Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis risk reduction

Avatar f tn TMJ stands for temporal mandibular joint (jaw joint) and my osteoarthritis is in my TMJs. There are also discs in the TMJs, and they can become displaced. One of mine is displaced with reduction, the other without reduction. The one 'with reduction' means it goes back into the right place, if I remember correctly, when I open my mouth. The one 'without reduction' for me remains in the wrong position- a forward position- whether my mouth is opened or closed.
136956 tn?1688675680 I considered getting nerve block shots for my migraines (I also believe TMJ plays into some of my migraines), but opted against it due to the co-pays with each one and how many I would have to commit to getting done, along with the risk each time. I'm sorry you had a bad recovery from your TMJ surgery in the past. What do you mean by 'DDD'?
1069378 tn?1255215132 The MRI shows that my lateral meniscus is torn again and x-rays show I have osteoarthritis. One of the orthopedic surgeons I saw suggested trying Synvisc injections before resorting to surgery, especially since the surgery will involve removing the rest of my lateral meniscus which will in turn worsen the osteoarthritis. Before I went to any orthopedic surgeons, I was trying acupuncture (I've had 4 or 5 sessions already and they've helped with my stiffness and range of motion).
Avatar m tn I have seen an opthalmologist who says there is nothing wrong with my eyes, but said perhaps it could be due to circulation or perhaps nerves, I have had a couple of treadmill tests for blood pressure and ecg in the last few years, and also a carotid artery scan, they are all normal, my blood pressure is also fine, I do have osteoarthritis of the neck, could this be affecting my eyesight in someway by restricting the blood flow, or affecting the nerves, I would be extremely grateful for your a
657653 tn?1224680706 Hi, How are you? Degenerative arthritis is also called osteoarthritis or "wear and tear" arthritis. It is a form of arthritis that causes the gradual breakdown of the cartilage that cushions the joints. Movement then causes the bones to rub against each other, which is painful. Degenerative arthritis is characterized by inflammation, breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of the joints. This can be caused by obesity, bad posture, repeated trauma or injury, and overuse.
Avatar n tn Well, yes, partial meniscectomy does increase the risk of osteoarthritis, especially in recreational runners. However, the actual risk varies from person to person. It depends on your family history, weight, other diseases you may have or develop, your foot wear, how you use the knee etc. Please discuss with your doctor. You doctor and physical therapist will be able to assess your risk and guide you regarding the best rehab and use of knee in your case. Take care!
Avatar n tn Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes stiffness and pain in the joints. Osteoarthritis involves growth of bone spurs and degeneration of cartilage at a joint. It is very common in adults older than 45 and can cause joint pain. Joint pain may also be caused by bursitis (inflammation of the bursae). The bursae are fluid-filled sacs that cushion and pad bony prominences, allowing muscles and tendons to move freely over the bone.

Avatar n tn I am afraid that I have developed osteoarthritis in my hands, esp. in the thumb joint. I experience pain up to 5 on 1/10 scale, but not swelling. After I ride my bike my hands hurt for several days, maybe the handlebar is too big around. The symptoms developed shortly after I broke my wrist (Collies fracture) two years ago. I realize that if I have this problem it isn't going away. How do I keep the damage to a miminim? I use Ibuprofen for pain with fair results.
513154 tn?1340225289 I have a question about Osteoarthritis and the pain that comes with it. Last November I had 5, 6, and 7 upper vertebra fused together and feel so much better in that way BUT i can't take anti inflammatory medications for my Osteoarthritis, Tylenol doesn't even help a bit and non of the arthritis over the counter meds help either. My question is... is there a non narcotic pain medication that I can take every day? I am 45 years old and very healthy besides my arthritis. thank you!

Avatar f tn I have Osteoarthritis and it is getting worse. I taken Celebrex, Norco, Tramadol and Vicopren. None of these are working. I don't have insurance and go to a public health clinic. They don't seem to know what to do. Could you please advise me on what I can take that will help with the chronic pain and will be inexpensive.
Avatar f tn I've had mri's of my spine and shows osteoarthritis with bone spurs in cervical thoracic and lumbar. This was done in 2007 (i was 35), now i have this horrible tendonitis in both wrists and i'm on prednisone. Could this be related to the arthritis? i'm seeing an ortho but he doesn't know about the osteoarthritis (i was just rereading my reports and it jumped out at me). What should i expect with this diagnosis?
Avatar m tn i was also wondering about the osteoarthritis as my dr told me that i have severe degenerative osteoarthritis of the lower spine (I forgot the numbers), hips, left shoulder and both feet. I had major surgery last summer and mesh was used to attach part of my bowel to my spine. My dr figures that this may have jump-started the arthritis issues. Currently i have probs walking, bending and overall it hurts to be on my feet for more than 20 mins at a time.
Avatar m tn / I knew my condition was bad b/c of the amount of pain I am in but wasn't expecting that especially @ 32 with a 4 yr old and 7 month old!! Anyways, he adviced pain meds and synvisc-one injections until we couldn't control the pain enough. I tried the injections. I won't lie the are a bit painful. My right one was just uncomfortable. The left one hurt way worse. I have no idea why but it even swelled up and I had to stay off it about 24 hours b/c of all the fluid on it.
765775 tn?1366024691 • Substantial improvement – 4 or more points reduction on the NRS, or 50% or more reduction on the VAS; • Moderately important improvement – 2 points NRS reduction, or 30 – 36% VAS reduction; • Mimimally important change – 1 point NRS reduction, or 10-20% VAS reduction. From that it was surmised that most patients consider a treatment satisfactory or successful if they experience at least a 50% reduction in the level of their pain.
Panda Some patients have contraindications to acetaminophen, however, if they have severe liver disease and to ibuprofren if they have kidney disease or at a higher risk of bleeding such as if they are on multiple anticoagulants/antiplatelet drugs ("blood thinners"). Thank you, Dr.
Avatar n tn l am taking 30 mg of dihydrocodeine 4 times a day 3 days a week for help with pain from osteoarthritis when l do my checkout shift...no need to take when not working unless l have a spell in the garden............
Avatar m tn Why do people say condoms are 40-50% risk reduction, and not mention the gender specific risk reduction? According to this study, it seems like condoms actually provide a 90% risk reduction for women and very little risk reduction for men in discordant heterosexual relationships . . . can someone help to explain this please? Is the 40-50% that people quote for condom risk reduction just the average (women 90%, men 0%, so average = ~45% risk reduction. . .
Avatar f tn Handsfield on March 27 reported a 90% reduction in risk for herpes with condom use. I have seen 50% on this forum, and I'm wondering why the discrepancy? I'd like to be accurate when I tell any new partners about risk reduction.

5789562 tn?1374459029 This is a relative risk reduction. The absolute risk reduction is a decrease from a 3% risk to a 2% risk. In practical terms, this means that in men under the age of 65 with pre-existing heart disease, 100 (the NNT- Number Needed to Treat) have to take a statin for 3 years to prevent 1 heart attack. The other 99 men receive no benefit.
