Osteoarthritis big toe

Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis big toe

osteoarthritis

Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my big toe a couple of months ago (I have run a lot in my life and this may have contributed to it). I have since had orthotics fitted at the physio and wear these as much as I can. However, about 3 weeks ago I developed a sharp pain on the outside of my arthritis foot. Its worse when I get up from sitting, resting or sleeping, and usually manageable when up and about, the pain coming and going in waves.
Avatar f tn So I'm up in Alaska right now with limited care available. About four days ago my big toe joint started to hurt a little bit and was sensitive to the touch. Then the following days it has hurt so bad I cannot really walk on it and have to hobble around! I'm working at a fishing lodge and as luck would have it an orthopedic surgeon was staying next door. He felt my foot and said that it was not a bunion or stress fracture and thought it might be gout. I researched this online some...
Avatar f tn I've had hemi toe implants in both big toes and the most important step post op is manually moving the toe to prevent the joint from becoming stiff. It hurts like heck but in the long run it's the only way to prevent build up of scar tissue that would limit your range of motion. I still do have some discomfort but compared to the pain I had before the surgeries I am much better.
Avatar f tn May 15th, I had my big right toe fused with 2 plates and a screw (due to severe osteoarthritis ). At the same time I had my torn brevis tendon repaired. I had been on short term disability since December because of this foot and carpal tunnel /ulnar nerve surgery in March. I couldn't return to work within 6 months and lost my job /insurance of nearly 10 years.
Avatar n tn I have "bone-on-bone" in the joint of my big toe on my right foot, due to osteoarthritis, much pain and getting worse. Short of surgery (which has been suggested) to replace the joint, would synvic1 by injection help? If so, for how long. I am 62 yrs old and the thought of surgery is uncomfortable, BUT the thought of putting up with this pain for perhaps 30 years is unthinkable.
Avatar m tn She can move her toes, but they tingle and are numb. 2 toes are swollen, and she has a black spot on the side of her big toe. Any idea what may cause this, and advice on if she should get it seen right away? She has a doctor appointment in 3 days, but not sure if she should wait. Background: She is being treated for high blood pressure, and has trouble walking due to osteoarthritis in her knees.
Avatar f tn Same thing with the other foot, broke one toe(one next to big toe), and dislocated the one next to it. All that was done was x-rays and wear the black shoe (not the boot). That did nothing for my broken toe, of which I am not even aware of how it got broken, since I have neuropathy of the feet caused by severe spinal stenosis. Yes, I am a mess! Now getting back to the broken toe- It did not straighten up, it is now humped up like a hammer toe, which it was not before being broken.
Avatar f tn Yesterday morning I woke up with intense pain in my right big toe. I have never had this before, but I do have osteoarthritis (manageable pain). I've been doing some reading and the only thing I can come up with is gout. The toe and area surrounding it is just as painful today, and swollen. I am frightened and should have gone to the doctor today. Now I have to wait until Monday unless I go to the ER. I'm taking Rx strength Motrin, but it doesn't seem to be doing much.
Avatar m tn I have been diagnosed with Arthritis in my right big toe, it is extremely painful and very difficult to walk on. The pain is excruiating. I also suffer greatly with Migraine Headaches, to the point of nausea, tunnel vision, sensitivity to light and unable to et out of bed. While I take Aleve for the Arthritis, it is absolutely not helping. I have been given Fiouacet for the Migraines (w/o) codiene, they help somewhat, but my Dr is very apprehensive about giving it to me.
1678656 tn?1369237418 I never saw his, so I don't know what it looked like, but it was in his big toe as well. Looking up gout, it doesn't seem to be what it is, but I know I can't always rely on the internet. ;) Is gout something that is recurring? I also searched bone spurs and osteoarthritis. A friend of mine, also with MS, has some form of arthritis, but I cannot remember what type. It seems that she said it was osteo--but my memory fails me.
Avatar f tn Was told just a bad case of osteoarthritis. I can't even make a fist, my fingers don't bend. They get worse every year. Why can't I take meds for rheumatoid,,why do I have to have joint damage. 2rheumatologist told me that the meds aren't made for my kind of arthritis. Do you have to have the factor in order to be diagnosed with rh. My hands resemble rh hands. What's going on.?
Avatar m tn Is it a click in the big toe joint closest to the nail? Let me know how you went with the clicking as I think mine is doing the same.. how old are you I'm 22 and I know it can be very frustrating..
Avatar f tn I just had an implant to replace my big toe joint 10 days ago because arthritis ate it up.get Checked out by a good Dr and have some tests run to find out what you really have.
Avatar f tn I am a lot older than you and less than 10 weeks ago I had to have an implant put in my big toe. The cause was osteoarthritis which I've had for years but it ate the joint away. I have had arthritis for years. It isn't just for old people. I think it's in my genes..my husband is 12 years older than me and doesn't have any arthritis at all. I have it in too many places to mention but I do know it likes to jump on our weakest joints, whether an injury or surgery.
Avatar n tn I underwent cheilectomy of the right great toe for hallux rigidus (osteoarthritis of the big toe). Things were improving quickly until day 7 when I developed cellulitis (skin infection) at and around the suture site on dorsum (top) of foot. Was treated with IV Ancef and Cipro, with good response. I was sent home after one day (on oral antibiotics) with no weight bearing.
Avatar f tn I had two unsuccessful joint replacements in the big toe. I would not do it again. Now I need the fusion, and I have gotten four opinions. I did not research the first time. This time I want to be sure. I never realized how risky foot surgery is. Most doctors now tell me that they won't do the implants anymore. I feel like a guinea pig. My toe is now in the air and the rest of my foot is being stressed. The toes next to the big toe are turning under it. It's a mess.
Avatar m tn I am 52 and had fusion surgery on a pinched nerve that I had on the L5 of the spine in 2012. I had no problems in 2013. This year, 2014, about a month ago, I started getting a numbness, tingling, pins & needles feeling on my left leg and right foot big toe. I have osteoarthritis and had fusion surgery in May on my right foot big toe that goes numb. The pain would start in my hip/buttock area on the left side and would go down to my outer shin area.
Avatar f tn Is there associated inflammation? Fever? Most likely it can be due to osteoarthritis at the base of the big toe (also called hallux rigidus) which is extremely common. Alternately, it could be due to gout.
Avatar n tn I have never had it in my big toe, always a flare in my insteps or my wrists. When the twinges start it is not just in one area, but in all different areas of my feet and hands.
Avatar f tn It seems to be a wondering pain, but today I notice in the calf more and my big toe is cold. Color seems to be good, not pale and I can't see any red or hot spots. Nor could my chiropractor. She believed it was a ciatic thing. Do you have an opinion on this?

Avatar f tn Subsets of Osteoarthritis Primary osteoarthritis is characterized by joint pain, stiffness, limited range of motion, and weakness. Primary osteoarthritis is also referred to as idiopathic, meaning, there is no known underlying or predisposing cause. Primary osteoarthritis is recognized as the most common form of osteoarthritis. Secondary osteoarthritis has an underlying or predisposing cause.
1467506 tn?1286416617 I had surgery on my foot 2 months ago to remove a bone spur on the top of my foot. I also had a toe (second toe, next to great toe) that was affected by separate pain and had completely turned crooked. The top of my foot - where the spur was removed is still very sore and painful if I wear shoes that tie or walk for any distance. The entire foot feels cramped as well. The toe issue is unchanged - still the same pain as before bone spur surgery.
Avatar n tn he x ray ed it, told me it was NOT broken, I had arthritis in the big toe joint. During this winter we have had a lot of snow, so when I felt tired and sore all over I thought it was from the shoveling or the flu. When the snow finally stopped and I was still sore and my knee was hurting going up the stairs, I knew it was time to see the Dr. again. He x ray ed it and said it showed some signs of change of the arthritis. I was never told I had it in my knee, only my toe.
Avatar f tn I have the same thing for ten years- pain and foot stiffnes in the morning for ten years- better after walking for ten minutes till 2 weeks ago- all of a sudden the pain was severe and constant with a throbbing- no over the counter meds worked so I made an appointment for a podiatrist- he gave me a prescription for naproxen (whitch didn't work and made my stomache on fire for hours) he diagnosed me with mortons toe- if your big toe is shorter than your second toe you have mortons toe- it can cau
