Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis of wrist and hand

Avatar n tn PT, after heavy useage of my hand it hurts, should I continue to push? And what about ice or heat, heat helps relieve the pain, if there is internal swelling am I increasing the scaring? Thank you.
Avatar m tn I have a bump on the underside of my wrist right below my thumb on my right hand. Its been there for 2 years. It gives me a slight pain when hold heavier objects and if I press on it.
Avatar n tn I would like to know the cause of my wrist ganglions as I am a croupier at a casino for 20 years and would like to know if there are any more croupiers that suffer from this problem.
Avatar m tn The goal of a wrist fusion is to get the radius in the forearm, the carpal bones of the wrist, and the metacarpals of the hand to fuse into one long bone. The ulna of the forearm is not included in the fusion. The joints between the ulna and the radius are what allows you to turn the palm of your hand up and down. By not fusing the ulna, you should still be able to rotate your hand. However, you will not be able to bend your wrist after the operation.
Avatar f tn so RA or osteoarthritis can increase your risk of development... I had it on my leg after a car accident and after physical therapy for it I finally got through it... the bursa was absorbed by my body is what the doctor told me... it hurt like fire burns! I hope you feel better soon and it clears up quickly. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I get sharp, shooting pains across the back of that side of the wrist that run up into the back of the hand and into the lower arm. Sometimes the pain goes all the way across the elbow into my upper arm. But it never goes into the shoulder. The pain is worse with my palm pointing either toward the floor or toward the midline of the body. Rotating the palm upward or away from the midline causes slightly less pain. I do not notice any difference in pain if my elbow is straight or bent.
Avatar n tn I have had significant pain in my left wrist for 5 years and in my right for 4-4.5. While the left was worse for most of that time, the pain levels are now essentially equal, depending upon use. (I am right-handed) The pain is centered on the back of my wrists, in the center between the bones. There is no stiffness, swelling, or heat radiating from the joints. Pain occurs primarily when the hand is bent back at an angle to the arm and when twisting.
Avatar f tn I know by now you may have resolved this issue, but after my first child, I had this kind of pain and it turned out to be pregnancy induced tendonitis. A hand doctor gave me a shot in each of the wrists and the pain went away in a few days.

1091980 tn?1295545031 ) I also had the grind test which was very painful at the base of the thumb and at the front of my wrist. I have been given a cortizone injection a few weeks ago but still experience the above symptoms. However, the area which was swollen for months I have tried the epl test and cannot raise my thumb very far from the table. Is all this happening from arthritis at the base of the thumb? I am concerned as I seem to be experiencing more symptoms as time passes.
1467506 tn?1286416617 I've also been checked for RA and don't have it. I have a bit of osteoarthritis in my back and knees but the doc says it's normal for my age. With my fingers, I don't have any swelling or redness, just the aching feeling so for me, I believe it's from my FM. Check with your doc though !! Good luck.
Avatar n tn 3 weeks ago, I noticed wrist soreness and then a lump/cyst/nodule coming out of my right wrist between the thumb and the pulse location. It is bone hard, immobile, and does not hurt when it is pushed. At the same time I started experiencing bilateral pain in both hands very similar to what happened 12 years ago. In addition, for the past month I have had several periods of just not feeling great. Almost like I'm coming down with something, but never get sick. I've never measured a fever.
152264 tn?1280358257 I don't know what that bump is called, but I would feel a sudden painful shift exactly in that spot with often only the tiniest movement of my hand. Now the same kind of painful shift happens straight across my whole wrist, right where the hand meets the arm. I can be using my hand perfectly normally, carrying heavy things, typing, etc. all day and then suddenly, two or three times a day, I have this sudden painful shift and have to wait a few seconds for it to ease up. Can this be arthritis?
Avatar n tn i will never be able to bend my wrist again and i'm learning how to use my right hand. did you have a x-ray of your hand? that will show if you have good spacing of the bones, now that won't show if you have a tear in the TFCC cartliage or a torn TFCC ligament. That why i would suggest MRI with contrast.
Avatar n tn again i had several more weeks of PT that seemed to help with the Range of Motion but not a whole lot for the on and off shooting pains, oh i forgot to mention that after surgery #2 i had clicking, clunking and ratching sounds in my wrist, i started getting a large bump on the ulnar side which got larger and larger and still lots of pain in the center and both sides of my wrist. aftter each surgery and several weeks of therapy i went back to work even with pain.
Avatar n tn The symptom of yours that stands out to me is the symmetry of your hand problems. Also Osteoarthritis is usually more prevalent in the last joint at the finger tip but I certainly am not a Dr. It is also not usually symmetrical. Take care and let us know.
Avatar f tn She has, for the last month had intermitent pain in her right wrist, feeling of numbness but not totally numb from the wrist bone to the ring and pinky finger but only on that side of her wrist, inflammation on the outside of her wrist, with inflammation of the hand, and she cannot grip or hold anything, and she can feel heat but not coldness on the outside of her hand. I would like to know what could be wrong with her. She cannot go to the doctor because of insurance issues.
Avatar m tn Hello, Without examination,it is very difficult to confirm a diagnosis, but the various possibilities for your hand pain without any history of trauma are carpal tunnel syndrome(the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, leading to pain, paresthesias, and muscle weakness in the forearm and hand),arthritis(rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, gout),Charcot marie tooth disorder(mutations in genes that affect the normal function of the peripheral nerves), diabetic peripheral neuropathy , Dupuytren’s contrac
Avatar n tn It continued, so saw the hand surgeon. He did an xray, and found osteoarthritis (no cartilage in the wrist joint) in my wrist and did a cortizone shot in the wrist, not the cyst. This was in January 2004. I continued to have problems with the cyst, which is now about 2 inches, bulging on the inside of my wrist, and making manual tasks very difficult. It throbs a lot, haven't been able to play golf. So I saw the hand surgeon again in May 2004.
Avatar f tn I was once diagnosed with headaches, neck pain, arm pain and De Quervain's tenosynovitis - could these have been misdiagnoses and actually the pain, headaches, arm pain, wrist pain, and hand weakness been a result of the beginnings on C5 and C6 nerve compression and osteoarthritis? Any assistance and reference materials regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Avatar m tn The possibility of a return of the carpal tunnel problem was also suggested by a physiotherapist just a couple of days ago. The lady spent about an hour feeling every part of my wife's right hand and wrist and offered advice that there seemed to be as much or more pain reaction to her inspection of the wrist as there was in the hand bones. Thank you again. I've printed off your message.
Avatar m tn I have tried nerve glides for the elbow and stretches for the neck and for the hand. It feels numb and kind of like sand paper felling at the tips of these fingers. I also have had hand pain, like shocks at the tips of all my fingers in the left hand for 24 years. This too feels like sand paper, when I play my guitar strings. Fretting hand (left hand). I have no pain in the wrists and have had two carpal tunnel and one thoracic outlet surgery.
Avatar n tn I was reaching for an item on the top shelf and bent my wrist down at 90 degrees. I then bumped my wrist on the edge of the shelf or something and felt a brief pain in the wrist. I didn't think anything of it. My fingers were fine for hours because I washed my hands and pressed on them fine. After a few hours suddenly my index finger tip hurts on that hand and nothing else. The wrist does not hurt. I then remembered what happened at the grocery store and think that might have done something.
272434 tn?1228610809 I finally got my results on Friday from previous MRI of spine and study done on hands. Well I do have carpal tunnel of both hands right hand worst and I need surgery, doctor says its very common for fibromyalgia patients to have it. I also have osteoarthritis of the spine. Needless to say I've been very upset. More medications and surgerys in my future. The doctor says I'm too young for this lol, it usually happens to older people.
Avatar n tn I have osteoarthritis in my wrists and finger, worse in my right hand . I have had cortisone shots which does not help , this was caused from a injury at work . I also have signs of carpel tunnel , this has been going on for over 2 yrs.

Avatar n tn I have yet to find a definite answer, though I have had my hormones tested and discovered all of my hormones are out of balance. I'm in the process of trying bioidentical hormone replacement to see if that helps. Hope you find some answers.
Avatar n tn I also fractured, so rained and or broken both my wrist and my elbow and my sholders r dislocated and my neck dips all the way Down to the left and I can't dip or barely turn my head right. I have possibly broken my neck or its close to it. I defenetly have herniations and have had an mrI before for my neck and was shown that I had bulging disc but it is 100 tmes worse now then when I had the mro done.
Avatar f tn If you do a lot of repetitive work, ensure that you get adequate rest breaks. Wear a support strap around the wrist, hand and thumb if this helps give you some relief. Book an appointment with your doctor. Let us know how you get on. Best wishes.
