Olanzapine side effects weight gain

Common Questions and Answers about Olanzapine side effects weight gain

zyprexa

Avatar n tn Both drugs cause similar side effects, but Olanzapine shows fewer motor function side effects than Resperidone in comaparative clinical trials. Both drugs have found to be equally safe on clinical trials. Both cause weight gain, but weight gain with Resperidone is lesser than that with Olanzapine. So once you start treatment, your doctor may adjust your prescription to a higher dose if the starting dose is not effective.
Avatar f tn Hi im desperatly in need to know of a good bipolar medication that doesnt make me gain weight, I was on olanzapine and I gained loads, then they put me on abilifyand I got 13 of the uncommon side effects, then they put me on sulpiride but they are similar to olanzapine, and all the time ive been on lamotrigine, but they dont seem to work as well on their own. At the mo ive stopped taking my meds and finding it hard, can anyone help please?
Avatar n tn Keep in mind everyone is different. Some people will have side effects and or weight gain with a med and someone else on the same med may not. You just never know until you try. I would definitely try the diet and exercise together. If you can it's best to try one new med at a time. Then you know what the Side effects are. When you start 2 at the same time you don't know what is doing what as far as side effects go.
603015 tn?1329862973 Hi I have started to tapper off olanzapine because of the weight gain, I have noticed that after just a week on the reduced amount I have started to have sleep problems, I am finding it harder and harder to get to sleep, then when I do get to sleep I am waking through the night, could this be the reduction in the med and what should I do if anything, im not due to see me pdoc until 1 june when I would be fully off this med.
698408 tn?1256958348 Both medications carry a risk of weight gain but if you know this in advance you can take steps to reduce this. The weight tends to be "water weight", so drinking plenty can help along with the normal steps of regular exercise and watching your diet.
Avatar f tn He gave me some reading material and we discussed the side effects. Many of the side effects were similar to that of the other meds that I had already been on. The main issue for me is that it has raised my sugar levels. So I have to watch what I eat more than what I did before. BUT, ..... It has been the only medicine that finally helped me! (There was a small timeframe that Abilify was added, but I no longer take it).
Avatar n tn because it apparently causes major cognitive side effects in a lot of people. And olanzapine is a huge weight gain causer in a lot of people. Maybe you should try a food and exercise diary to keep track of what you're eating and whether it changes. I think olanzapine (and other AAPs) can cause carb cravings, at least in some people. If you want more info on meds, google CrazyMeds.
Avatar f tn I have tried olanzapine before, and like ILADVOCATE, I also have a big problem with the side effect (weight gain). So if you are really very concern about your weight, my advice to you is that don't try olanzapine, I know the feeling of being over weight, it feels really terrible. You can discuss with your pdoc about Lamictal, the only side effect I have with Lamictal is that I can't take it at night, as I can't sleep so I take it in the morning, which helps alot.
Avatar m tn I have OCD, purely O, & OCD HIV oonly disease wise.
Avatar f tn I have been to see pdoc today after having a bit of a wobble following 2 months off medication (did not go cold turkey, did it over 3 months). She has prescribed me Zyprexa but I am really scared about taking it, I really don't want to gain weight - I am still trying to lose the weight I gained on Depakote.
628714 tn?1268238196 The most commonly reported side effects are sleepiness or excessive sleeping, dizziness, dry mouth and weight gain. Other side effects include akathisia (an inability to sit still), constipation, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension and tremors. The yawning you experience is also a rare side effect reported with Zyprexa. (Ref: http://bipolar.about.com/cs/zyprexa/a/meds_zyprexa.
Avatar n tn • the Tricyclic antidepressants such as Amitriptyline (Elavil), Imipramine (Tofranil), and Doxepin (Sinequan) • the Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as Tranylcypromine (Parnate), Isocarboxazid (Marplan) and Phenelzine (Nardil) • the Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Paroxetine (Paxil) • the atypical anti-depressants such as Mirtazapine (Remeron) and Trazodone.

Avatar f tn It is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and bi polar disorders. Its side effects are weight gain and somnolence (sleepiness). So, once withdrawn it is likely to cause insomnia. Don’t venture to discontinue your medications without consulting your doctor. Discuss your symptoms with your consulting doctor he may prescribe alternate medications. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn s drug metabolism is increased with fluvoxamine which could cause increased adverse effects regarding the olanzapine. Like you leg pain could be caused by extra restlessness caused by increased drug matabolism regarding the interaction with both drug or simple adverse reaction from olanzapine that can get worse by increased drug metabolism.
Avatar f tn Metformim is a medication used to control or prevent the onset of diabetes and/or regulate blood sugar and this is how it helps with these potential side effects of Zyprexa but you could discuss the specifics with your psychiatrist. What you describe are potential side effects of concern from Metformim so you should inform your psychiatrist.
1246883 tn?1285547973 Hi, welcome to the forum, seroquel is known to be associated with weight gain. There is significant weight gain is seen, in such cases usually other anti psychotics are prescribed. The weight gaining effect of this drug will not persist after discontinuation. Any associated condition should be looked for. If there is a change in voice (Voice becomes dusky), weight gain, intolerance to cold etc. You need to get your T3, t4 and TSH level checked as it may be in initial phase.
Avatar f tn I have just read that my medication can have weight gain associated with it. I am about 4 stone overweight. Will I still be able to lose weight whilst on this medication. I recently came off of Olanzapine because of the side effect.
Avatar m tn or depression due to bipolar, for me, Apathy and weight gain were the worst side effects of Oleanz and given a choice I never want to take it again. This time when I quit the Cough syrups, I went to a different doctor who gave me something for the depression and anxiety but no anti psychotics or anything. I feel that some chemical help when you quit is neccessary to cope with the mood swings.
1187071 tn?1279369698 It also makes me tired which I can handle that one but not the weight gain, I have had problems with my back in the past and when I put on weight my back hurts. I have nerve pain in my face and just pain in my face, what would be the other options I can talk to the dr about today? Would another pill from that line of pills be the same? I am going to talk to him about treatment of the other pain in my face if he don't want to then send me to a pain specialist that can treat all the pain.
Avatar f tn I didn't have any side effects except pregnancy, lol but some people may have them although not sure about the specific ones you asked about.
Avatar m tn I have been on Lexapro several times over the last 4 years for 6 months to 2 years at a time. I am having problems with the sexual side effects and the weight gain. It's actually less of a "weight gain" than a shift in body composition. My pants are too tight and my shirts are more fitted but I haven't actually gained a pound. I am a competitive runner and haven't changed my exercise or eating habits over the last 2 years.
1555914 tn?1296474056 Depending on how old you are it could just be a weight thing. Normally early 20s you gain weight and again in mid-40s where it becomes hard to lose the weight. (I'm too lazy to check your status to see if you have your age so those things may not apply).
Avatar f tn looks like it will be long term as I have had forty hard years with it all and would like twenty easier ones right about now..am concerned for the side effects of atypicals..would rather minimise risk as much as possible as I am very sensitive to all drugs...looking at buspirone only cos I know what hell a long term Valium regular use withdrawal can be.. But would consider it again if buspirone is considered ineffectual by most and benzos where I will find my peace. Thanks .
Avatar f tn aripripazole (abilify) and ziprasidone (geodon) are 2 other atypical antipsychotics like your olanzapine (zyprexa). nobody neither your pdoc can tell their effect on you, it's all trial and error everybody manifests different effect and side effect. he/she only prescribed them to you because they don't make you put on weight gain contrary to zyprexa, that's all.
