Avatar n tn i ended up having 7 bypasses open heart surgery on may 14th, 2008, my question is, 10 days later, i am having to cough alot and it is making me sore. i am afraid that i am geting something wrong with my lungs. what do you think. This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/253855'>Issues with breathing after bypass surgery</a>.
Avatar f tn What surgery did you have? I believe Bypass i also called open heart surgery, but I don't know why. I had mitral valve surgery at age 67 and had none of the postop symptoms, so my experience says only you are have more trouble than I did. I suppose my sternum may be a little uneven and there are times when I wish the doctor had used a straight edge to cut me open as the long vertical cut is on a bit of an angle compared to the perpendicular.
Avatar m tn Hey I'm am about to turn 23 years old and i had open heart surgery when i was 20.. I'll say i havent worked out like i should but im young and small type of guy so its not like i really bad out of shape. My heart may be out of shape though. I still have chest pains like a clinching pain then all of a sudden its like a relief. It squizes tight then lets loose. I think alot of it may be do to stress of school and girls etc..
Avatar f tn Many individuals following open heart surgery have a memory problem for about 6 months post operation. Open heart surgery puts the individual on heart and lung machine so the fibrosis is probably not an issue during the operation. The main problem with the heart is the valve orifice and that can be corrected without open heart surgery (sometimes). The aorta regurgitation can be the cause of shortness of breath as well as the pulmonary issue. What is the operation expectation.
714309 tn?1235737612 Well, three weeks ago today I had my open heart surgery. They let me out of the hospital after six days. I was ready to go home too :) My surgeon tried his best to repair my mitral valve, but found it was too badly damaged and calcified from my previous surgery when I was two years old. He ended up having to replace it after trying for literally hours to repair it. I was in surgery for over six hours and he actually took me off the bypass machine to test the repair.
Avatar f tn Since then I have had numerous surgeries to correct different problems with my heart. This coming May I need another open heart surgery. I am extremely scared. I know just about what my surgeon and parents have told me about the whole process starting from the day before to a couple months after. If anybody has gone through this surgery around this age, could you please let me know? Maybe what the whole process was like? How you felt pre-surgery? Post-surgery? How much pain?
Avatar f tn Open-heart surgery is any heart surgery in which the chest is opened up and the heart is exposed. Procedures like coronary artery bypass and valve replacement can be done in open-heart surgery. Heart transplantation could, I guess, be referred to as open-heart surgery, because it does involve opening the chest and exposing the heart, but I think heart transplanation is usually just called heart transplantation.
Avatar f tn I am 39 years old and I had open heart surgery a year and a half ago to replace my aortic valve and since then I have horrible pain in my chest where they cut through the bone and also under my breasts. The drs have ran numerous tests and haven't found anything....when the pain is there its very hard for me to take deep breaths and is a constant pain; I need help in figuring out what this is because I can't live like this for the rest of my life.
Avatar m tn my husband has problems breathing after open heart surgery. It started during deep sleep and now can happen any time. He goes into these episodes where he seems to fighting for his life and not able to breathe out. They last about 10 seconds but are very scary. This started 5 days after surgery and now its been 21 days and they are still occuring. Doctors have done all sorts of tests but can't find the problem.
Avatar f tn My husband is 31 years old & just went through open heart surgery to repair his mitral valve. He had severe regurgitation. Since before he went in for the surgery he has been taking Cardizem 120 & even after surgery they kept him on the medication with 1 baby aspirin a day. They said they would monitor him for the next few months and decide if he can come off or not. Since then he had his echo cardiogram & they reported his heart muscle function has decreased.

Avatar n tn MANY MANY PEOPLE HAVE A LEAKING HEART VALVE. EVEN VERY YOUNG PEOPLE. IT IS OFTEN CALLED A HEART MURMUR. SOMETIMES PEOPLE MAY NEED A NEW VALVE REPLACED WITH SURGERY, AND EVEN IF YOUR MOM'S VALVE WAS LEAKING THAT BADLY, THESE OPERATIONS ARE DONE OFTEN AND ARE VERY SUCCESSFUL.
478103 tn?1209053846 Also my leg where they took the veins in my leg still swell alot around my ankles and still do not have feeling in the front of my leg, that is still very bothersome, and also my hair is falling out by the handfuls is this normal after heart surgery? It is hard to find anyone my age going that has gone through bypass surgery. I will say on a lighter note, I feel better than I have in years. Any info would much be appreciated.
Avatar n tn I have had the TEE, and a CT scheduled this week along with a meeting with heart surgeon. Our local surgeons only repair mitral valves with open chest technique. I am interested in the minimally invasive option since I have no other health issues. Is there any reason I should consider the open chest surgery? Seems like the obvious best choice is minimally invasive. Thanks.
Avatar n tn Hi I have a coronary calcium score of 577 and my heart arteries are serverly calcified. Are open heart operations (bypasses) with good prognosis with type 1 diabetics? I have been on insulin for 32 years since I was 17.
Avatar m tn All that said, I have done a lot of research on the subject and found other than direct open heart surgery there are other less invasive procedures as well. We will find out from the surgeon which one he is a candidate for. Essentially, we're all scared. I would like to hear from an experienced cardio physician, or surgeon what he may be facing.
Avatar n tn i bet your mum already taking it , these is no other miraculous tablet which can cure what she has apart from an open heart surgery. yes open heart surgery is risky , you never know what might happen , but its a risk you have to take. i hope you will do what' s best for your mother.
Avatar f tn If so, I believe that is not open heart surgery, that is the heart does not have to be cut open as it does for a valve repay. If this is your case, I don't see any relationship/connection between bypass surgery and development of a heart murmur, which I believe is due either to one or move valves for to a breakthrough somehow between chambers. I also believe most cases of heart murmur and benign, and do not require any treatment or medications...
