Neurontin vs gaba

Common Questions and Answers about Neurontin vs gaba

neurontin

Avatar n tn Neurontin acts on the GABA receptors in the nervous system. GABA is the inhibitory neurotransmitter, that is, (very simplistically), it turns down the effects of the other stimulatory neurotransmitters. The benzos, (valium, Klonopin, etc also act on GABA). Alcohol also promotes GABA's numbing effects & it's likely that some people who like this effect of alcohol may experience similar sensations from Neurontin.
Avatar f tn s an addictive drug and interferes with REM sleep and over the long term will leave you with a benzo problem and rebound insomnia. And Neurontin is very sedating. Clonazepam targets GABA receptors; neurontin is GABA. It should be better for sleep than clonazepam, but people do react differently. Anything bugging you? Ever seen a therapist to see if your sleep problem can be fixed rather than medicated?
Avatar f tn t really pass the blood/brain barrier well. If you really want to treat withdrawal with GABA, the drug to take is Neurontin, if you want to take a drug. To get GABA naturally, best to take taurine, the amino acid that makes it along with B-6, and some relaxant herbs such as kava or passionflower. Withdrawal from Prozac doesn't usually begin if it begins at all until a while after you stop, since it stays in the body for a long time, unlike other ssris.
874521 tn?1424116797 I've been on 1800 mg neurontin for 4-5yrs now...but its no longer working as it once did..and I have been using 2100mg (on my own) for a few weeks now but think I need even higher dose...so will mention to my doctor when I get rx refilled. My question is: Is there anyone that has been on this med for a long time and at a high dose? And what are the side effects of long term high doses? (other than the generically silly ones they give on some sites)...I want PERSONAL experiences..
Avatar m tn Gabapentin is a class of drug known as a GABA analogue. GABA is an abbreviation for gaba-amino-butiryc-acid, a chemical neurotransmitter that helps induce sleep in the brain. GABA also reduces nerve impuses, which is why it works for neuropathic pain. While gabapentin is not GABA, it mimics its action, and creates drowsiness. The side effects are dose dependent, so please report your side effects and ask your doctor for help. Perhaps a reduced dose might help you with the drowsiness.
Avatar f tn I was just given a script for Neurontin (Gabapentin) from my neurologist. Need to know side effects. Also, how tolerated is this for a persons stomach or digestive track?
8496079 tn?1398412516 I have been on Neurontin since 1999. I remember when I first started taking it I would not remember at all what had happen recently. I lost my short term memory and every time we had to up the dose( because you get so used to it so fast it become ineffective), the same effect would happen. I am now on 3600mg/day. that's the highest it can go. But Neurontin has it long term effect.
7191139 tn?1389055599 First, antidepressants don't increase GABA in the brain. The don't work on GABA, they work on other neurotransmitters, and they don't even increase those, they just alter how the body uses them, so Abilify and ssris, for example don't target GABA. Benzos do target GABA, but don't necessarily increase it, again, they alter the way the body uses it mostly. GABA supplements don't generally cross the blood/brain barrier, so they don't usually increase GABA either.
2033870 tn?1329481339 Seems like the definition of rapid cycling bi polar would allow many bi polar people to fit that category. I am manic bi polar myself and i cant tell you much about neurontin but it must be better than xanax because i can pop 6 or 8 xanax and it wont even slightly slow me down. I have had a lot of luck with a drug called symbyax. Its a good drug if you got good insurance but too expensive if you dont. It finally got too weak for me though and i just quit medication.
453029 tn?1205951419 m sitting in my dr just too me off tegretol and put me on neurontin as ive been havingthese more frequent now.
Avatar f tn First, if you're on any drug such as benzos or neurontin that target GABA don't take this. Second, GABA supplements don't usually cross the blood/brain barrier, so they don't usually work. The best way to supplement for GABA, assuming you're not on medication that targets it, is to take the pseudo amino acid taurine and B6, which together with other co-factors make GABA in the body.
Avatar n tn Gabapentin or Neurontin its trade name from Pfizer actually mimics the bodys or brains own reward system known as Gaba Gama Amino Butyric Acid hence the name GABApentin however it does not lock into the same receptors according to the full prescribing info it is not known how it actually functions as is the case with many drugs but in double blind placebo studies has shown remarkable capabability in stopping cravings in any drug dependence.
620877 tn?1282764097 For those of you who take Gabapentin (Neurontin): Just curious what side effects you have experienced (and at what dosage), and how long they lasted? I just started this last weekend, 300mg once a day at bedtime. I am having a really hard time waking up in the morning and for the first half of the day I feel a little "loopy" or my head feels "swimmy"....if that makes any sense.....
757137 tn?1347196453 Don't know anything about the substance you mention, but the best way to treat Type !! and its consequences is tackling the cause, which is diet and lifestyle, as far as we know at this point. This means a pancreas friendly diet, lots of antioxidants, low on the sugar metabolism scale, etc. There are medications for neuropathy -- I think neurontin is one, and since it's basically GABA, I would guess working on GABA might be helpful.
Avatar f tn I take 300mg 3 or 4 times a day and have been at this dosage for about 9 months for bulging C6/7. I'm scheduled for surgery in a few weeks and I want to stop the neurontin. My body starts aching horribly, and my mood really goes bad if I'm late for a dose. I'm on day two of eliminating the mid day dosage and I'm doing so-so. Does anyone have any advise for me?
Avatar m tn The other things you can buy from the local health food store is something called GABA which we know is related in some way to neurontin-gabapentin. This is a natural GABA supplement that will work to restore your natural anxiety blocking and calming brain chemicals. The other two things that will help you are 5HTP, for any depression you may have which is the precursor to serotonin. Its natural but the stuff really works, and L-tyrosine.
1278070 tn?1276224405 hey, im on neurontin too, with me it wasn't working so my dose was going up and up im now on 5000ml a day ive been on this dose for 3yrs now i have no pain at all now .
Avatar f tn Well, I finally got my prescription filled and it is Neurontin. has anyone taken this?? I looked it up, but would love to hear from anyone who has taken it before I take it tonight. Reading about it kind of freaked me out....
370181 tn?1595629445 s pretty useless as a supplement. There are ways of targeting GABA, though weaker than taking Neurontin (GABA that bypasses the digestive system) or a benzo, such as taking the nutrients that the body uses to manufacture GABA, taurine and B6. Or taking relaxants that target GABA, such as valerian, kava, and many others.
Avatar m tn On august 1st, I quit suboxone at 8mg, I had been taking ALOT of neurontin aka gabapentin during the withdrawal to help with symptoms, I was taking around 6,000 to 7,000 mg a day, somedays even 10,000mg but that amount was very rare.
451366 tn?1211304932 YOU CAN TAKE LYRICA OR NEURONTIN (GABABENTIN) THEY BOTH WORK GREAT... I SWITCH BETWEEN THE TWO.. LYRICA CAUSES A LITTLE MORE DIZZINESS... MY MOM THINKS GABAPENTIN WORKS BETTER THO.. I TAKE THEM AND THEY WORK ABOUT THE SAME... THEY ARE GREAT FOR BURNING FEET OR RESTLESS LEGS AND BACK PAIN. I TAKE IT WITH TRAMADOL PAIN MED AND CYMBALTA FOR BURNING FEET... A TOTAL MIRACLE WORKER COMBINED....
Avatar f tn In my personal experience, about 15 years ago,I was on Neurontin ( GABA ) for 4 years. It was prescribed to me for pain along with an opioid. It worked nicely. I am unaware of Neurontin being prescribed for sleep. There is one caution: although every person is different, I found this medication extremely difficult to withdrawal from, even tapering. If you have concerns speak with your Dr.
1291268 tn?1274810922 Neurontin works for me with 2 tramodols with it started taking 3oo mlg of neurontin now 1200mlg with 2 tramodols work for me
Avatar f tn I wouldn't take anything that affects brain neurotransmitters given the huge number of drugs you're already taking that are duplicative in targeting these receptors. For example, say you tried valerian. Although plants are more complicated synergistically than science can figure out to this point in time, it is widely thought that valerian targets GABA to produce its relaxing effect, at least in part.
