Neurontin used to treat anxiety

Common Questions and Answers about Neurontin used to treat anxiety

neurontin

Avatar n tn Neurontin is used to treat partial seizures and, also, nerve pain.It causes drowsiness and causes users to become less alert. It should not be taken with opiates due to increased effect. I guess if taken in larger doses it would just make a person tired and stupid. Not what It's intended for... Good luck getting your child away from this...
2097395 tn?1333262190 t as commonly prescribed as the SSRIs or benzos, but it most certainly can be used to treat mood disorders, with a good deal of success actually. I've seen the elderly population benefit from Gabapentin being used to treat depression and anxiety. I worked at a facility where we cared for a lot of long term ventilator patients. Those folks deal with a lot of anxiety. A good bit of them were on Neurontin. Mhibbe....
1167245 tn?1353878500 are benzodiazepines typically used to treat agitation? I was thinking of asking my psychiatrist for a short term (a week or two) prescription for a longer lasting benzo to get me though the week when I feel like this. I truly am non-functional with this type of agitation, and for someone who is currently having some serious problems with suicidal preoccupation, it's quite worrisome. Any thoughts of suggestions as to which meds could be helpful in this situation? Thanks!
Avatar f tn There are MANY MANY different medication approaches to treating anxiety and panic, along with therapy. There are so many different kinds of drugs used to treat anxiety, not just benzos. Usually, in the event of a panic attack, the shorter acting benzos (Xanax, Ativan), are the best choices, because they have a much quicker onset of action, and if only taken here and there "as needed", there is very little concern of tolerance or dependency.
Avatar m tn If you have complete faith in your psych then trust that she knows best, if not, get another opinion. Neurontin is mainly used as an anti-convulsant and to treat nerve pain, but has become widely used in many other off label areas. There is much controversy over it's effectiveness in psychiatry, with some studies suggesting it's does little more than a placebo. Others say it's effective for those resistant to the usual medications.
Avatar f tn Neurotin is chemically similar to the drug Lyrica. Neurontin is also used to treat nerve pain caused by herpes virus or shingles. It can interact with hydrocodone, morphine or naproxen and others. I have taken it but it was not successful in treating my sciatic pain. However others have had relief. I hope this bit of information helps you. If you have additional questions please continue to post. Take care of yourself and let us know how you are doing.
915369 tn?1355314810 Yes well I tried Neurontin which is the other name for it in combination with Lamictal (Neurontin is generally used as an adjunct medication regardless of what medication its used with) and I found that it made me too nervous and that can happen but each person responds differently to each medication.
2033870 tn?1329481339 neurontin is an old drug very well suited for anxiety. the reason why pdocs don't recommend it is because it's a weak mood stabilizer NO MORE. Yet I know people who reported that they find it extremely good. Besides one of the few if not the only one with almost no serious side effects.
Avatar f tn Hi, Lyrica is 'pregabalin', a different chemical from Neurontin, or 'gabapentin'. They are similar in function though; they both bind -to and inhibit the same neuronal structure-- a voltage-gated calcium channel. Both medications reduce the flow of calcium into certain nerve terminals; the calcium would normally trigger the release of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate, or Substance P, a chemical involved in pain transmission.
Avatar m tn ve been through withdrawals without it so I know exactly how much the suck! I used neurontin and was able to go on with life. I still had the chills and some anxiety, but you was bearable. It really helped me the most with sleep. The only side effect I had from it was a tinge of a headache and a little fuzzy headed. That could have been from the withdrawals though. Neurontin was originally prescribed for siezure, bi-polar, and convulsions.
Avatar f tn Keep working with the docs and if they cannot find a medical cause, then look into more intensive anxiety treatment. As we treat the anxiety and it starts improving, many anxiety-related symptoms will start fading into the distance. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I saw a Neurologist on Monday, a Physiologist on Tuesday. Together between these doctors we have developed a plan to treat me & to continue trying to find out what's wrong. I finally feel like I'm being treated, and someone wants to find the cause. The physiologist is great. I was put on Neurontin & Darvocet for the pain. I've taken darvocent before, so I know how it affects me - no problems there.
Avatar f tn Neurontin was compared with lorazepam in a recent double blind trial for alcohol withdrawal. They found that withdrawal symptoms were significantly lower with high-dose gabapentin (1200 mg/day) than with lorazepam during treatment and follow-up assessments. Compared with lorazepam, gabapentin was associated with significantly lower probability of drinking after day 1 and less daytime sedation (high-dose only), anxiety, and craving during the medication phase.
Avatar f tn t really pass the blood/brain barrier well. If you really want to treat withdrawal with GABA, the drug to take is Neurontin, if you want to take a drug. To get GABA naturally, best to take taurine, the amino acid that makes it along with B-6, and some relaxant herbs such as kava or passionflower. Withdrawal from Prozac doesn't usually begin if it begins at all until a while after you stop, since it stays in the body for a long time, unlike other ssris.
Avatar f tn Please be careful with using Neurontin... my husband who is addicted to opiates has become addicted to the Neurontin as well. It may sound silly, and I don't have a ton of knowledge on drugs and such, but you can find and read countless forums with people talking about how they abuse the drug, and the horrible withdrawals they go through when running out of it.
Avatar f tn Lamictal is widely used as an anti epileptic medication to prevent seizures but has began being used to treat bipolar symptoms in more recent years. Wasn't Neurotin used to treat seizures as well as nerve pain? That would explain why the properties would have similarities.
Avatar n tn I don't know if it's expensive or not. I have insurance and it's $20. I haven't noticed any side effects. When I increased the dose I did feel sort of like a foggy feeling the next morning but it only lasted for a few hours and one day. Anxiety wise I don't know if it's helping or not yet...I have a heart condition as well and it's hard for me to determine whether it's my heart or the anxiety.
Avatar m tn The lexapro is another anti-depressant with anti anxiety qualities. The whole approach from your doctor is to treat your anxiety without the use of benzos. I'm sure he will reduce the amounts slowly as the other meds have time to to take effect. Neurontin (gabapentin/a chemical already found in the brain) will simply enhance your brains ability to produce dopamine which in turn produces a calm and well being more naturally than a benzo. As with any detox the slower you go the better.
Avatar f tn Neurontin has an interesting background. It was once heavily marketed to pain cliinics for treatment of neuropathic pain, and is still used for that purpose. But it was also marketed (illegally, according to the FDA) as a mood stabilizer, even though there are no good studies showing it is effective treatment for bipolar disorder. The company that makes the drug was hit with t large fine about ten years ago for taking docs to the Caribbean and giving them lectures and marketing pitches...
Avatar n tn I used Neurontin to get off the percocets. I would eat my bottle of percs in 2 weeks, buy whatever i could for a week and always had a week with nothing. I read about neurontin and went to my doc and got a script for neurontin AND lyrica. It helped TREMENDOUSLY. I was using so much that i was high off of that and it became yet another substance my body was addicted to. ---- But it helped with the opiate wd.
203342 tn?1328737207 A child psychiatrist put my 15 year old daughter on Zolof for depression and anxiety and Neurontin as a mood stabilizer. When I looked it up, it said it was used as a seizure medicine and sometimes for bipolar but hadn't really been tested much for that. She's never been officially diagnosed with bipolar. She does have angry outbursts a lot over things that shouldn't be that big of a deal. In other words, she overreacts a lot.
Avatar f tn Neurotin had a class action lawsuit against them. I know this because my father was part of it. He was taking neurotin for 4 yrs and it caused him to have seizures. Im sure they would've had to of made changes to the medication for it to still be on the market but sometimes money is all people care about so just be very careful. I know how desperate pill addiction can make you and you will sometimes do anything to feel better or normal again.Clonodine was a good one for me.
Avatar n tn Neurontin is given and used specifically to treat nerve pain. The best example is that it is given for the shingles. I doubt you have nerve pain but I am not a doctor. You need to addequately have your pain treated. I disagree with the above poster stating no narcotics. You sound like someone who follows doctor's orders and uses medicine to have a better quality of life. A better thing for you to do is to post in the Pain Management forum.
Avatar f tn My psychiatrist has discussed the older model of this drug, gabapentin, or Neurontin. That's cheaper and probably works as well, but for anxiety it's usually used as an augmentation to an ssri or something rather than as a primary med. It is used as a primary med when you have something intractible and they start throwing the kitchen sink at a problem, which is, unfortunately, my case, but not yours.
Avatar f tn Ive read about people using Neurontin to treat General Anxiety Disorder and even a few atricles on treating THC withdrawals. I have access to quite a few 300 mg capsules and Im wondering if anyone can tell me how of if they might help.
1134609 tn?1269272200 The Neurontin is a good medication for me, as a mood stabilizer and as an anti-anxiety drug. I just adapt to it quickly. I couldn't tolerate any of the APs of Lithium; they drove me up a wall.. If I hadn't had my Ativan on hand or access to my shrink, I would have ended up in the hospital.
