Normal blood sugar high ketones

Common Questions and Answers about Normal blood sugar high ketones

blood-sugar

Avatar f tn I would ask the doctor if they did any blood glucose tests. By looking at the lab papers, you may not know if they did this, for the paperwork would be in very technical language. If they did NOT do blood glucose tests, and if you do have abnormal thirst and fatigue, by all means specifically ask them to do a blood glucose test. Everything else can indeed be very normal but blood glucose levels be high, so if the other tests are normal it doesn't mean that you necessarily are not a diabetic.
Avatar n tn t have bouncing bgs? (high-normal, high-normal..) if a type 1 were trying to lose weight- and running normal blood sugars ketones wouldn't be dangerous? (I'm not trying to lose weight, just trying to understand this) thanks!
Avatar m tn Hi, ketone level of 1+ is not very high, though it is detectable. The fact that your blood sugar is totally normal at 83 means that the ketones you saw are from what is known as 'nutritional or metabolic ketosis'. This is not dangerous, in fact it is normal and a healthy response of the body to fasting, or to eating high fat low carb meals. When you fly be sure to drink plenty of water. Flying, with the dry air, is very dehydrating.
Avatar n tn My daughter has Type 1 diabetes. When blood sugar is too high, it can build ketones up in the blood which are potentially fatal if not treated. The way to get rid of these ketones is by lowering the blood sugar that caused them, AND by flushing them out via the urinary tract.
1388299 tn?1279740904 Ketones are chemicals that have a fruity smell and are excreted in the urine. They are produced when the body has to reduce the glucose level and insulin is not available in sufficient quantities to do so. The body has an "emergency" back-up which produces the tell-tale odor. You don't do anything to specifically "bring down ketones".
Avatar f tn I took her in and they tested her urine for sugar. Instead of finding any sugar, they found a high level of Ketones, which they claimed they should only see if she were sick and dehydrated. We've done blood tests, an MRI looking for Diabetes Insipidus, and are scheduled for a Nephrologist next month. My biggest concern (aside from the water intake) is the occasional Ketosis she's experiencing.
Avatar n tn I checked my urine for ketones at that time and it showed moderate to high amounts of ketones in my urine. This afternoon after I ate, my blood sugar was 521 and I checked for ketones again. On the second check, it was negative to a trace. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this to happen? From going high to moderate amounts to none at all? I often think I am experiencing some strange signs which are probably due to the high blood sugar and nothing else.
Avatar n tn It is possible to have ketones with low blood sugars. Ketones are caused by the lack of insulin, not high blood sugars. With your daughter being sick and vomiting, that can cause the numbers to drop so that you wouldn't have dosed insulin, and without getting food in her system to get the insulin needed, that would cause ketones. My recommendation would be to do whatever you can to get some carbs in her system so you can dose that insulin, as well as treat those ketones.
Avatar n tn diabetics should have blood sugar between 70-100 closer to 80-90. either she isn't taking her medication correctly or she is cheating by eating candy or something else sugary. is she young? i know its hard for a lot of kids to stay on their insulin and eating correctly. if she can't get it under control talk to her endocrinologist. its important she be honest about what she's eating.
Avatar n tn You need to continue to keep an eye out for ketones, even when your blood sugar may not seem high to you. Stress hormones that are designed to deal with short term danger stay turned on for a long time after surgery. Ketones can show up even because you have not been eating for a period of time. So, I hope that I've provided you with some explanation for why ketones are hanging in there for you.
Avatar n tn I am unsure about what I have, but I can tell you that when I tested my blood sugar, after fasting (14 hours), it was about 124, but then I realized the test strips were expired. I went to the doctor and the found a high amount of protein in my urine, and also ketones, but no sugar in. (I was tested about two hours after a large meal too, so the ketones were not out of starvation, and I do not exercise.) They have always seen protein in my urine also.
Avatar n tn If your fasting (no food OR drink at least 8 or preferably 12 hours before testing) glucose was 126, that is above the expected range. The sugar has to get pretty high before it shows in the urine, so not finding sugar in the urine does not mean there isn't a problem, just that it isn't extremely high. Do you have symptoms of excessive thirst or urination, or periods of lethargy? But again, those would more likely come with higher levels.

Avatar n tn Agitation / Irritation / Aggression / Confusion Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication in patients with untreated diabetes mellitus (chronic high blood sugar or hyperglycemia). Near complete deficiency of insulin and elevated levels of certain stress hormones combine to cause DKA.
Avatar n tn although we have all been told that exercise (physical activity) can lower the blood sugar, if a diabetic has high blood sugar and then exercises, the blood sugar can actually go higher. It is most likely an individual thing. If my son's BG is 350 or higher, I do not allow him to exercise (ride his bike, run around, whatever) until his BG goes down. Also, he always tests for ketones if his BG is above 250.
Avatar n tn It is so easy to not react to a high blood sugar if it is followed by normal ones but there is a reason for the highs. Insulin levels have to be corrected weekly to take care of this. I am so sorry for your son, there is help though. Call your doctor with blood sugars every week and make the necessary changes. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn This is the presence of high levels of keytones simultaneous with high blood sugar levels. It reflects that the body is burning its own fat (regardless of how many carbs are eaten) because insulin is not able to work. This can be life threatening. A low carb diet can be very effective in controlling blood sugars. The more extreme carb restriction is recommended by Dr. Richard Bernstein (Diabetes Solutions) of 35 g of carbs per day.
Avatar m tn But when my blood was tested abit later my glucose was normal. Im not overweight at all, I dont eat that much but i do have another autoimmune disease. Anyway I checked my BGluose with meter yesturday, it was after eating but I hadn't eaten much because i cooked some meat and then it was off so all I had was a couple of small potatoes and a bit of salad, and my reading was 7.4. I dont normally check it, but its never been that high before. I know its not that high, but should I be worried?
Avatar n tn I hope your mother is well on her way to recovery. High blood sugar can be controlled with diabetes medications and pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics. The presence of ketones in the bloodstream is a common complication of diabetes. A urine test for ketones is more commonly done than the blood test. If there are 2 positive signs (++), this indicates the level of ketones present in her urine, which is normally negative. It is important that this is treated also to prevent ketoacidosis.
Avatar n tn Recent labs show high protein at 70 mg and presence of ketones. Normal glucose. Eat balanced diet. Low neutrophils, high lymphocytes. Night sweats periodically. Mild skin breakouts. Lupus? myeloma? Diabetes?
Avatar f tn Kids can have high blood sugars when sick, and these can then return to normal... however, the very fact that she had high sugars is not normal... and she may be at risk of type 1 developing soon. Please do check her sugars after a heavy meal and see how she is going. Kids can go from apparently fine, to very ill, very quickly in type 1. Hope that your daughter doesn't have type 1, but the best you can do is watch closely and catch it early if it does develop.
