Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis symptoms swelling

osteoarthritis

Avatar n tn I am afraid that I have developed osteoarthritis in my hands, esp. in the thumb joint. I experience pain up to 5 on 1/10 scale, but not swelling. After I ride my bike my hands hurt for several days, maybe the handlebar is too big around. The symptoms developed shortly after I broke my wrist (Collies fracture) two years ago. I realize that if I have this problem it isn't going away. How do I keep the damage to a miminim? I use Ibuprofen for pain with fair results.
Avatar m tn I understand your concern regarding your symptoms. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and it causes pain, swelling, and reduced motion in the joints. if there is no pain associated with the joint cracks or pops, this may be caused by the soft tissue in a joint. Knee popping may also occur if the patella is slightly out of alignment, and rubs on the adjacent tissues. Other causes of joint noise is the snapping of tendons or scar tissue over a prominence, or cavitation.
408795 tn?1324939275 I have extensive Osteoarthritis in my upper back and neck from an accident I was in over 20yrs ago. I had an accident and I broke my right leg and my left arm. As a result my right leg is slightly bowed and therefore around a half inch shorter than my left leg. As a result it has affected my back and neck. Lately my legs have been swelling and itching, mostly the left. I certainly feel it's all related to my right leg injury.
1378884 tn?1315509445 In a nutshell, osteoarthritis is wear-and-tear on the joint. It can happen at any age, not just to "old people". It can be brought on by an injury, a congenital deformity, overuse in a sport or job. RA is a malfunction of the immune system in which it mistakes joint tissue, mainly the cartilage, as something that must be attacked and eliminated. This causes the typical swelling, redness, heat, and over time, damage that causes pain and disability.
3060903 tn?1398568723 Flares are periods of increased disease activity during which people's arthritis symptoms, which typically include joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, are more severe. People with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often find that flares come and go in waves throughout their lives. The duration of flares varies from a few days to several months. The specific symptoms and their severity may also differ between people and situations.
Avatar n tn If you are old then these symptoms of pain and swelling could be due to meniscus injury. You are also having problem with your knee extension which suggests there could also be involvement of your femoral nerve which innervates quadriceps muscle. I think you should be seeing your surgeon back again and decide regarding further management. Have you got any imaging of your knee? If yes, what is the report? Keep me informed if you have any queries. Bye.
1326991 tn?1274932997 The hand swelling could be due to water retention. It could also be arthritis...osteoarthritis I would think. Your other symptoms sound like anxiety...especially once you mentioned the anxiety. An elephant sitting on your chest sounds like bronchitis, anxiety, lung problems ( such as asthma). Vision problems can be related to so many things...muscular dystrophy, etc...too many to list here. I really don't know what to tell you. Perhaps a new doctor with a different view on things?
408795 tn?1324939275 If the diuretic isn't helping the swelling, could the swelling from another cause, such as osteoarthritis? I'm pretty sure that if lasix "stops working" they can prescribe a diuretic pill for you that contains more than one type of diuretic. There are 3 basic types of diuretics; each of which work in a different way. Attached is a link describing diuretics by Mayo Clinic. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/diuretics/HI00030 Good luck with this.
Avatar m tn Joint swelling in my fingers and toes, muscle ache in my forearms, random swelling bumps on the back of my neck arches of my feet and heels, and swollen lip. I have no allergies and have not seen any insect bites. The pain is mild and annoying. Could it be stress?
Avatar f tn It isn't a constant pain, but it happens often when I walk around for more than 50 ft. I have also been getting swelling in my feet, along with minor pain in my ankles but that could likely be unrelated, I'm not sure. I'm mostly just worried about these hip pains and how they are still persisting this long after. My mother has Avascular Necrosis and so I am somewhat familiar with it. She has both hips replaced and apparently has it in other parts of her body as well, shoulder Hemis ect.
139792 tn?1498589250 I feel tightness in my feet.More tightness is in the left feet. there is a mild swelling in feet.Tightness is felt whenever i try to be aware of my feet. Trhere is slight numbness in both the feet. I am 78.I have no diabetes,: no iron deficiency: no B12 deficiency; Reflexes are normal on physical neurological examination. It is not pain. Avatar f tn I have had the swelling too. My fingers typically...when the weather warms up. Once I had taken a long car ride and both my ankles swelled so much I couldn't stand on them. They mentioned gout...but it has never happened again. A few months back my index finger swelled and became red (and hurt like the devil)...just that one time. I think it's all part of the FM symptoms. I hope you feel better soon.
Avatar f tn I have had symptoms that have been increasing over the years. I am now 54 years old and have tried to stay in shape and stay active and have kept my weight down most of my life (has gone up 10 lbs in the last year). I have an elevated ANA-IFA Titer that is 1.16 homogeonous, ELISA normal, normal SED rate, normal thyroid levels, CRP has been elevated in the past but not with my last labs.
Avatar n tn Hi Carla, You have a nice name and you are pretty young too. Your symptoms of pain with dramatic history of knee swelling and redness suggests either it is ligament tear or meniscus injury. Further more your symptom of feeling locked at joints adds to the diagnosis of meniscus injury as locking and catching are characteristic of meniscus injuries. I think it is indeed meniscus injury of your knee causing the symptoms. Have you consulted any doctor? Is yes, what does he have to say for this?
2167803 tn?1338533351 but have a lot of arthritis, but I have also had tendonitis and it might be that--the tight feeling. I know that unbearable pain. Do you have swelling? Have you done too much exercise lately? Does your low back hurt also?
Avatar n tn Have you been tested for any other autoimmune disorders? Here is a check list that may be helpful in getting a diagnosis if this is the case. http://www.thyroid-info.com/articles/autoimmune-checklist.htm There are many things that can cause the swelling ect that you are having but this is a general area to start getting checked. I take black cherry extract for my osteoarthritis and it works great for the swelling ect. I hope you get a diagnosis soon and get better quick. Best wishes.
786881 tn?1236560228 seems to take the approach that she wants to really look into this and make sure that I'm getting the help I need. I had swelling in my abdomen and face about a week ago, but not in my fingers or ankles, that was what prompted me to make an appointment to finally go see the new Dr.
Avatar n tn Almost four months after surgery, I am still experiencing massive swelling and excruiating pain with inflammation. I was having a great recovery for the first ten days, then BAM! My leg, knee and ankle swelled to gigantic proportions. My doctor has said only that I have arthritis in my knee and I have to be patient. On at least three occasions, I have been in tears in his office and asking what to do about it. He still tells me be patient. This is surely not normal.
Avatar n tn It is gets pretty painful and very sensitive to touch and pressure. Occasionally I get some swelling around the area. These episodes typically last around 15-20 minutes, sometimes up to half an hour. What can cause this and what can I do to prevent it?
Avatar n tn I have horrible osteoarthritis in both knees and am currently receiving a series of shots in my knees. I have degenerative disc disease and herniated disc L-4 and L-5. I have horrible pain in my left outer thigh. It is sporadic, but when it happens all I can do is scream!!! It feels like fireworks on going off. If anyone know what that is or has any advice please let me know. My doc put me on gabapentin and said it is neuropothy, it has not helped at all.
Avatar n tn Hi, Since when are you having these symptoms? Are you on any medications? Is your blood pressure and blood sugar in the normal range? Have you consulted a doctor for your symptoms? There could be several causes for the symptoms you are having. Have any xrays been done? Which joints are involved? Does the pain shift from one joint to another? Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes stiffness and pain in the joints.
Avatar n tn I told my doctor last month that I wanted off this med to see if this med was the culprit for many of my symptoms. Breathing problems, swelling, indigestion, etc. Has anyone else felt there is a connection? Also, I was on Premarin years ago and do not recall the same thing happening. Is premarin and Estrdiol of the same properties? Thanks for any help.
Avatar n tn When I first sought medical help, I was feeling a pain in my right side (right under the rib cage). My blood tests were actually normal (at the time I was several weeks sober). When the pain persisted, they did a CT Scan and found fattly infiltration of liver. At this point, I feel fine if I don't drink. If I do, I get a pain pretty quickly. The longer I stay off alcohol, the better I feel.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, raynauds, sjogrens, osteoarthritis, and I am not sure they are the correct diagnosis. I have all the symptoms of FMS but with severe fatigue that strikes after I go away for a weekend (travel over 30 miles) and get little sleep, stress also causes it to happen. I am in bed sleeping for sometimes over 24 hours and physically unable to get up and function past just going ten feet to the bathroom and sometimes I need help with that.
1477978 tn?1289505731 Ok! The test numbers were seperate, now bunched together. If anyone can read this, the first numbers are the result and secondary or following numbers are the reference interval. The test basically showed everything normal except the ANA, and I couldn't get anymore info on that (like a titer test). Don't know how that works but I had went back for more tests and they wanted to know why. I told them I'd already gone to three other Dr's for 2nd opinions...
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Eagles in March of 2006 after going to 2 ENT doctors and having my tonsils removed because they thought it was some kind of cyst or tumor in my tonsils. My symptoms were the foreign object in the throat feeling, trouble swallowing, food getting stuck in my throat, sore throat 24/7, voice changes. After they removed my tonsils the previous December, I still got food stuck in my throat a couple months later and I still felt the huge lump in my throat...
1216899 tn?1288573925 With all the sites out there that have info on Vitamin D, their just doesn't seem to be one that has all the symptoms that can accompany vitamin d deficiency. I'm going to list my symptoms, so that others may have some insight, in layman's terms. I hope anyone else with the deficiency would also post theirs.
Avatar n tn I had mine inserted this past Feb. I just started having the exact same symptoms. I am going to take a hpt. Let me know if you find out whats causing your problems.
Avatar n tn I have had so many symptoms over such a long period of time, and no real diagnosis other than Hashimoto's. I find it hard to believe everything is not connected. Here are my symptoms presented in order of appearance. 1. Traveled out of country, was very sick with sore throat, white blisters, for over a month. Finally got over it with antibiotics. Now I get sinus infections regularly. 2. Joint pain started in legs. I have had this intense pain in my legs (and sometimes arms) for six years now.
Avatar n tn Hi Sebastiandelacroix- I am having some of the same symptoms as you and am wondering what it is also. I am interested in knowing if you have some of the others I have had...along with the involuntary twitching in my legs and numbness and tingling in my arms and hands I have had fatigue and migraines. My doc put me on a heart medication for my migraines and they have subsided for the most part but now the twitching and arm/hand probs have arisen.
