Common Questions and Answers about New rsv prophylaxis guidelines

rsv

Avatar n tn I was just wondering if you could comment on the new recomendations for antibotics before dental work. My daughter & myself have bicuspid aortic valve with moderate aortic insufficiency and in the past have been told that it is extremely important to receive antibiotics before any dental work. Now my cardiologist is telling me it is no longer needed, my daughter isn't due to see the ped card till Nov so I don't know if he has changed his mind on this also.
Avatar n tn Your answer can be found on the web site of the American Heart Association
Avatar m tn Now according to revised guidelines by the american heart association for prevention of infective endocarditis, the antibiotic prophylaxis is not routinely recommended for all dental procedures. For patients with underlying cardiac conditions, prophylaxis is reasonable for all dental procedures that involve manipulation of gingival tissue or the periapical region of teeth or perforation of the oral mucosa. So, if the procedure involves the above manipulations, you may need prophylaxis.
Avatar n tn You can go to AHA pages and see the new guidelines. Antibiotic prophylaxis is only recommended for people who have serious problems, not for healthy people with mild regurge. I think my cardiologist told me back in May, shortly before the new guidelines were published on the AHA site. Yipeee!! .

Avatar n tn My cardiologist notes that since I have no residual mitral regurg, I no longer need dental prophylaxis. I trust my cardiologist and have the utmost faith in him. Regardless, this worries me. He said he has never seen an endocarditis in this situation. How big can the denominator be with MVVs? And for a rare event, would he have seen enough to make the recommendation?

The guy started pep 48 hours after his exposure, took pep for 3 months and still came out positive in less than 3 months http://www.aidsmap.
503418 tn?1231098736 Since 1955, the AHA has made recommendations for prevention of infective endocarditis with antimicrobial prophylaxis before specific dental, gastrointestinal (GI), and genitourinary (GU) procedures in patients at risk for its development. However, many authorities and societies, as well as the conclusions of published studies, have questioned the efficacy of antimicrobial prophylaxis in most situations.
Avatar f tn I am only providing you advice on commonly known guidelines of prescribing PrEP. PrEP should be reserved for known exposure to HIV+ persons. And, since your anal sex was protected, you did not experience a risk from the encounter you describe.

Avatar n tn m sorry your little boy is going through this! My DD did not have RSV ever, but she does have asthma. Every time we meet with a new doctor we are always asked if she had RSV as an infant. I would assume that many of the same preventative measures you will be taking for your son's healthy lung care will be much the same as preventative asthma measures. Good luck to you and your little one.
Avatar f tn My son had rsv and the hospital kept him and thankfully we were released in a few hours because his breathing was better.its scary to do that at home, honestly they should of kept him he's only an infant ! Please contact a doctor I honestly don't think he should be home my son was two months old when he had it, and my husband ask if we can go home with him and they told us some pretty scary stuff .
Avatar n tn Aortic valve insufficiency ceased to be a higher risk defect after the new guidelines, unless you have had endocarditis before. Therefore, many cardiologists have stopped using endocarditis prophylaxis for dental procedures for aortic insufficiency, although there has also been a fair bit of individual variation with this based on the cardiologist’s knowledge of the patient’s specific situation.
Avatar f tn per the latest American Heart Association guidelines, antibiotic prophylaxis for endocarditis (a severe infection of the heart) is no longer recommended for MR, nor is it recommended for gastrointestinal procedures.
Avatar n tn The issue of antibiotic prophylaxis for dental procedures for people with valvular heart disease is controversial. Your dentist is correct in that indiscriminate use of antibiotics can cause side effects and can induce resistance in common infectious organisms. On the other hand, endocarditis can be a serious disease that should be prevented if at all possible.
238668 tn?1232732330 - The recommendations in this article reflect analyses of relevant literature regarding procedure-related endocarditis, in vitro susceptibility data of pathogens causing endocarditis, results of prophylactic studies in animal models of endocarditis, and retrospective analyses of human endocarditis cases in terms of antibiotic prophylaxis usage patterns and apparent prophylaxis failures.
Avatar m tn ENTA) announced that it has expanded its research and development programs within the company’s core focus areas of virology and liver disease to include new programs to treat hepatitis B virus (HBV) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections. Enanta also announced that the first subject was dosed in a phase 1 clinical study with EDP-494, its cyclophilin inhibitor for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV).
Avatar m tn In particular, patients with simple, unoperated bicuspid aortic valve do not require special antibiotic prophylaxis for procedures under these new American guidelines. This has been considered quite controversial in both the USA and in other Western countries. There are some physicians who feel that the risk of not treating with antibiotics is a risk they are unwilling to take. I am not sure what the physicians in India feel about these recommendations.

Avatar n tn In one study, 50 women with thrombophilia (including 20 factor V Leiden heterozygotes) and recurrent pregnancy loss were treated with enoxaparin throughout 61 subsequent pregnancies. The live birth rate was 75% with enoxaparin prophylaxis, compared to 20% in prior untreated pregnancies [Brenner et al 2000].
