Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis medications used

osteoarthritis

513154 tn?1340225289 I have a question about Osteoarthritis and the pain that comes with it. Last November I had 5, 6, and 7 upper vertebra fused together and feel so much better in that way BUT i can't take anti inflammatory medications for my Osteoarthritis, Tylenol doesn't even help a bit and non of the arthritis over the counter meds help either. My question is... is there a non narcotic pain medication that I can take every day? I am 45 years old and very healthy besides my arthritis. thank you!
Avatar f tn A traumatic injury or ankle sprain is common cause of ankle swelling and pain. Other causes are rheumatoid arthritis, gout, vascular obstruction etc.In osteoarthritis there are degenerative changes and damage to the articular cartilage. Diagnosis of osteoarthritis is confirmed by physical examination and X-rays of the ankle joint. Medications like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are being used as they are effective in reducing the pain of OA in all joints.
Avatar n tn I am afraid that I have developed osteoarthritis in my hands, esp. in the thumb joint. I experience pain up to 5 on 1/10 scale, but not swelling. After I ride my bike my hands hurt for several days, maybe the handlebar is too big around. The symptoms developed shortly after I broke my wrist (Collies fracture) two years ago. I realize that if I have this problem it isn't going away. How do I keep the damage to a miminim? I use Ibuprofen for pain with fair results.
8317359 tn?1397621339 Three years ago I was diagnosed with a severe case of osteoarthritis of the spine and I'm told there is NO cure for this medical condition. The doctors have claimed all they can do is treat me for the pain and as of today's date, I have yet to be pain free with this problem. My PCP claims in the 30+ years he has been practicing medicine, he has never seen such a severe case of osteoarthritis as my case? I find that somewhat difficult to believe!
1069378 tn?1255215132 The MRI shows that my lateral meniscus is torn again and x-rays show I have osteoarthritis. One of the orthopedic surgeons I saw suggested trying Synvisc injections before resorting to surgery, especially since the surgery will involve removing the rest of my lateral meniscus which will in turn worsen the osteoarthritis. Before I went to any orthopedic surgeons, I was trying acupuncture (I've had 4 or 5 sessions already and they've helped with my stiffness and range of motion).
Avatar m tn i was also wondering about the osteoarthritis as my dr told me that i have severe degenerative osteoarthritis of the lower spine (I forgot the numbers), hips, left shoulder and both feet. I had major surgery last summer and mesh was used to attach part of my bowel to my spine. My dr figures that this may have jump-started the arthritis issues. Currently i have probs walking, bending and overall it hurts to be on my feet for more than 20 mins at a time.
Avatar f tn You're welcome. I didn't see your post to geminigirl stating you were allergic to Celebrex before I posted. As JayBay said, there are a lot of non-narcotic medicines available for OA. You can probably do a google search on "non-narcotic osteoarthritis medications" and I bet a lot of good websites will pop up with a list of some of the different medications available.
Avatar f tn I also took Darvocet and there is nothing else for my pain except the real strong stuff and I am trying to hold off as long as I can before I would take those, I have osteoarthritis in my joints, I need a hip replacement and I have osteoarthritis in my back also, I dont know what to take for pain.
Avatar m tn Do not have bad osteoarthritis, just trying to keep bones strong. I read about Osteo K in a very reputable magazine (Bottom Line) in May 09. They were very positive about it.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Celebrex (200 mg a day) for about five years for bone on bone knee osteoarthritis. It has worked well for controlling my pain (not perfect but pretty good). I also get some lower back pain (combination of osteoarthritis and nerve stuff) that only happens when I over-do (like trying to garden, etc.). I typically need a day or two of Vicodin for that as the Celebrex does not seem to work for that.
440194 tn?1204708357 Some people IN RECOVERY ACUSE me of relapse but I am taking my medications as prescribed by my VA Doctor who is aware that i have been in Recovery for over 2 years i started going to AA because they said that if I'm was on Methadone for pain that I could not serve on committees that I was on so I left NA I had not done any street drugs for 20 years so I really belong in AA i thought and When they found out that I had a Brain Tumor Surgery they would not sponsor me or hang out with me I still
Avatar f tn Hi, Since when are you having these symptoms? Are you on any medications? Is your blood pressure and blood sugar in the normal range? Have you consulted a doctor for your symptoms? There could be several causes for the symptoms you are having. Have any xrays been done? Which joints are involved? Does the pain shift from one joint to another? Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes stiffness and pain in the joints.
Avatar f tn I researched this a bit on the web, and found that it could be caused from either medications that I take or from the lower back injury (compressed/herniated discs). The medications are oxycodone, Nortyptalyne (sp?), and Ambien. Have you come across patients with this issue. The weird thing is, I have been on these medications for a couple of years now, and this just started a couple of weeks ago.
Avatar f tn Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are medications that are used to reduce pain and inflammation in the joints. Steroids can also be used to be injected inside the joints by an expert. Alternative treatment with the food supplements glucosamine and chondroitin could not relieve symptoms of pain and stiffness for you so a series of injections of hyaluronic acid (Synvisc, Hyalgan) into the joint can sometimes be helpful, especially if surgery is not being considered.
Avatar n tn Does anyone know a good PM doctor that is willing to prescribe pain meds in central fl. It appears most there has been alot of misuse, which make it hard for a person whom really needs help. I have degenerative disc, osteoarthritis, and it's getting harder to just function.
Avatar f tn also known as spinal osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint disease that is due to aging and time related wear and tear on the vertebrae (bones) of the neck and back. Disc desiccation: Each intervertebral disc has a lot of fluid in its central portion. The high fluid content gives these discs the soft, spongy quality that allows them to act as a cushion and shock absorber between successive vertebrae.
Avatar f tn org/wiki/Obesity#Management The main treatment for obesity consists of eating less and exercising more.Medications may also be used. There are two commonly prescribed medications for obesity. One is orlistat, which reduces intestinal fat absorption by inhibiting pancreatic lipase; the other is sibutramine, which is a specific inhibitor of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in the brain, therefore decreasing appetite.

Avatar f tn I have Osteoarthritis and it is getting worse. I taken Celebrex, Norco, Tramadol and Vicopren. None of these are working. I don't have insurance and go to a public health clinic. They don't seem to know what to do. Could you please advise me on what I can take that will help with the chronic pain and will be inexpensive.
Avatar f tn I've had mri's of my spine and shows osteoarthritis with bone spurs in cervical thoracic and lumbar. This was done in 2007 (i was 35), now i have this horrible tendonitis in both wrists and i'm on prednisone. Could this be related to the arthritis? i'm seeing an ortho but he doesn't know about the osteoarthritis (i was just rereading my reports and it jumped out at me). What should i expect with this diagnosis?
Avatar m tn / I knew my condition was bad b/c of the amount of pain I am in but wasn't expecting that especially @ 32 with a 4 yr old and 7 month old!! Anyways, he adviced pain meds and synvisc-one injections until we couldn't control the pain enough. I tried the injections. I won't lie the are a bit painful. My right one was just uncomfortable. The left one hurt way worse. I have no idea why but it even swelled up and I had to stay off it about 24 hours b/c of all the fluid on it.
