Avatar n tn I have hypothyroid, High blood pressure, high cholesterol, Sjogren's, some unidentified autoimmune disease, osteoarthritis, my back is mess. I'm always in pain. I did everything right for most of my life, and now at 53 (starting around 50) I am so sick and miserable. I'm sure the MS people might feel the same. There's nothing wrong with what you are saying, but I also get angry when people tell me, *oh, just change your diet and lose weight.

Avatar n tn This week we discuss the causes, prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis. Cartilage between the bones in the joints usually provides for a very smooth surface with very little friction (similar to rubbing baby oil between your fingers). Osteoarthritis begins as the cells which making cartilage in the joints begins to grow abnormally. The result is an initially thickened layer of cartilage, which soon becomes thin and develops cracks on the surface.

469720 tn?1388149949 As you may have noticed by now, the focus of this forum is cardiovascular disease(CVD) prevention. The statistics speak for themselves. CVD is the leading cause of death in the US and worldwide. Although we have made substantial progress in the development of medications to combat the causes of CVD like high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes; the rapid proliferation of these diseases virtually negates and medical benefit. In other words, we are treating the consequences, not the cause.
Avatar n tn I know I have osteoarthritis in my cervical disc area, C4, C5, C6, and the physiatrist wants to do a facet joint epidural injection. The problem is that my pain in not in the back of my head or neck, nor do I have tingling or numbness. The EMG test on my muscles in my arms was completely normal, so I'm not sure I want this injection.
921323 tn?1268679412 As a physician who believes strongly in the power of personal choice to influence one’s health outcomes, I tend to favor an investment in healthy lifestyles. But in all fairness to the other side of the debate, one can also argue that prevention hasn’t worked out so well either. Despite the fact that we have effective treatments, we are not very effective in their prescription or compliance.
1684282 tn?1505701570 National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Opioids are a large family of biologically active peptides that bind to and activate receptors in humans and can reduce pain and induce euphoria. Humans have a voracious appetite for opioids to the extent that our own brains produce them (eg, endorphins), and many people avidly consume those that are produced by plants or synthesized by factories in our environment.

Avatar f tn The clinical implications of these mechanisms and their possible prevention and treatment also are discussed. Opioid Receptor Physiology A discussion of opioid tolerance is best prefaced with a review of opioid receptor physiology. Researchers have identified three types of opioid receptors: mu, delta, and kappa receptors. These receptors are distributed in various locations within the spinal cord and brain structures.
931217 tn?1283484935 Spayed females had an increased risk for urinary tract stones, urinary tract infections, and urinary tract tumor, but not other causes of FLUTD. Intact females had a decreased risk for most causes.[122] While most cases of FLUTD are treatable and not life-threatening, urinary tract obstruction in males is a very serious condition. This occurred in about 12% of cats with FLUTD symptoms, and the risk is higher in castrated males cats.
Avatar n tn I'm afraid I'll end up in a wheel chair! Does anyone know what causes it? I also have really really bad knots in my back from it, and get leg and arm cramps often.
1852058 tn?1320162300 Also, get a HHV6 IFA test for antibodies and a CD57. HHV6 virus reactivates when you are immunosuppressed and causes MS like symptoms. A CD 57 test looks at your immune system. If it shows anything under 60, you have a good chance at having Lymes and coinfections of HGE, Babesia, Bartonella or all 4 at one time. These are INTRACELLULAR bacteria and WILL NOT show up on standard blood testing. Do you retch/throw up occasionally? chronic headaches? eye pain? sore feet/ ankles?
Avatar n tn my ob/gyn will not give pain pills and the guy who xrayed my back did not give vicoden. just vioxx for osteoarthritis. i did not ask him for the vicoden, though perhaps he would have prescribed...maybe i am in for a long haul of real and imaginary pain..HELP how will i know when it is real pain or not? can anyone give me some help...i have only 5 pills left.......
Avatar n tn This causes a lot of inflammation and subsequent acute pain, although this is only part of the picture, I'm sure. The good news, from what I understand, is that after the bone heals up properly (which they say can take months), things should be mostly back to normal, although there is a slightly higher risk of back problems in the future. You need to be careful to NOT go to a chiropractor initially (I made that mistake).
Avatar n tn Also, if you are a person who has a high stress lifestyle, as in over worked, sleep deprived, no exrecise and poor nutrition I almost guarantee that these accumulative factors are all related to the headaches so prevention would be the key ingredient, not medication. A disc problem is a whole other issue and that also might be the case, but it may be as simple a tight muscles.
585414 tn?1288944902 Sudden inspiration, bounding friendliness, abrupt joining of a million different causes [volunteer]. Sometimes I can side-swipe it by focusing it on a creative project I get obsessed with until it's over. Lately I haven't been able to. And if it's worse than just a minor bout of hypomania, there hasn't been any way I can actually stop it. I can forestall it, calm it down with a nice, hot bath or an early rest at night, but not get rid of it until it's over.

211940 tn?1267884866 Hi, has shoulder bursitis been ruled out? I have copied and pasted some information on this below. If it is shoulder related (and you have "transferred" pain), the fact you put "pressure" on it at night from lying down could explain why your pain increases at night. "The Causes of Shoulder Pain Defined Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa. A bursa is a tiny fluid-filled sac that functions as a gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body.
363682 tn?1299492962 This may be a normal reaction of your body since hot and spicy meals as well as alcohol may cause dilation of blood vessels and increase the blood flow to the area which causes the flushing. However,it is best to have this assessed by your physician.Hormonal imbalance, an underlying allergic reaction, and certain medications may cause this. Have your cervical spine checked by your physician. A cervical spine headache may be a differential.
Avatar n tn I just wanted to check in and say thanks to everyone who has contributed their own experiences and findings to this thread. I started this thread nearly 3 years ago (WOW!) and people are still coming forward with the same or similar symptoms.
Avatar n tn As an FYI, I don't drink, don't wear my cell phone on me much and have not gained any weight recently, so I don't think these are the causes of mine. If anyone does get a diagnosis or finds things that work or make it worse, please share.
Avatar f tn Sometimes being dehydrated and cold causes the body to rehydrate faster than it should and you quickly sweat it all out because you try hard to warm yourself up because of the chill itself. 6. Super Warm Bath every night with a bit of sea salt in water. This helped calm the body and rehydrate it from skin down. Worked for me. Less chills. These 5 things helped me out a lot. It might not work for you guys because we are all different but it takes some experimenting to see what you lack.
Avatar n tn I figured out this by comparing my sudden attacks to a condition that my horses have had which is called Hypercalmic Periodic Paralysis. The lack of sodium causes a muscle cramping that makes the horses nearly unable to move when it strikes and the home remedy for this is baking soda and water. This sounded so similar to what I was experiencing that I decided to try it myself. Now I carry some baking soda with me at all times because it can hit you any time ..any where.
Avatar n tn Vitamin D deficiency is caused by something, some underlying disease process so I'd ask my doctor WHY I was vitamin D deficient. It can be cause by numerous conditions. With it that low, I'd want to find out what was causing it. Google "what causes vitamin D deficiency?" and you will come up with many reasons why this can happen the go to your doctor and ask about those conditions. I'd also get a referral from the doctor to a specialist ASAP. An endochronologist might be good.
Avatar n tn It's a common blood disorder that causes easy bruising (fragile capillaries) due to a defect in the platelets. (platelet count is normal, but clotting ability is not). I am going to ask my Dr to test me for it. Have any of you experienced blood loss episodes, including nosebleeds, heavy periods, excessive bleeding after surgery or anemia? I am very curious. Also, I was just diagosed with a Vitamin D deficiency that I have yet to be treated for (going this week).
Avatar n tn I have no idea what causes this and both of my siblings report similar type of pain issues. Friends think this is quite strange. As a teenager, everyone called these "growing pains" but I am 30 years old and don't believe this title still applies. Any ideas on possible causes? A friend of mine recommended acupuncture but of course I cringe at the thought of needles.
