Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis and bunions

osteoarthritis

Avatar f tn Where most people get bunions my foot gets painful and red and from the back of my great toe straight back on top of my foor I get a throbbing pain and sometimes I can't even stand the sheet to touch my foot. Now the other one is starting off and on to hurt. I have been diagnosed with high risk osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. I am wondering if I could have fractured the metatarsals(if thats what they are in the foot) or can it be arthritis causing this burning terrible pain.
Avatar m tn I have mild bunions on both feet, more pronounced on my right foot, and high arches. The bunions don’t cause me pain yet (25 year old female). My mother, her brother, and my grandmother all developed severe bunions that required surgery, so I predict mine will worsen to that point eventually even with good footwear (my uncle certainly wasn’t interested in pointy-toed heels). I’m considering whether to go to a podiatrist.
Avatar m tn This helps tremendously to know that bunions cause pressure and nerve irritation causes the burning and throbbing. I never knew and I'm a nurse!!!
Avatar f tn stretching out the shoes to prevent rubbing on the bunion helps. wearing orthotics can help stabilize the joints in the foot and sometimes slow the progression of bunions..but do not get rid of them. anti-inflammatories (advil) and cortisone injections to the area can help too. if the pain is severe and nothing helps, i recommend having it surgically corrected.
592774 tn?1325393742 She is only 4 feet tall and weighs about 60 lbs. My grandmother had bunions so they might be hereditary. She is wearing inserts in her shoes that are helping them from getting worse, but I wonder if there is any surgery or casting that can be used while her feet are still growing and supple? Her big toe on one foot is already at a 45 degree angle and the other foot was around 60 but has straightened up significantly since we got her inserts.
Avatar f tn It has been feeling this way since June of 2010 and there was no trauma that I know of, but I did wear a pair of shoes that was tight over the metatarsal-phalangeal joint. I have tried stretches, tucking the big toe under and pressing my big toe down lifting my heel with some relief. I recently saw a podiatrist who crafted a shoe insert for me to try with the theory that I have high arches, tight Achilles tendon and very flexible joints, jamming my metatarsal into the ground causing the pain.
Avatar f tn I've had mri's of my spine and shows osteoarthritis with bone spurs in cervical thoracic and lumbar. This was done in 2007 (i was 35), now i have this horrible tendonitis in both wrists and i'm on prednisone. Could this be related to the arthritis? i'm seeing an ortho but he doesn't know about the osteoarthritis (i was just rereading my reports and it jumped out at me). What should i expect with this diagnosis?
Avatar f tn I have Osteoarthritis and it is getting worse. I taken Celebrex, Norco, Tramadol and Vicopren. None of these are working. I don't have insurance and go to a public health clinic. They don't seem to know what to do. Could you please advise me on what I can take that will help with the chronic pain and will be inexpensive.
529224 tn?1400648219 The other knee was about to be replaced in 2012 and an emergency came in and my OP was postponed.I took up hill walking, despite it hurt, aquafit twice a week and swimming lengths (not breaststroke!) - which my consultant had suggested before first knee OP, and my knee (despite being in a worse arthritic state than the first knee before OP!) improved - I don't have pain, or instability anymore!
513154 tn?1340225289 I have a question about Osteoarthritis and the pain that comes with it. Last November I had 5, 6, and 7 upper vertebra fused together and feel so much better in that way BUT i can't take anti inflammatory medications for my Osteoarthritis, Tylenol doesn't even help a bit and non of the arthritis over the counter meds help either. My question is... is there a non narcotic pain medication that I can take every day? I am 45 years old and very healthy besides my arthritis. thank you!
Avatar n tn t tried it myself yet, only because I HATE taking pills, but have heard a few success stories about Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Another thing you can do is start physical therapy. Strengthening the muscles and tendons around the joints helps to slow the degenerative changes.
Avatar m tn I have osteoarthritis in my neck moderate and mild in lower back. Can and adjusment help? will they even do an adjustment me? i seem to be losing sensativity in my legs but dont know if iy du to oa in back nad neck.any help would be great. thank you.
Avatar m tn t expecting that especially @ 32 with a 4 yr old and 7 month old!! Anyways, he adviced pain meds and synvisc-one injections until we couldn't control the pain enough. I tried the injections. I won't lie the are a bit painful. My right one was just uncomfortable. The left one hurt way worse. I have no idea why but it even swelled up and I had to stay off it about 24 hours b/c of all the fluid on it.
Avatar n tn I am afraid that I have developed osteoarthritis in my hands, esp. in the thumb joint. I experience pain up to 5 on 1/10 scale, but not swelling. After I ride my bike my hands hurt for several days, maybe the handlebar is too big around. The symptoms developed shortly after I broke my wrist (Collies fracture) two years ago. I realize that if I have this problem it isn't going away. How do I keep the damage to a miminim? I use Ibuprofen for pain with fair results.
Avatar m tn i was also wondering about the osteoarthritis as my dr told me that i have severe degenerative osteoarthritis of the lower spine (I forgot the numbers), hips, left shoulder and both feet. I had major surgery last summer and mesh was used to attach part of my bowel to my spine. My dr figures that this may have jump-started the arthritis issues. Currently i have probs walking, bending and overall it hurts to be on my feet for more than 20 mins at a time.
Avatar f tn Does osteoarthritis generally cause an elevated Sed Rate and and elevated C-Reactive Protein? Anyone have these tests elevated with your condition? Thanks!
1039578 tn?1293978096 t even help. what can I do? i already get cortizone shots in my feet for my bunions and hammertoes... at 29 I know gross :( but i need help, what can I do? and what can I ask my doctor to perscribe me? I can't keep feeling this aweful it's like i got beat up in my joints with a crowbar they feel broken both sides! does it sound like lupus? or arthritis?
Avatar f tn Hi,thanks in advance for any responses...much appreciated and my drs. do not know. I've been menopausal since Nov.2011(my last period) and I've been diag.hypothyr.about 3-5 yrs. I'm currently on estrogen patch+progesterone+150 mcg synthroid. Wondering if anyone has had experience with hip (actually where the leg and hip meet)pain that disturbs their sleep? Also on another note wondering the best labs to target any such problems, whether hormone or thyroid related.
Avatar m tn The osteoarthritis may progress slowly over time. Strengthening the muscles that support the neck and cervical spine may lesson symptoms of pain and discomfort. ~•~ Dr. Parks This answer is not intended as and does not substitute for medical advice. Avatar n tn Hello, I am 19 years old and have had pain in my feet around the navicular bone since I was a kid, but always thought it was normal. I recently went to an orthopedic surgeon and heard that I have slight bunions and excess navicular bones in both feet. I've had pain for years and years so I don't know how much putting heat on my feet for ten minutes a day could help (what the doctor said to do).
1477978 tn?1289502131 I have had problems with my joints since my early teen years (I'm 36 now, male). Played baseball from little league through the 15yr old Babe Ruth league as a catcher. I was diagnosed with "osteochondritis" of the knees at around age 13. I have bad feet they tell me are collapsing, also with severe "hallux vulgus" (bunions). During my early teen and pre-teen years I sprained my ankles a lot, several times required using crutches.
272434 tn?1228607209 I also have carpal tunnel and I have osteoarthritis. Both very painful, and I also need surgery, and I told them not right now. I take a long time to heal, and that alone is enough for me not to have surgery. I also use splints at night, and I have had to cut back on my quilting, but I refuse to stop all together. The osteoarthritis I have in all of my joints as well as RA, I have a triple whammy.
