Normal ammonia level

Common Questions and Answers about Normal ammonia level

ammonia

1008841 tn?1293602560 It measures the level of ammonia in your blood. When it is high it is not much fun. The explaination in Hector SF's post is so accurate. The first indication for me that it is high is that my hands shake and I can't write and it's hard to hold fork or spoon. I also get confused easily and can't sort things out. Sometimes I think I'm okay - until I get it in control again and look back. Lactulose has been part of my regime for quite awhile and I know when I need to up the dose.
Avatar n tn I thought she had a stroke but the doctors are saying it is because her ammonia level in her liver is 178. It comes down but goes back up and she is not getting any better. She has been seen by GI, Neroligist, Cancer doctors and noone can tell me what is happening. She has been tested for hepatis and it was negative. Can you give any advice?
Avatar n tn My ammonia level came back today abnormal at 70. My neuro ordered a long list of blood tests and this was the only one that came back positive. Only noticeable symptom right now is muscle aches and arthritic type pain. All new. Muscle enzyme test was normal. No known liver issues. Uric acid normal though high one blood-test a couple of months ago. After drinking water on retest was normal. I'm being treated for possible Lyme disease.
14166303 tn?1433285761 All my other blood tests are in range, but sometimes my hands have a slight tremor. Please, can anyone tell me if this is a dangerously high level of ammonia in my blood, i.e., liver or kidney damaging?
Avatar n tn So any problems in this part of the digestive system can result in higher than normal ammonia level. For example; In patients with advanced cirrhosis, the liver is no longer able to metabolize the ammonia and convert it to urea so the ammonia builds up the in body producing and travels to the person's brain with psychological and other effects. If you have advanced liver disease you blood levels for bilirubin, creatinine, and INR should be abnormal.
Avatar n tn For the past 2 summers my husband smells of ammonia when he sweats. We went to our regular dr. who after blood tests told us his ammonia level was 51. A repeated test a month later his ammonia level is 32. They did an ultra sound on his liver, galbladded & ducts which all looked normal. Should we seek an opinion from an expert in determining if there is something to be concerned about? He is not a body builder and does not eat excessive amounts of protein.
Avatar f tn Hi, Well i must say that God was really watching over you. It's a miracle that you have returned to normal state after having such a high level of ammonia. In India, we have never seen anyone alive after such a high level. I can just say that, the medical care you received was EXCELLENT! How are you doing now? All the best.
1391441 tn?1333851561 visit and was checked for ammonia level - @127. Prescription for lactulose @30 ml twice a day. Dr. said it would not affect blood sugar but I have found that 30-45 min. after taking it my blood sugar drops dramatically - 30 pts. Has anyone else experienced this and what alternatives are there to the lactulose treatment?
5611452 tn?1370974704 Shelley, the lactulose is really essential for managing your digestive tract and minimizing the build up of ammonia and other toxins. The higher the ammonia level, the more severe the HE, and the more severe the HE, the more difficult it will be for you and your liver doc to manage your liver disease. You have to control the HE, so that you can manage your meds, your diet, and other aspects of your liver care. Please don't skip your lactulose.
Avatar n tn Also sorry tht I can't answer your question about the ammonia level. My husband has ESLD and we still don't know what a 'normal' ammonia level is. Take care.
Avatar n tn My husband's ammonia level is @ 68; 2 weeks ago was @ 60. He is currently taking Lactulose 15 ml twice a day; 2 weeks ago he was lethargic, confused and had extremely poor coordination, was diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy. He has dramatically improved but his ammonia level continues to rise. He was advised to increase the lactulose to 30 ml twice a day for 5 days and then resume back to 15 ml twice a day. Is there any other medication for elevated ammonia?
Avatar f tn My mother recently had TIPS procedure due bleeding from portal hypertension, alcoholic liver disease. She did fine through the procedure, but now her ammonia level is 68 and she is a little symptomatic. She was started on Lactulose 2 days ago and her last ammonia level showed an increase instead of decrease. What would cause this? Is it normal for it to rise before it goes down? She is having 3+ BM's daily so the medicine is doing its part.
Avatar n tn More important than the absolute number is the reason for the elevation and the speed of the elevation. A slow rise in ammonia level will have lower toxicity for a given level than a rapidly rising level. Since this is the addiction forum, I presume we are talking about a case of liver failure (?). Liver metabolizes ammonia and during liver failure, the ammonia level is one of the things that leads to coma and eventually death.
Avatar n tn We know know they have found a small, very small lung cancer..and her calcium levels have returned to normal with IV medications. But her ammonia level is 104..dangerously high. She is bloated and they are biopsing her liver now. We fear liver cancer. She is almost in a coma now. Help me with some insight here. This is my best friend and the thought of someone who worked one day and the next day fell this seriously ill..near death is unreal.
Avatar m tn We are using high doses a Vitamin C to help flush the brain of the ammonia. The blood levels came back into normal range with in 36 hours but the cause is undetermined.
Avatar m tn I have 57 ammonia level in July and in August 97 ammonia level. Took Lactulose and two weeks later had 101 and added the antibiotic effixir (sp) just last week. Will this be chronis? Is there hope to get it down and keep it down? The test showed a slightly enlarged liver. Could this be caused from spreading fertilizer, coloring my hair and spraying poision? I cut out the protein except for fish, eggs and a few other things. Driking lots more water to flush my system. Any other suggestions.
Avatar n tn In one week my ammonia level has gone from 68 to 93. Only numbers off on liver function on 10/29 were ALT @ 61 (5 high). ALT on 10/21 test was 53. I've read all I can find on this but nowhere have I found anything mentioning high ammonia levels and "normal" liver functions. I'm having many symptoms associated with high ammonia. Last 2 months I've had a major problem with abdomen distentia. Abdomen and pelvis CT was performed on 10/30...
Avatar n tn My husband's ammonia level is at 128...as a result of his HepC he has Class IV cirrhosis. They tell him his liver is too far gone and he's too high a risk for treatment. He's been "maintaining" for the past two years. He watches his diet and takes milk thisle. He's also a type II diabetic and since they've put him on Enulose for two weeks, the boy guy spends all his time in the bathroom...anyway my question is this...is 128 dangerously high?
Avatar m tn Do you have cirrhosis? Elevated serum ammonia in cirrhotics is a product of protein metabolism, I believe. You can probably expect the doctor to prescribe Lactulose; this is a non-absorbable sugar that will cause increased transit time (laxative) and can help reduce ammonia levels. They might also Rx Rifaximin, an antibiotic to help too. Are you experiencing confusion or trouble with concentration? What prompted the doctor to order the test?
Avatar n tn Question...There are some unusual circumstances in which someone can have an elevated ammonia and a normal liver. What are they?
Avatar f tn She tested it and basically it was just a high pH (very alkaline) so I drink apple cider vinegar occasionally to keep my urine pH at a normal level. She wasn't worried in my situation at all... I was just more grossed out than anything. So, just ask your doc/midwife to check your urine.
Avatar f tn Ahhh, didn't know the varices and elevated ammonia went hand in hand. I'm a stage 3-4, genotype 1a. So did you have any problem with the treatment because of the varices? Any bleeding at all? I'm still having a problem getting a handle on all of this. We're figuring I could have had this since about 1969 when I had blood transfusions following a car accident and this is the first time any of my labs have been other than normal. No signs of this at all.
Avatar f tn I have no idea as to what extent these factors may have influenced your ammonia level. While elevated ammonia levels are seen in cirrhotic patients there can be encephalopathy with normal ammonia levels and there can also be no mental impairment in some patients with elevated ammonia levels. Basically, ammonia levels are of limited use for diagnosing cirrhosis or hepatic impairment.
Avatar n tn But I thought I was tired and confused and forgot alot of thingswhen I was on treatment but, that does not compair to how the high ammonia level makes you feel. The comment the other member made about the protein is so very true and it's a big problem in your ammonia level getting high.I'm sure you know this but keep a close eye on it my doctors in Tulane told me people can go into a coma.So from now on when all I want to do is sleep I have my lab work done.
Avatar n tn I am not on any treatment as of yet for this due to lack of insurance. But how high does your ammonia level have to be before seeing coma? Just curious. Thanks for you time. Kendall Dear Kendall: Thanks for you questions. I can imagine just how concerned you are by your situation. I understand you ammonia is elevated and you are having symptoms of confusion and forgetfulness.
Avatar m tn So any problems in this part of the digestive system can result in higher than normal ammonia level. 1654058 tn?1407162666 " I entered hospital last week w a 14. Leaving w 53 and they gave me an RX for lactulose." 14, 53 for what values? Ammonia should be listed under ammonia on blood test result. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is common for GI bleeding to exacerbate hepatic encephalopathy.
1475202 tn?1536274577 Which is why patients with overt HE are advised to avoid red meats which during digestion create a lot of ammonia. Other sources of serum ammonia are the kidneys and skeletal muscle. Normally, ammonia is metabolized by the liver. When the liver function is impaired, shunting of blood around the liver, and increased muscle wasting all lead to increased serum ammonia levels in cirrhotic patients. But ammonia isn't the only toxin involved in HE.
Avatar n tn Managed to get things under control with meds and better diet, to the point where I've been living an essentially normal life since about 2003. Lately, I've started retaining more fluids and latest ammonia check had it at 82. Wife says I'm thinking slower, so encephalopathic symptoms are showing. About six months ago I started a fairly vigorous exercise routine. I need to be able to pass some strict physical tests for my employment, so I've been preparing.
