to be over 7cm or so, there is concern for ovarian torsion plus larger cysts have a higher risk for malignancy. But again, most cysts are benign. Hopefully, yours falls into this category. Please keep us posted. And try to remain calm!
Avatar m tn but think of (or make up) reasons why the cysts should not, could not, must not be malignant...and then think on those things as the reasons why the cysts WILL be benign... Watch funny movies, meditate, look at beautiful pictures, listen to funny jokes... your beliefs CAN help.... but yes, until you move from the "potential to the actual reality" the fears will try to linger in your mind. Know that many are wishing the best for you...so try to wish for the best for yourself.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, both benign and malignant cysts cause the same types of symptoms as they grow. If your cysts is 5cm and complex, then I would not recommend the "watch and wait" approach, but rather ask for a referral to a gynecologic oncologist. These doctors have the most experience in removing malignant tumors and their skill can make a difference in your proper staging, treatment and overall prognosis.
Avatar n tn 95% of all ovarian cysts are benign.. At that size it will need to be removed... Good luck...
