691724 tn?1230682644 My husband uses those little bottles of 5-HOUR ENERGY drinks. I read the label and it has extremely high amounts of Niacin and B12. I know certain vitamins are stored in the body while others aren't. Are these B vitamin doses safe on a regular basis? Also what happens to the body when high doses of B vitamins are ingested like this?
Avatar m tn My symptoms started a few days after I started taking a new multivitamin that has 5 times as much of the daily requirement of Niacin (B3). When I googled the symptoms of Niacin overdose, low and behold, I had three of the five.......itchy, dizziness, constipation. I am thrilled to be able to get a full night's sleep again. I decided to post my experience in hopes that it may help someone else.
8793709 tn?1409594060 Hi ladies, i'm currently taking 3 different supplements (1) pregnacare, a pregnancy tablet that most women in UK take, (2) Calcium Sandoz, a calcium efervescent that my doc in Switzerland prescribed because Pregnacare doesnt contain calcium, and (3) Balance PL, a protein powder that my doc here in India prescribed to mix with a glass of milk twice a day (she knows about the other two supplements i take).
Avatar n tn I could not find anyone else who had had a mania symptoms with niacin. However, it was clearly what I was having. My daughter was hospitalized with mania on Wed. (2 days ago) and I am starting to wonder if her situation was aggravated by the 500 mg of niacin she has been taking over the last 2 weeks or helped. She is now on Olanzapine (50 mg) at bedtime until she gets a consult with an outpatient urgent care. DOES NIACIN CAUSE MANIA?
Avatar n tn m not a typical case, but have you ever heard of someone, after taking a lot of niacin for many years, suddenly developing a persistent rash with other symptoms like mine?
Avatar f tn How much Niacin were you taking daily? Was your physician aware you were going to take the Niacin to lower your cholesterol? Were you taking any other medications at the same time?
1495437 tn?1288798915 I am a 32 year old female that took 3 Niacin supplement pills in 1996. I was told that they would de-toxify my body, and is very healthy for me. I took the pills before bed one night, and was lying there feeling an intense burning all over my body, my esophagus was on fire, I stood up unable to breathe, and gasped for air, feeling light headed, I went to the landing on our staircase trying to get downstairs, that was the last thing I remember.
Avatar n tn I tried Benadryl, and my doctor put me on Medrol dosepack, but still kept me on the Niacin. Even though the Niacin was discontinued weeks ago, I still have some of the same problems. Tests for allergy to peanuts and shellfish were negative. I ate a few shrimp yesterday and exercised, and woke up today with hives that are itching; I feel fatigued and my skin feels uncomfortable. Could the Niacin I took still be causing this or did the Niacin trigger something in my body?
Avatar f tn Anyone tried niacin B3 therapy, or know of any success stories with natural treatments for schizo-affective disorder?
Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took 500 mg a day of Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw came up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Avatar m tn actually, this morning he is acting normal again, after 9 days. I started him on Niacin(B1) yesterday, and he is better. I guess Niacin is depleted during severe alcohol use, and it is important for brain function. He received injections of it in re-hab. he switched over to drinking massive amounts of soda when he got out, and that can deplete it too.
Avatar f tn ve been taking 250 mg of Niacin. Based on the previous TSH told me to decrease to 150. The last dosage said to decrease to 125 mcg. Is this weird?
718651 tn?1237042917 I was thinking today of if taking niacin would make the opiate come out of your system faster... i've heard of people taking higher doses to get drugs out of their system to pass a UA.. has anyone tried this?? or do you think it will work??
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.

Avatar n tn , Symptom onset is usually rapid, often occurring within minutes after self-poisoning or a change in medication. Serotonin syndrome encompasses a wide range of clinical findings. Avatar f tn Well I just flipped out. I read niacin is helpfully with pain pill withdrawals so I got some.
Avatar m tn By contrast, slow-release niacin preparations reduce the hot-flush effect by releasing niacin over an extended period of 12 hours or longer. Most of these preparations are unsafe and I do not recommend them. “No-flush” niacin preparations, such as inositol hexaniacinate and nicotinamide, are widely sold as niacin alternatives that do not cause hot flushes. In my experience, however, they simply do not work. In other words, no flush, no effect.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have recently heard that Niacin is good for lowering cholesterol. Anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar m tn I figured I was getting too much B-Vitamins, but people say those are good for you..and you can overdose....Well, in the B-vitamin I had, I was getting over 3,000 percent of some B-vitamins, and the pill had thiamin, and niacin, and other nuerological minerals needed for the body, but I was getting too much. On top of that, if my body didn't feel good...or felt excessively tired, I took my typical vitamin....just because I thought, since I have EBV I really need to make up for it.
1063764 tn?1272821064 I was watching a documentary and heard about a case where a woman was put on niacin supplements for depression. She was taking very large dosages, but it completely pulled her out of her depression. So far fluoxetine has helped me, but I think in time I will need a larger dosage. I would really rather not do that, so my question is: is it safe to take niacin supplements of 100 mg daily plus an extra multivitamin with 20mg. I don't want to end up taking too many vitamins.
