Avatar m tn ve just begun researching Chromium as a supplement (blood sugar management and muscle gain/fat loss), and came across information that indicates that there might be a difference between Chromium and Chromium Polynicotinate. Is there? The reason I ask, in shopping for Chromium Polynicotinate, I found the following on the back of a bottle: Chromium ....................................... ??? mcg (as Chromium Polynicotinate) How should I interprete this?
Avatar m tn While some people recommend taking niacin with a low-fat snack, I discourage this approach, as low-fat snacks like crackers contribute to increased levels of dangerous small LDL. Take niacin with an aspirin. When you start niacin and whenever you increase the dose, taking an adult (325-mg) uncoated aspirin tablet can block the niacin flush.
Avatar m tn t have enough self control to lose any weight. I had muscle pain and memory loss with statins, flushing and finally facial swelling with niacin supplements. The memory loss was so bad, I sold my veterinary practice and retired BEFORE the lawsuit. I ran for exercise until I wore out my left knee, now I walk. Again, these labs are before any medication.
Avatar n tn I don't know if this helps you..but in layman's terms...niacin B3 is needed to create energy for metabolism. Are you having problems with weight gain or loss?
Avatar n tn Are there other symptoms that you are experiencing? Niacin, or vitamin B3, is a powerful mobilizer of both fat and the fat-soluble toxins. As a vasodilator, niacin increases the flow of blood to the skin dilates blood vessels and creates a sensation of warmth, called a "niacin flush" or sensation of heat. These are the most common side effects when using Niacin: diarrhea; dry skin; headache; itching; stomach upset; temporary skin redness, tingling or feelings of warmth.
Avatar m tn Gee, thanks for noticing, "Jack". I actually LOST a bet over in weight-loss and dieting!!! I'm 3lbs OVER for the bet (big day is TODAY). Looks like I'm gonna have to make a clown video and post it on YouTube. Ugh. Unless, I can "forget" to do it, eh? BTW, where were you with the 5 weight-loss supplements that really work when I needed them??? JK!
1135275 tn?1586565652 Supplements are always difficult to compare with food. The body is adapted to taking in nutrients in the form of food, not isolated supplements, and not all supplements are created equal -- some companies use higher quality ingredients than others. The reason to take supplements if if you think much higher dosages than you get in food will help a particular problem, and if you think -- and this is virtually always true -- you're not getting everything you need in your diet.
Avatar n tn Hello, You are right in saying that statins may cause memory loss. Statin drugs cause terrible side effects for some users, including mental confusion, memory loss and a general loss of mental focus. The cardiovascular benefits of statins are well established, but the effects of these agents on the human brain are not as well established. The more lipid-soluble the statin, the greater propensity it has to cross the blood-brain barrier and affect the central nervous system.
1063764 tn?1272821064 I was watching a documentary and heard about a case where a woman was put on niacin supplements for depression. She was taking very large dosages, but it completely pulled her out of her depression. So far fluoxetine has helped me, but I think in time I will need a larger dosage. I would really rather not do that, so my question is: is it safe to take niacin supplements of 100 mg daily plus an extra multivitamin with 20mg. I don't want to end up taking too many vitamins.

Avatar n tn Nuts would also help but Niacin for sure can improve that number..otherwise you have good numbers. I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers. I already had heart disease before I got serious so I know how it feels to have a time bomb in your heart and I am doing my best to reverse or stop the plaque from progressing.
Avatar f tn Both are high in fat (lipids) so the answer is probably "yes". However, it would be difficult to say how many "points" they would add to his cholesterol "score", even if you gave specific amounts.
Avatar f tn I am trying this special scale now that tells me my bone density, water and muscle level. The number are 40% for fat, which is strange, 35% and 35% for water and muscle, and bone is 4%.
Avatar f tn itself, and you will still be burning calories/fat. Including a daily amount of even light exercise - 30 minutes of moderate walking, for example - will have much better effects, however.

Avatar n tn I now take my meds which are Tricor and Pravastatin. But in addition to those I take 500mg of Niacin in the morning and again in the evening. He needs to get that number down because I have had multiple heart attacks from the plaque in my blood. And that comes from the high levels of triglycerides in the blood. That is the fat that causes the plaque to form. The Niacin is a good supplement in treating this.
Avatar f tn I've read conflicting articles saying that niacin is necessary for thyroid function and then some that say it can lower thyroid levels and cause liver damage. I've seen it in some iron supplements and wondered if I needed to stay away from it or if it would be good to take.
