Common Questions and Answers about Niacin vs nicotinic acid

niaspan

Avatar m tn Mechanism of Injury The mechanism of hepatotoxicity is assumed to be an intrinsic toxic reaction related to high serum levels of niacin that overwhelm the high affinity, low concentration nicotinic acid receptors (that are responsible for the flushing response). The finding that niacin can be restarted at lower doses after an episode of clinically apparent injury indicates that the hepatic damage is unlikely to be idiosyncratic or due to hypersensitivity.
Avatar n tn Vitamin B3 is actually nicotinic acid. Your likely hooked on Nicotine. Most are not aware of this fact smokers do not inhale nicotine directly, they burn it first creating the purest most effective form of Vitamin B3 [niacin] known. Although the medical community is currently selling the marvels of overpriced smoking patches which are almost completely ineffective in reducing the cravings smokers feel when trying to quit.
Avatar n tn Just a note. The Real Niacin is nicotinic acid or Vitamin B3. Because it causes "Flushing" you need to build up a tolerance for it slowly. This is the only one that raises HDL. I have insurance, so I take the Niaspan, which is a time release nicotinic acid. The "No Flush" Niacins are a different formula (Inositol Hexanicotinate) and don't have an effect on HDL. Here is an article on it: http://health.yahoo.
Avatar n tn com/viewarticle/458867_4 Regarding the issue of niacin lowering the cholesterol levels, Niacin or nicotinic acid lowers low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while raising the high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels(good cholesterol). But this medication is not recommended to be taken by your own because you may miss some important side effects. Side effects include flushing, stomach upset, vomitings, headache, dizziness, liver damage in some cases.
Avatar m tn A few examples of the different chelators are chromium citrate (chromium plus citric acid), chromium picolinate (chromium with picolinic acid), or chromium polynicotinate (chromium with nicotinate). If you find Chromium listed as an ingredient it will always be Chromium plus one of the various chelating agents, and not just chromium by itself. As far as labels go, 'Chromium Polynicotinate' = 'Chromium'.
1135275 tn?1586565652 Niacin (Nicotinic Acid) (B-3) helps release energy from carbohydrates. When taken in very high doses, it can help improve cholesterol levels, lowering LDL cholesterol, raising HDL cholesterol, and lowering elevated triglycerides.
Avatar n tn m in my early twenties and workout, a couple months ago I took a vasodilator supplement which later I found contained nicotinic acid(essentially niacin I think) in a high dose. I felt what it's called a niacin flush, tingling and warm feeling all over.. I did my workout and after went to take a shower, that's when I noticed a big red patch in my left foot and two small ones on my right foot.
1817071 tn?1366228243 s idea of increasing it was wise however perhaps a better method would be to use Niacin (Vitamin B3 nicotinic acid) as this can remove LDL by boosting HDL cholesterol. Again as this is a material found naturally in the blood he may not be able to prescribe it.
1765695 tn?1313669583 Patients in the study were given 1,500 to 2,000 mg per day of extended-release nicotinic acid as Niaspan, a prescription drug. The study was stopped early when there was no improvement in outcomes after 32 months of treatment and a small increase in ischemic stroke was noted among those taking Niaspan compared to those taking placebo.
Avatar m tn I found this interesting podcast from Chris Kresser - RHR: How Your Lipoprotein(a) Level Affects Your Risk of Heart Disease. So from that info find a good quality fish oil. I believe Krill Oil is even better but it's more expensive. There is also niacin (look for non flush niacin) and L-carnitine. And of course look at your diet. You can check out what to eat and avoid on this article from Authority Nutrition: A Paleo Diet Meal Plan and Menu That Can Save Your Life.
Avatar m tn 54% Canned tuna is the best source of niacin, and it’s packed with docosahexaenoic acid, a type of omega-3 that stunts the growth of belly fat cell. Canned chunk tuna is considered a “low mercury fish” enjoy two to three times a week, according to the FDA’s most recent guidelines. I don't trust the FDA! 2x per week is OK for me.
1495437 tn?1288798915 I am a 32 year old female that took 3 Niacin supplement pills in 1996. I was told that they would de-toxify my body, and is very healthy for me. I took the pills before bed one night, and was lying there feeling an intense burning all over my body, my esophagus was on fire, I stood up unable to breathe, and gasped for air, feeling light headed, I went to the landing on our staircase trying to get downstairs, that was the last thing I remember.
Avatar n tn 3) Response to over-the-counter supplements vary from person to person, so the effect of niacin vs. fish oil on your triglyceride level is unknown. 4) There is some evidence that coenzyme Q10 may help with statin-induced muscle pain, but there is not any well-documented studies to support its use.
Avatar n tn Background: I have engaged a Niacin regimen to cut cholesterol (vs. using statin drugs) because Niacin also raises HDL and cuts LPa and triglycerides (while statins only cut LDL). I have been on this regimen since 2003 and the effect on my cholesterol/triglycerides and LPa has been more than as hoped for. Just as with statin drugs, it is necessary to get regular blood tests (ideally every 6 months) to ensure there is no liver damage.
Avatar m tn I stopped taking statins because of serious side effects and found in books on nutrition that 500mg of vitamin c and nuts as they contain niacin which reduces cholesterol naturally.
Avatar f tn Many diabetic clinics provide such testing for free. You might try some alpha-lipoic acid, 1000 mg of omega-3 fish oil, and some slow release niacin. The niacin improves the microcirculation, as does the omega-3 fish oil. If you are paying cash and specify you only want an hba1c and a fasting glucose test it shouldn't be very expensive. To evaluate the thyroid a test known as a TSH is required. This is also inexpensive.
Avatar m tn Low triglycerides with normal or high cholesterol can be due to poor eating habits, hyperthyroidism, malabsorption syndromes (including Crohn’s and most likely cause in your case), as a side effect of certain drugs (like nicotinic acid, clofibrate), etc. Yes, cancers to can lower the triglycerides and so can AIDS, chronic panceatitis, chronic liver disease, post radiation side effect and protein intolerance.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately most drugs for cholesteral like Lipitor and the other, are considered statins, and most statins are not good for the liver. If your cholesteral is still high, niacin is a natural supplement that will also reduce your cholesteral numbers.
Avatar m tn t have enough self control to lose any weight. I had muscle pain and memory loss with statins, flushing and finally facial swelling with niacin supplements. The memory loss was so bad, I sold my veterinary practice and retired BEFORE the lawsuit. I ran for exercise until I wore out my left knee, now I walk. Again, these labs are before any medication.
