Esomeprazole (Nexium) is slightly different than omeprazole (Prilosec). But your body could react the same way. You could try a small amount and see. There are some combo otc drugs by Rolaids and others that have an antacid and famotidine (acid reducer). Those probably don't work as well.

I think it really depends on the person. I've tried Prilosec, Nexium and Aciphex, all for extensive periods of time. My # 1 all-time fave is Nexium, and Aciphex is also very effective. Prilosec doesn't seem to work as well. Just my experience.

The active components in Nexium are esomprazole magnesium and in Prilosec are Omeprazole Magnesium. Also, Nexium comes in 20 mg and 40 mg capsules and Prilosec is sold over the counter in 20 mg tablets. My GI switched me to Nexium because Aciphex gave me terrible side effects and Protonix made my water brash symptoms ever worse. I have tried Prilosec in the past and it didn't have much of an effect for me.

If so is there another drug that can help with reflux/heartburn that is not a PPI? I had problems with Nexium as well (dizziness and rapid heart rate) so I'm hesitant to try another PPI drug.

Nexium is suppose to be a cleaner version of Prilosec. I have tried all of the acid blockers and Nexium is my last resort before surgery is necessary. While on Prilosec, I couldn't lift a dumbbell which wasn't good because I worked in a Lady's gym. Nexium...I have been on this for 6 years now and the only side effect I have is diarrhea. Prilosec and Nexium is for heartburn. Prilosec is taken over a 14 day period and can only be taken every 4 months. Not sure about dosing for Nexium but Prilosec is often prescribed because it is over the counter.

Hi, my doc put me on 14d Prevpac treatment today. I've been taking Prilosec during the past month or so to get my symptoms under control. It works quite well for me. I have never taken Prevacid before. Are these two the same thing? Can I use Prilosec to substitute the Prevacid in the pack? I collapsed with a perforated ulcer. The doctor told me I had to quit smoking because nicotine, a drug, activates the acid pumps in my stomach lining and would irritate my ulcer.
