691724 tn?1230682644 My husband uses those little bottles of 5-HOUR ENERGY drinks. I read the label and it has extremely high amounts of Niacin and B12. I know certain vitamins are stored in the body while others aren't. Are these B vitamin doses safe on a regular basis? Also what happens to the body when high doses of B vitamins are ingested like this?
Avatar n tn Hello, You are right in saying that statins may cause memory loss. Statin drugs cause terrible side effects for some users, including mental confusion, memory loss and a general loss of mental focus. The cardiovascular benefits of statins are well established, but the effects of these agents on the human brain are not as well established. The more lipid-soluble the statin, the greater propensity it has to cross the blood-brain barrier and affect the central nervous system.
Avatar m tn By contrast, slow-release niacin preparations reduce the hot-flush effect by releasing niacin over an extended period of 12 hours or longer. Most of these preparations are unsafe and I do not recommend them. “No-flush” niacin preparations, such as inositol hexaniacinate and nicotinamide, are widely sold as niacin alternatives that do not cause hot flushes. In my experience, however, they simply do not work. In other words, no flush, no effect.
Avatar n tn I just realized that I have been taking three 300mg tablets of WellbutrinXL and I haven't felt any of its effects. No jitteriness, and more importantly, no seizures. What does this say about how good WellbutrinXL is for me? I felt the same way taking 900 mg as I did taking 450 mg. I did call my doctor who told me to take 150 mg today and resume the 450mg (my regular dose) tomorrow. Any thoughts? Thank you.
Avatar f tn I've read conflicting articles saying that niacin is necessary for thyroid function and then some that say it can lower thyroid levels and cause liver damage. I've seen it in some iron supplements and wondered if I needed to stay away from it or if it would be good to take.

Avatar m tn Did you try the Niacin with aspirin to reduce side effects taken at bedtime? Niacin can do wonders on the LDL especially when there may be a corkscrew like protein attached to it and no amount of statin, diet or lifestyle change will impact the LDL but Niacin will. It is referred to as LPa and can be done in some advanced lipid testing. That alone may change and further define what you need to be on.
Avatar m tn My symptoms started a few days after I started taking a new multivitamin that has 5 times as much of the daily requirement of Niacin (B3). When I googled the symptoms of Niacin overdose, low and behold, I had three of the five.......itchy, dizziness, constipation. I am thrilled to be able to get a full night's sleep again. I decided to post my experience in hopes that it may help someone else.
8793709 tn?1409594060 Hi ladies, i'm currently taking 3 different supplements (1) pregnacare, a pregnancy tablet that most women in UK take, (2) Calcium Sandoz, a calcium efervescent that my doc in Switzerland prescribed because Pregnacare doesnt contain calcium, and (3) Balance PL, a protein powder that my doc here in India prescribed to mix with a glass of milk twice a day (she knows about the other two supplements i take).
1063764 tn?1272821064 I was watching a documentary and heard about a case where a woman was put on niacin supplements for depression. She was taking very large dosages, but it completely pulled her out of her depression. So far fluoxetine has helped me, but I think in time I will need a larger dosage. I would really rather not do that, so my question is: is it safe to take niacin supplements of 100 mg daily plus an extra multivitamin with 20mg. I don't want to end up taking too many vitamins.
Avatar m tn I have been on statins for quite a few years, with problems. First was Lipitor, it did great for my cholesterol, but I started getting skin whelps on my arms. I quit taking it, and within 2 weeks they were gone, despite an allergist not finding it. I tried Vytorin, had muscle and joint pain. But in the past few years, taking simvistatin and a few others, it has been a mood/anger issue. My wife complains, telling me I'm pain to live with, I argue all the time, go off at the slightest thing.
345079 tn?1299202476 I have a problem with my HDL(good) levels of cholesterol it is hereditary and diet and exercise are not helping it at all. So a few months back my doctor told me I needed to take Niacin(vitamin B3 in high doses basically) so I tried it. Well it has the worst side effects ever. It causes major flushing, itching, burning of the skin. I felt horrible and started to panic pretty badly. Never took it again.

Avatar f tn Instead, the pharmacist gave her 150mcg of it. After three months, she was feeling awful, Ached all over had a fever and much more. What advise can I give her and what kind of doctor does she need to see to get better? The GP that put her on it is giving her prednisone to make her feel better but as soon as she goes off of it the fever and pain come back and she is having awful effects of the prednisone. Pleas help!
Avatar m tn I found this interesting podcast from Chris Kresser - RHR: How Your Lipoprotein(a) Level Affects Your Risk of Heart Disease. So from that info find a good quality fish oil. I believe Krill Oil is even better but it's more expensive. There is also niacin (look for non flush niacin) and L-carnitine. And of course look at your diet. You can check out what to eat and avoid on this article from Authority Nutrition: A Paleo Diet Meal Plan and Menu That Can Save Your Life.
519736 tn?1253986826 Prior to this he was advised to use Slo Niacin. When he began the lipitor, his dr. did not tell him to stop taking the Slo Niacin. He has been taking them together daily. Last week he experienced more frequent, loose bowels, but did not feel "sick"..This went away and he started to have muscle pain in the chest and upper back and his legs..that began 3 days ago. The muscle pain is preventing him from getting any sleep. he has missed the last 2 days of work.
484759 tn?1208573669 m experiences most of the listed pysical side effects (dilated pupils, nausea for most of the day, dizzyness, some restlessness etc.), but mentally I feel like I'm alive again and don't want to give up this medication at all. I have corrected the dosage as of today (1 x 50mg/day for the remaining of the 14 days and then increase to 1 x 100mg/day).
