Avatar f tn Hi, Well i must say that God was really watching over you. It's a miracle that you have returned to normal state after having such a high level of ammonia. In India, we have never seen anyone alive after such a high level. I can just say that, the medical care you received was EXCELLENT! How are you doing now? All the best.
Avatar m tn Since then I had my first experience with a high ammonia level of 98 in 2014 which put me in the hospital, almost in a coma state, for 5 days. Lactulose, Lasix & Spirolactone were given. After being released, it took a week when I returned to the hospital, now I was put on Xifaxan along with the other three meds. All has been well until Feb. 14, 2016 when it hit me again, ammonia level of 250, survived.

Avatar f tn My ammonia level was 902 last week and my liver enzymes were quadruple normal as was my GGT. I have stopped drinking some time ago. My bilirubin was normal yet I have typical liver failure symptoms such as GI problems, upper right quadrant pain, sleeplessness, etc. Is there a way to reverse this? Drinking alcohol is not an issue at all any longer. I would appreciate your help. Thanks.
Avatar n tn My husband's ammonia level is @ 68; 2 weeks ago was @ 60. He is currently taking Lactulose 15 ml twice a day; 2 weeks ago he was lethargic, confused and had extremely poor coordination, was diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy. He has dramatically improved but his ammonia level continues to rise. He was advised to increase the lactulose to 30 ml twice a day for 5 days and then resume back to 15 ml twice a day. Is there any other medication for elevated ammonia?
190885 tn?1333025891 Take enough lactulose to have 3-4 bowel movements per day and your ammonia level will drop and you will feel better. Normal is 15-60 mcg/dL. It usually that a day or a couple of days for the ammonia levels to drop. I am not sure of your health status. High ammonia levels can also be caused by... *Reye syndrome. *Heart failure. *Kidney failure. *Severe bleeding from the stomach or intestines. Good luck!
5611452 tn?1370971104 Shelley, the lactulose is really essential for managing your digestive tract and minimizing the build up of ammonia and other toxins. The higher the ammonia level, the more severe the HE, and the more severe the HE, the more difficult it will be for you and your liver doc to manage your liver disease. You have to control the HE, so that you can manage your meds, your diet, and other aspects of your liver care. Please don't skip your lactulose.
Avatar f tn Anyone have elevated ammonia levels? Are you having any symptoms and at what level did your symptoms start? I just had my first ammonia screening done and the level came back 119, with less than 47 being the reference range. I'm not having any symptoms. This seems to be the story of my life. All of my labs are going whacky and I'm still feeling fine. I'm afraid one of these days it's all going to hit and I'll be a mess.

You may not be drinking enough water. Then again, it could be the onsight of a urinary, bladder, or kidney infection. Consult your physician on your individual case.
Avatar f tn she has continued to take the Lactolose for the past two weeks but today her ammonia level is 150. I would like to find out how high ammonia level can go before it is considered toxic and will cause her to go into a coma? I am also wondering in end stage cirrhosis will the lactolose eventually be uneffective in bringing down the ammonia levels? My final question is what kind of life expectancy is there when the cirrohsis remains at that level?
Avatar m tn I have 57 ammonia level in July and in August 97 ammonia level. Took Lactulose and two weeks later had 101 and added the antibiotic effixir (sp) just last week. Will this be chronis? 1481758 tn?1287638643 An increase in blood ammonia is a possible advancement of liver disease. The impaired liver function shunts (re-routes) of blood around the liver. If there are symptoms such as neurologic symptoms, then treatment can be discussed - including limiting protein intake as well as a medication called lactulose. If the liver has been ruled out, an increase level of ammonia may also be seen with: "Gastrointestinal bleeding - blood cells are hemolyzed in the intestines, releasing protein.

1008841 tn?1293598960 The blood test for ammonia is AFP or alpha fet protein test. It measures the level of ammonia in your blood. When it is high it is not much fun. The explaination in Hector SF's post is so accurate. The first indication for me that it is high is that my hands shake and I can't write and it's hard to hold fork or spoon. I also get confused easily and can't sort things out. Sometimes I think I'm okay - until I get it in control again and look back.
Avatar f tn He was admitted Monday night with severe confusion. His ammonia level was 152 and WBC/RBC and hemaglobin were extremely low. Treatment was started immediately to lower the ammonia level. Wednesday was 149, yesterday was 230 and today was 190. The doctor said it isn't responding to treatment, although the medicine definitely is keeping him cleaned out. They gave him platelets last night, but the level dropped even lower today.
