1175033 tn?1492204828 You can walk, hike, bike, do low impact aerobic exercise, yoga (carefully - certain positions you'll want to avoid), tai chi, swim, light weight training, etc. You'll probably be told not to lift anything heavier than 20 or 30 pounds, and to be careful to avoid falls. After my hip surgeries, I think my toughest task was to remember not to cross my legs at the knee. :) When and if you have children, that'll be a bridge you cross when you come to it.
1176578 tn?1263756689 I am a 48 year old female who was diagnosed with osteoarthritis (left knee) nearly 10 years ago. After multiple tries on NSAIDS which made me ill, my orthopaedic surgeon settled on pain management (narcotic) which I have been taking for the past six years. While not an ideal situation, I follow my prescription to the letter, never taking more than prescribed. Over the past year I began to experience joint stiffness in the mornings.

A Baker's Cyst also popped up last month at an also bad knee (torn ligaments never corrected). As of a few weeks ago, my Rheumatologist told me I have osteoarthritis in my hands. Last week I had a bone scan and was told I also have osteoporosis. I take 10 different meds a day( asthma, thyroid, high blood pressure, hot flashes, ibs, gird, and lupus) and am so tired of it all.

Avatar f tn My recent OS said 10 years for TKR and I only have one chance. I've also heard other OS say 15 to 20 or longer depending. I went to a siminar on joint replacement and it scared the heebe jeebe's out of me. The OS said if a 2nd TKR on the same knee is needed that more bone will be comprismed and the patient will experience much more pain with every replacement after the first.
Avatar f tn I first noticed the pain in my outer right knee in yoga class, and thought that maybe I was kneeling an earring or zipper. I looked down to see...nothing. It has now spread to my left knee. Like all of you, I'm experiency a sharp stabbing sudden snap of pain, ONLY when kneeling. I went to an orthopedist. He said all the x-rays looked fine, and that he'd never heard of this specific type of knee pain. He recommended Advil and not kneeling (uh, thanks, doc.

Avatar n tn Hello; for the past few months I have been experiencing a pain in my knee, it is just to the outside of the patella. It is a very sharp pain, like an electrical shock. It happens totally at random. It can happen when I am walking, sitting, sleeping, etc. When the pain is not occurring, my knee feels completely normal. When it happens, it usually happens every few seconds or minutes, then stops for several hours. I am not aware of any injury or unusual stress to that area.
Avatar n tn My husband who is 70 had a total knee replacement 6 weeks ago and the pain seems to be intensifying rather than diminishing. He had a childhood injury to this knee, then another operation 13 years ago but is crying with the pain most of the time and has gone from ordinary pain killers to needing morphine. He has physiotherapy 3 times per week, also hydrotherapy and acupuncture, they all say he is making some progress but very slowly and keep telling him exercising will relieve the pain.
Avatar n tn I am new here and I would greatly appreciate any explanations and/or solutions anyone could point me too. I am in dispair with this problem. I have electric like pain behind my right knee so severe that I often scream. I have had it for almost 9 months, in attacks lasting a minute or less, which now come 8 to 10 times a day. At first it was milder, less frequent, and it went awayf for days at a time sometimes. Now it's a nightmare that nobody seems to have an idea how to treat.
Avatar f tn I have had mild osteoarthritis in my right hand, of and on. Now I have knee pain, both knees, elbow pain, foot pain (orthotics (4 diff pairs) haven't helped). Not severe enough to take meds. Have been sleeping on a magnetic mat for 3 years. Doesn't seem to help. Have been going to osteopath, masseur, acupuncturist, nutritionist (treating inflammation). No real relief. Other issue (related?) is poor blood circulation (circulatory disorder). Not overweight (120lbs at 5'4.

Avatar n tn Do you experience any grinding, locking, catching, or giving way of the knee? Grinding is characteristic of osteoarthritis; locking and catching are characteristic of meniscus injuries and osteochondritis dissecans (meniscus injuries are much more common than osteochondritis dissecans); and giving way is more characteristic of ligamentous injuries. Are there any positions that make your knee more or less comfortable? What is the quality of your pain (sharp, shooting, dull, etc.)?

Avatar m tn Drinking wine can ward off early symptoms of knee osteoarthritis, according to recent research from the UK. Drinkers who sipped 4 to 6 glasses of vino a week were 45 percent less likely to develop knee osteoarthritis than those who abstained from alcohol. But it's not alcohol that contains the antidote for better health; it's the specific ingredients found in wine that keep your creaks from becoming more serious. (Beer drinkers actually increased their risk of arthritis!
1508881 tn?1313118501 Like I just walked miles or something. I went to a Rhuemy who told me that I just had osteoarthritis, runners knee and she had no idea why my hands hurt. She didn't do blood work and I was in the office for probably 10 minutes. I'm currently seeing a pain doctor who is treating me for my spine problems. I also have really bad fatigue. I sleep 8 hours a night every night but I wake up feeling just as tired as I did when I went to sleep. I've tried adjusting the hours I sleep to no avail.
483733 tn?1326802046 Just google best exercises for osteoarthritis. I am so sorry to hear about this! But, yes, it does give you some reasons for why you've been feeling the way you have. Avatar f tn Exercise can help reduce stiffness and pain, and it can also help you lose weight, which takes pressure off aching joints. Losing as few pounds can cut the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis by 50% for some women. Although OA typically affects the knees, your hips, hands, lower back, and neck may also be affected. Always ask your doctor before doing any exercise! Warming up with gentle stretching can help get your body ready for your workout.
Avatar n tn You may have arthritis, or some bulging in the spine that is pinching on the nerves. I have osteoarthritis in the lower spine as well as the hips and knee (and other places). An MRI scan showed progressive degenerative disease (osteoarthritis) as an annual bulge. I get a lot of pain all down my legs and doctor says this is referred pain from the back. Sometimes the pains are tolerable.
Avatar n tn Hi Dear Synvisc is used to relieve knee pain due to osteoarthritis (OA). It is approved for those patients who do not get adequate relief from painkillers such as acetaminophen, or from exercise and physical therapy. Synvisc is injected directly into the joint to restore the lubricating properties of normal joint fluid. The therapy is generally well tolerated. However, it may not work for everyone.
199177 tn?1490502134 Nutritional Supplements There is solid evidence indicating that glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate are effective for knee osteoarthritis. These natural compounds were found to decrease pain and increase mobility of the knee and were well tolerated and safe. Other dietary supplements, such as fish oils, also show some evidence of benefit, although more research is needed. Herbal Remedies It has been difficult to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of herbs.
Avatar n tn As your skill builds, the added poses become increasingly challenging in different ways, which makes yoga an exercise routine that grows with you. Another basic yoga concept is that everyone is on his or her own path, progressing at his or her own pace. So leave behind the competitive spirit or fear that you’re not as good as others. Be sure to let your instructor know you have arthritis so he or she can help adapt the poses to match your personal physical limits.
Avatar m tn Anyway, constant icing and elevation of my leg/knee helps with some physical therapy. I meant to share with you that Yoga stretching has helped me immensely. My pain reduced almost half with this. I managed to go from everyday anti-inflammtories to 5 -9 days per month or every 4-5 months.
Avatar m tn My hip will hurt and then it goes down the back of my leg all the way to the knee, and sometimes my lower back on the left side will hurt as well, not exactly where the spine is but... I was just wondering if anyone knew what this was caused from? Haven't been able to find any answers. Thanks so much for your time!

Avatar m tn I started the pills because of knee pain. I had three knee replacement surgeries, 2 PKRs and one redo a TKR. My knees are the best they are going to get, can manage without pain killers. But I was still on the pills because of my shoulder. After my third knee surgery, I came off of methadone but stayed on the Norco. I've been clean from Norco since Jan. My shoulder is getting worse every day. I've been in tears for three days.
