513154 tn?1340228889 Last November I had 5, 6, and 7 upper vertebra fused together and feel so much better in that way BUT i can't take anti inflammatory medications for my Osteoarthritis, Tylenol doesn't even help a bit and non of the arthritis over the counter meds help either. My question is... is there a non narcotic pain medication that I can take every day? I am 45 years old and very healthy besides my arthritis. thank you!
Avatar m tn Hey, My hubby has been diagnosed (with MRI) with severe osteoarthritis is his jaw. My question is.....could excess/regular use of alcohol worsen the symptoms? I am hoping that perhaps a lifestyle change can alleviate some of his issues with OA. He was on Celebrex for a short period but doctor took him off (as its not great long term) to see how he feels. Any other tips, thoughts or helpful ideas are appreciated. Thanks!
3060903 tn?1398568723 Medication may be prescribed to treat osteoarthritis flare-ups. Over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications can relieve OA symptoms. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used to reduce arthritis symptoms. Those available OTC include: aspirin ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) naproxen (Aleve) NSAIDs are a short-term solution for joint pain, and if taken for long periods they can cause stomach bleeding.
Avatar n tn I am trying to find a pain medication that I can safely take. I have severe osteoarthritis that is very painful and debilitating. I did take celebrex for a month which helped greatly but my cardiologist felt that it may be too great of a risk to take. Is there anything else that would not affect my INR or cause a risk of bleeding? I realize that narcotics wouldn't be a problem but I do not want to go in that direction at all.
440194 tn?1204711957 Some people IN RECOVERY ACUSE me of relapse but I am taking my medications as prescribed by my VA Doctor who is aware that i have been in Recovery for over 2 years i started going to AA because they said that if I'm was on Methadone for pain that I could not serve on committees that I was on so I left NA I had not done any street drugs for 20 years so I really belong in AA i thought and When they found out that I had a Brain Tumor Surgery they would not sponsor me or hang out with me I still had
1069378 tn?1255218732 The MRI shows that my lateral meniscus is torn again and x-rays show I have osteoarthritis. One of the orthopedic surgeons I saw suggested trying Synvisc injections before resorting to surgery, especially since the surgery will involve removing the rest of my lateral meniscus which will in turn worsen the osteoarthritis. Before I went to any orthopedic surgeons, I was trying acupuncture (I've had 4 or 5 sessions already and they've helped with my stiffness and range of motion).
Avatar f tn How is it used? The ANA test is ordered to help screen for autoimmune disorders and is most often used as one of the tests to diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Depending on the patient's symptoms and the suspected diagnosis, ANA may be ordered along with one or more other autoantibody tests. Other laboratory tests associated with presence of inflammation, such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and/or C-reactive protein (CRP) may also be ordered.
Avatar n tn Mild to moderate knee arthritis can be treated with several different medications, including a few medications that can be injected into the knee joint. The two most common types of injections are Synvisc (also sold under the name Hyalgan) and cortisone. Both medications have shown some effectiveness in studies. While neither will reverse the effects of arthritis, they can help to alleviate symptoms and provide long periods of pain relief Refer http://orthopedics.about.
13863066 tn?1431832284 like everything is OK. I used to have more good days then bad, now it's hard to remember a good day. I started to get these pains in different parts of my body at different times, a few years ago it was in my right hip down my leg and lasted about 6 months. It hurt bad enough so that my doctor ordered an MRI, of course it didn't show anything of significance except for my old back injury. There is hardly any cushion between my lower vertebra discs.
Avatar n tn Hello, Your mother seems to be having osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that is caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of one or more joints. Cartilage is a protein substance that serves as a "cushion" between the bones of the joints. Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative arthritis. Treatment includes reduction of weight, exercise and support devices like splints, canes, walkers, and braces.
Avatar f tn A traumatic injury or ankle sprain is common cause of ankle swelling and pain. Other causes are rheumatoid arthritis, gout, vascular obstruction etc.In osteoarthritis there are degenerative changes and damage to the articular cartilage. Diagnosis of osteoarthritis is confirmed by physical examination and X-rays of the ankle joint. Medications like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are being used as they are effective in reducing the pain of OA in all joints.

Avatar f tn It has gotten worse with pain all the time unrelieved with NSAIDS, and exacerbated with use. I also have radiating pain to the rest of my hand. I just wonder if it osteoarthritis, or the thing in my finger. I have not swelling or inflammation that I notice.
Avatar n tn He uses heat on them and also takes Glucosamine to help. Glucosamine supplements are widely used for osteoarthritis, particularly knee osteoarthritis. In osteoarthritis, cartilage -- the rubbery material that cushions joints -- becomes stiff and loses its elasticity. This makes the joint prone to damage and may lead to pain, swelling, loss of movement, and further deterioration.

Avatar f tn Hi, Since when are you having these symptoms? Are you on any medications? Is your blood pressure and blood sugar in the normal range? Have you consulted a doctor for your symptoms? There could be several causes for the symptoms you are having. Have any xrays been done? Which joints are involved? Does the pain shift from one joint to another? Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes stiffness and pain in the joints.

Avatar m tn It is similar to aspirin and ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil). NSAIDs are a powerful class of drugs that are used to treat pain and inflammation. However, they are not without adverse effects, especially if taken long term, i.e. daily for 3 to 6 months continuously. NSAIDs often worsen GERD and may cause ulcers in the stomach. They may also increase blood pressure and cause kidney damage if taken at high doses. I understand you had surgery to treat the pain.
Avatar f tn The first treatments for osteoarthritis, including osteoarthritis of the shoulder, do not involve surgery. These treatments include: Resting the shoulder joint. This could mean that the person with arthritis has to change the way he moves the arm while performing the activities of daily living. For example, the person might wear clothing that zips up the front instead of clothing that goes over the head. Or the person might prop up hairdryers instead of holding them up for long periods of time.
Avatar f tn Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are medications that are used to reduce pain and inflammation in the joints. Steroids can also be used to be injected inside the joints by an expert. Alternative treatment with the food supplements glucosamine and chondroitin could not relieve symptoms of pain and stiffness for you so a series of injections of hyaluronic acid (Synvisc, Hyalgan) into the joint can sometimes be helpful, especially if surgery is not being considered.
Avatar f tn You're welcome. I didn't see your post to geminigirl stating you were allergic to Celebrex before I posted. As JayBay said, there are a lot of non-narcotic medicines available for OA. You can probably do a google search on "non-narcotic osteoarthritis medications" and I bet a lot of good websites will pop up with a list of some of the different medications available.

Avatar f tn Subsets of Osteoarthritis Primary osteoarthritis is characterized by joint pain, stiffness, limited range of motion, and weakness. Primary osteoarthritis is also referred to as idiopathic, meaning, there is no known underlying or predisposing cause. Primary osteoarthritis is recognized as the most common form of osteoarthritis. Secondary osteoarthritis has an underlying or predisposing cause.
Avatar f tn The cause for my pain is a ruptured disc at L4-L5 that is severely impinging the L5 nerve roots along with bone spurs, osteoarthritis, thickened ligaments, and spinal stenosis. I also have a bulging disc at L5-S1 that is impinging the S1 nerve roots. Medications and epidural steroid injections have helped my pain immensely. I would highly recommend that you see a spine orthopedic specialist or a physiatrist for a diagnosis.

535822 tn?1443980380 One of Big Pharma's biggest dirty secrets is that most medications are in fact, antihistamines that treat the localized symptoms of pain - but not the cause. There's no credible evidence that proves "aspirin therapy" can lower heart attack risk either. In fact, aspirin damages the stomach, causes ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, hemorrhagic strokes and has recently been linked to causing cancer.
