Polycystic ovaries can be misinterpreted as complex cysts. The reason for this is that the cysts in PCOS are a cluster of simple cysts that can give the appearance on imaging as one (larger) cyst with septations.
However, most ovarian cysts, tumors and masses are benign / non-cancerous. Ovarian cancer is rare but, sadly, typically has a poor prognosis mainly because it isn't diagnosed early.
Polycystis Ovarian Syndrome was named for the appearance of the ovaries (which often are bumpy looking with lots of cysts on them), but it is certainly not the only symptom. It is important to understand that just because a woman have ovarian cysts doesn't mean she has PCOS. Blood work can help to diagnose PCOS. The cysts that appear with PCOS are a result of egg follicles not fully maturing or being released.

The typical presentation of ovarian cysts associated with PCOS is a strand of pearls which cannot always be differentiated as separate cysts on ultrasound. These types of cysts do not require treatment.

Do ovarian cysts cause extreme fatigue? I have for cysts. One of them is a complex cyst measuring 4cm. I have had them for at least a year and being treated with birth control. I get abdominal pain, back pain, pain on my thighs, bloating and nausea. However, what really affects my daily life is the fatigue. Hi I’m 22 and have two children . I have frequent big ovarian cysts I have had cystectomys 3 times in the past 3 years. Cyst just means fluid with a skin over ti - think of a blister. In PCOS, the cysts are ovarian follicles. that means , around each egg cell there is a circle of cells called follicular cells that produce hormones. Those cells help mature the egg. Every month one egg is selected to mature and to ovulate - that is to pop out of the ovary. In PCOS, ovulation rarely occurs but multiple egg cells with follicle cysts around them develop.
t harmful per say but depending on the kind of cyst it could burst, could cause an ovarian torsion etc. Many women have cysts and very large sizes. Depending on the type of cyst you have it might have to be removed surgically.

I suffed from ovarian cysts since I was 14.. I'm 34 now and have just been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome.. though I haven't had a cyst that has caused me pain or discomfort in years..
The best thing to help combat and minimize the occurrence and severity of an ovarian cyst I found was exercise!! The release of serotonin somehow helps.. but I've become an avid Zumba goer and not only did it keep the cysts at bay, but it's a lot of fun..

Erm I just got told hemaroid? I think! They're not doing anything apart from monitoring it but I can't explain the horrendous pain I'm in when I get one if my pains! It needs sorting but I don't know what todo next!
Unfortunately, PCOS does cause infertility due to absent or irregular periods, but there are treatments to help with ovulation and weightloss. Ovulation and periods help to shrink the cysts down. I'm sorry that you're going through this. But don't give up hope. There are plenty of women with PCOS that went on to conceive and give birth to healthy babies. Just keep in mind that you need to get supplements for hormones, such as progesterone to help carry the pregnancy to full term.
