Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis neck exercises

Avatar f tn I've had mri's of my spine and shows osteoarthritis with bone spurs in cervical thoracic and lumbar. This was done in 2007 (i was 35), now i have this horrible tendonitis in both wrists and i'm on prednisone. Could this be related to the arthritis? i'm seeing an ortho but he doesn't know about the osteoarthritis (i was just rereading my reports and it jumped out at me). What should i expect with this diagnosis? I have terrible neck pain and headaches and numbness on left side of body.

Avatar n tn Although I have had 2 surgeries on my cervical spine for ruptured discs and lax ligaments (am now fused from C3-C6), I am now told that I have significant osteoarthritis at C1-C2 (atlanto-axial joint) Accupuncture did relieve a lot of the associated muscle spasms but I still get bone pain sometimes even at the base of my skull. I've also wrenched the left side of my neck twice in the past 6 weeks at work.
Avatar n tn After having a surgery to fix on particular problem that left me with a whole different problem I went to three other osteo docs. They all advised me to have hip replacement due to osteoarthritis, but I didn't want to do that without trying every other avenue. I recently had a 'live blood analysis' and discovered a tiny organism called 'mycoplasma arthritides' was responsible for my problem. I was told that a trauma like my surgery couild have triggered the organism.
Avatar n tn You can mention this when you see your doctor as he may refer you to phsyiotherapy for neck exercises. But unfortunately there is no cure for this. As we get older the cartilage in between each vetebrae (bone) shrinks. Best wishes.
5536514 tn?1373503602 I am 65 and I am afraid my bones are falling apart. I have osteoarthritis. I also experience bone cracking in my neck. The same for my knees. I can almost tell when it's going to rain. The back pain starts as soon as I get up in the morning. After I have taken a muscle relaxer it is still there but only slightly. I do not want to become dependent on pill. I have hepc and cirrosis of the liver. Can you shed a little light on my problem.
Avatar n tn She has also fainted couple of times after severe pain in the neck. She is also experiencing pain in both the shoulders and neck. Multiple doctors have tried multiple things but nothing has helped more than adding minor improvement. Earlier her HB was very low which is well in the range since last one year but even then her pain has not gone completely though the pain has reduced. She is 56 years old and is not having any other illness.
Avatar f tn I have been having a lot of issues with my neck and back. My symptoms started when I was 22, 7 years ago. It started when I woke up one day and had this pressure on one side of my neck, right under the base of my skull and behind my ear. I had this constant feeling of needing to stretch or crack my neck all day. Well this feeling never went away. Eventually I got the pressure on the other side of my neck as well.
Avatar n tn EXTREME NECK POPPING FOLLOWED BY NECK/SHOULDER PAIN: Woke up one morning in Oct and neck started making popping sounds (hundreds of times a day). I never crack my neck so it was unusual. Within a week, sharp pains started in my neck & shoulder (always on the right hand side). For the last 3 months, I have had these pops (300 times a day) and sharp quick pains (50-100 times/day). Chiropractic services was no help in Oct/Nov. Physical therapy excerises during all Dec did not help.
1088646 tn?1256953523 Basically massage your neck area very gently so as not to bring on a migraine or headache with opposite hand to opposite side of neck. So left hand massage right side of neck very gently and then do the other side. For your upper back put pillow on your bed. Place your upper back on the pillow so your head is hanging off the pillow. Arms out to the side. This gives you a good stretch through your chest and upper back. And do some gentle breathing.
974371 tn?1424656729 It can also be due to osteoarthritis or osteoporosis. With physiotherapy, avoid those movements or exercises that aggravate your pain. Try not to lift weights or bend as this can worsen your symptoms. Try applying local analgesic creams. Place ice over the painful area every 1-2 hrs for pain relief. Sleep on a firm surface with a pillow under the knees and take OTC pain medications like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen. Ensure to take them after food. Regards.
20886884 tn?1568228560 Osteophyte is a big word for bone spur or more basically, a bony lump. They often grow next to joints that have osteoarthritis. They can cause a joint to become stiff and painful or they may actually not have any symptoms. Are you having pain and stiffness? You are more likely to have pain if they rub against another bone or spur or if they restrict movement or if they are close to nerves and impact them. If you have osteoarthritis, these develop more readily.
Avatar n tn About three years ago, I began having pain in my neck, specifically at the C1 vertebra, where the neck meets the skull. I visited my Dr. and he did a manual examination (about 30 sec) and gave me stretching exercises. However, the pain continued. I visited a Chiro, who prescribed x-rays, and said the pain came from my neck not curving. He did manipulations for months, but it would provide temp. relief at best, which became less with time.
Avatar n tn would significant breast reduction surgery be likely to reduce the pressure on my cervical osteoarthritis or the nerves in my neck and shoulder, and how would I go about getting it approved? A few years ago I inquired and did not qualify but I did not have all this pain then and now I do. Please please help me figure out what to do next. I am running out of options. I have a followup with my neurologist very soon.
Avatar n tn ) The crunching sound is so loud inside my head I swear other people should be able to hear it, but they can't. I have to do neck exercises with the migraine, my neck is so stiff I need to turn my head from side to side, back and forth, tilting it from left shoulder to right shoulder, rolling my head from my chest to shoulder to back to other shoulder and around and around. It is so loud, the crunching. Does anyone else notice this "crunching" associated with migraines?
Avatar n tn How many of you have been bothered by periodic stiff neck, pains in the neck and shoulders, and related pains or numbness in the neck, shoulder, and arms. I have really noticed an increase in this problem since becoming SVR, and think that it may be connected to both the former HCV infection, which often provokes joint problems, and also to all the interferon that I did over the years.
Avatar f tn Perhaps you could see a different doctor in the practice and ask for referral to a bone specialist and physiotherapy for help with special exercises to stop the neck are seizing up and possible traction on the neck. Having a physical problem can cause depression. You need to speak with someone who can explain to you the bone problems that you have and help you with pain management.
Avatar n tn And it is always more painful when I lay down and when I wake up in the morning. I am going to try doing some arm and neck exercises since I don't know what else to do at this point. I will let you know if this helps and if you find something that helps, please let me know. ***@**** Thank you!
748543 tn?1463449675 ” Treating hundreds of patients including those with TMJ pain and all kinds of neck or cervical neuralgia, over the past 15 years in my Clinic at Miami Beach Dentistry, I have come to see this connection first hand. The body works as a complex unit, and when trying to treat it all parts need to be addressed based on their own merit. What does this mean? I’ll elaborate.
Avatar f tn For the past 2 months my mum (age 51 and very active) has woken up (after about 5 hours of sleep) with excrutiating neck pain. She's done x-rays and such and the results came back that she had osteoarthritis of some of the disks between the cervical spine. So she's been seeing a physiotherapist who has prescribed exercises, as well as a chiropracter who told her to use a certain pillow.
748543 tn?1463449675 One of the most difficult concepts to get across to my TMD patients and other doctors is the connectivity of the Jaw and the Neck. In fact, it is my strong belief that TMD/TMJ should really be classified as a Craniocervical Disease and hence fall under the umbrella of medical coverage rather than treated strictly as a dental problem. To the Neuromuscular-minded dentist, "Occlusion" is an extension of general Postural Consideration.
Avatar n tn (discectomy with metal plate and four screws) In 2005, started having neck and shoulder pain and went to physical therapy. They had be doing neck strengthening exercises, that put me in terrible pain. So then just tried to live with it. In 2006 it progressively got worse, I started having symptoms in the left shoulder and down the left arm in partnership with the muscle and neck pain already. Many physical therapy appointments, trialing different pain meds, and other items....
Avatar n tn Since then I am having trouble with pain in the neck and shoulder area just below the fusion area. I wake in the morning with a headache then turns to pain in lower neck and shoulders. I have talked to the neurosurgeon who did the surgery and he shrugged his shoulders and said I have no idea and sent me back to my neurologist. He gave me a series of injections in both shoulders and the pain stopped for a couple days but then came right back.
1770280 tn?1314588560 All that to say, either I've 'out grown' the FMS or I am so used to it that I'm unaware how much I hurt. I have arthritis in my neck, back, hip and knees and bone-on-bone in my knees ... so I may have FMS pain which is secondary to the rest of my aches. I still get around, do my stretching exercises, walk my dog, kayak and generally make a nuisance out of myself online ... Twitter mostly about politics and FaceBook with family and close friends.
Avatar m tn Sometimes, it is caused by uncomfortable sleeping position which puts unnecessary stress to your neck. Other possibilties are meningitis and cervical osteoarthritis. . In meningitis, the pain in the neck becomes worse as you try to move your chin downward. It is accompanied by fever and vomitings usually. A crunching sound while trying to move your painful neck coupled with a tingling sensation in your upper extremities can point to cervical osteoarthritis.
Avatar m tn I've been to a hand therapist and she believe it is some type of repetitive stress injury and since then I've only play a little and have used splints and exercises etc. I feel things have been getting better but slowly. Recently, I went to a sports medicine hand doctor and he had said I have osteoarthritis. I reviewed the radiologist notes on the xrays taken and he couldnt find an signs of arthritis. I am concerned that the Dr.
Avatar f tn Have her sleep on her side with her shoulder tucked underneath the pillow such that only her neck and head are resting on the pillow. Movement tends to help reduce the pain from osteoarthritis so it makes sense that she is in less pain during the day when she is up and moving about. Also, taking an anti-inflammatory medicine at night before she goes to bed might help reduce the pain that manifests during her sleep.
Avatar n tn This can happen due to overuse of computers, work involving straining of neck, canal stenosis, bone disease, spondylosis, poor posture etc. A few neck exercises, or chiropractors can help relieve the pain, tingling and numbness in arms and legs. A MRI of the cervical spine may ne required. Please consult a neurologist. Hope this helps. I think you should discuss these possibilities with your doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining.
Avatar n tn Base of skull and below neck bone pain (new since November ) so saw a Ortho spine doc. He took xrays and said C1-2 has arthritis badly. Did I have RA? Told me not to do any more range of motion exercises, just OTC meds for comfort and let him know if I get worse (?) Hmmmm. Decided to make appt with my PC to ask if I should see a Rheumotologist. I had a second ACDF for severe bones slippage back and forth from 'lax ligaments' and rupt. discs and am now fused from C3-C6.
