Avatar f tn I just received a call from the OB/GYN nurse that said the doctor wants to put me on 750mg of Metformin because my (I think) blood glucose levels was too high. I asked her what was the normal range and she said 0.0 - 24 and mine was a 27.8. What does that mean? She also said that my Vitamin D levels was low and that I needed to take a supplement that contains 5,000IU's daily in it. I was pretty much left like that. Not a whole lot of explanation or nothing!
Avatar n tn When you say, "I know that normal blood insulin levels should be 1-5 fasting", from what country? In the USA, normal blood insulin levels is 5-20 mcU/mL while fasting. Blood sugar (glucose) on the other hand is measure differently. Normally, the blood glucose level is maintained between about 4 and 8 mmol/L (70 to 150 mg/dL). The total amount of glucose in the circulating blood is therefore about 3.3 to 7g (assuming an ordinary adult blood volume of 5 liters).
Avatar n tn I agree with the previous posting. Normal pre-meal blood sugar levels should be between 70-146, according to most articles I have read. However, even healthy people can find that blood sugar levels rise above this occasionally if they eat high-glucose foods. In your case, the high reading COULD (mere speculation here) be due to having the hypoglycemic episode before you ate the candy bar.

Avatar n tn (Generally in the morning after not consuming anything except small amounts of water for at least 8 hours). Ideally a fasting blood glucose would be under 100-110 (for most USA labs and the units/measurements they use, though individual labs sometimes use different standards), though the "official" diagnosis of diabetes comes about if the result is over 126. (and again, that is for FASTING for at least 8 hours).

You also didn't tell us where you're from so I'm posting both measurement values - USA is mg/dl, Europe mmol/l. First thing in morning before breakfast is called preprandial. Normal levels are 60/70 to 99 mg/dl, or 3.33/3.88 to 5.5 mmol/l Prediabetes levels are 100 to 125 mg/dl, or 5.55 to 6.94 mmol/l Above the above is considered diabetes.

Avatar n tn Hello! I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. The normal blood glucose ranges for anyone, child or not are between 80 and 120. Some doctors will say 70-110, but it's all in the same range. Now, that's the target, but depending on what is eaten for example, a healthy person's blood glucose can rise temporarily up close to 200. As long as the values return to normal after a couple hours, all is well.

Avatar n tn I meant that once the caloric intake is reduced and the body adjusts, that over a short period of time, the blood glucose levels would probably drop to within normal levels, assuming the individual is otherwise healthy and has normally functioning organs. Fasting glucose is normal if under 100) my insulin level was 151!!! Ideally fasting insulin should be no higher than 10, but my doctor considers anything under 20 good. Avatar n tn Well, the fact that the first poster's husband did a comparison test and his number was normal at 86 would seem to indicate that the machine is NOT giving false numbers. Her blood sugar probably really IS that high, and this is extremely dangerous -- could be life-threatening. It really is imperative that she have a true lab test done to see if there really is a blood sugar problem.

After meals, it is normal for glucose levels to rise above this, and the numbers quoted as 'normal' vary, depending on which doctor you talk to. I have read that a number of about 140-150 is considered healthy for after-meal sugar levels.
