Avatar m tn By contrast, slow-release niacin preparations reduce the hot-flush effect by releasing niacin over an extended period of 12 hours or longer. Most of these preparations are unsafe and I do not recommend them. “No-flush” niacin preparations, such as inositol hexaniacinate and nicotinamide, are widely sold as niacin alternatives that do not cause hot flushes. In my experience, however, they simply do not work. In other words, no flush, no effect.
600301 tn?1219689156 Exercise, Niacin, Fibrates ( such as gemfibrozil) and some statins can all raise HDL. Alcohol consumption in moderation can also do this. Whereas there is a strong link between low HDL and risk for cardiac death and heart attacks, there is very little evidence that increasing it with drugs ( appart from gemfibrozil and Niacin) actually improves patient's mortality.

Avatar n tn I just received the results of the Berkley Heart Profile. My father died of CAD at the age of 46. My mother had a coronary artery blockage that was repaired at age 75. I'm a 54 yr. old healthy female non smoker, low BP, 5'5''/128 lb.and live a healthy lifestyle (exercise and diet). My Lp(a) was 114, very high and a fibrinogen of 475. I also see that the LDL particles are primarily large. I plan on a stress test and obtaining a good cardiologist.

Avatar m tn valve replacement 2001, redid bypasses. I was on 40mg Lipitor and 500mg no-flush niacin for a number of years with moderate sucess. I subscribe to the Cleveland Clinic Heart Newsletter. In the July 2007 issue there was suggestion that 1,500mg niacin was a good statin supplement. Starting in July 2007 I followed this suggestion, taking 1,500mg slow-release niacin with the Lipitor. Avatar n tn The urine cortisol tests in that range are not specific and more testing including dexamethosone suppression testing is necessary. The slight elevations may be due to weight and stress. Also ask about sleep apnea. Most of the symptoms and medical problems you mentioned boil down to weight -- despite your previous efforts to lose weight.
Avatar f tn After reading the Wiki article about Pellagra it also says Niacin treats it. The photo on the Wiki article is way more extreme than what my sons skin looks like. There is no itching pain or peeling. Do you think adding Niacin in his diet would somehow help. He gets plenty of Trytophan, turkey sandwiches are usually his after dinner snack.
Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. 691724 tn?1230682644 My husband uses those little bottles of 5-HOUR ENERGY drinks. I read the label and it has extremely high amounts of Niacin and B12. Also what happens to the body when high doses of B vitamins are ingested like this?

Avatar m tn I talked to the guy last night for about an hour and he said he was comfortable with it beig unprotected because he knew he was definitely clean and then got tested again after our exposure. He had blood tests done. The ER doctors swabbed, took blood, and urine. He told me it the scratch I had looked absolutely nothing like herpes and he couldn't even culture it he said. Avatar f tn Thanks for your prompt reply. I take 50 mg. Trrazodone, for sleep. My only other medication is Maxzide. I am not intentionally taking a lot of niacin. My multi-vitamin lists 20 mg. As far as I know my diat does not include an unusually high amount of niacin. I do eat bran cereal and drink about 4 8-oz. glasses of milk a day.
