Avatar f tn The substance in the body that makes serotonin is tryptophane, which metabolizes to 5htp, which metabolizes to serotonin. Therefore, the only natural remedy that creates serotonin, in theory, is tryptophane or 5htp. 5htp is recommended above tryptophane, because tryptophane is harder to get to the brain, and needs an additional step. Many of the substances mentioned by Bi would be counter-productive.
Avatar f tn Hi I have been taking a 25mg of trazadone to help with sleep but I wanna try natural remedies like valarian root or magnesium. Can I take both natural remedies?
Avatar n tn I know some psychiatrists would use them but a person should especially never try anything like this on their own as if they have bipolar they will set off manic episodes. As for anything online or natural remedies that claim to cure everything that is blatant misinformation. Don't believe it. I take rhodiola for my physical disability and its used for depression. But if you look it up online there are claims it cures everything and they are untrue.
1348686 tn?1310654243 Hello Jul~I am sorry that you are suffering so from anxiety, I experience it too as well as the full blown panic attack, I know they are no fun. You said they were getting worse? Are you under any extra stresses lately? As to what to take, well, a good, food grade multi-vitamin and mineral is a good start. Make sure also, that you get a good amount of the "B" vitamin, this is the "nerve" vitamin, and without enough, you will have all kinds of anxiety, etc.
Avatar n tn There is also a product PERIKA which has 3% standarized extract . Below is amoryn product formula . If you start on perika then also combine the listed supplements .There was some controversy that when tested amoryn actually has less than .5% and perika is better but amoryn always worked for me .
1808884 tn?1324345703 ( has Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) This causes more serotonin to be available at the receptor site. Too much serotonin can be a bad thing however. The re-uptake inhibitors prevent this, which is why I don't like antidepressants personally. Hope that helps. Otherwise congrats on making it 11 days now, keep up the good work!
Avatar f tn However, if you are on an anti-depressant you are cautioned not to take the l-tyrosine as you can produce too much serotonin and end up with some issues (I have personally done this). Great that you are reaching out for more natural ways to boost your energy. Yes, exercise is also a good idea to boost your natural endorphins as well. Keep trying and moving forward! You are doing a great job!
19424576 tn?1477442250 You might also consider the fact that low Serotonin levels and low Magnesium levels can increase cravings for carbs before and during menstruation. Serotonin (a natural brain chemical) naturally elevates our moods, affects our sleep cycles and appetites; also allows our bodies to deal with stress better.

1772374 tn?1326246237 Just did some simple googling. Apparently a "new" drug (seems like the old ones) for bipolar disease. It's so new and so untested the mechanism of action is apparently not clearly known, but it probably acts in part on serotonin, meaning you shouldn't be taking 5htp with it for cautionary reasons, especially since this is a new med and the side effects won't be known for years.
Avatar m tn This report includes a list of what Amino acid, and specific vitamins to take depending on if your problem stems from Serotonin or Neurephinepherine depletion. I have been implementing the plan and I swear it really works! Don't get me wrong I am still taking my meds, but until I tried this plan, my meds were not working as well. Trust me I am very skeptical of any natural suppliments to ease Depression and anxiety, but this really works.
Avatar m tn d see someone who does to guide you -- usually remedies are combined to work on different parts of the body for best results, but therapy and lifestyle changes are always included in the natural treatment of mental illness. A good book for an overview of natural remedies is Natural Highs by Hyla Cass, a psychiatrist at UCLA. Good luck.
1100140 tn?1260594269 The liver synthesize B3 from the liver using an amino acid called tryptophan then tryptophan is used to form serotonin. Having a daily intake of B3 will make it easier for the tryptophan.
Avatar f tn Sam-E is NOT for people with BP. I like to use naturals. This time I have been on a combination of naturals. There is a drawback. One, when you take 5htp...triptophan you are constantly sleepy. I was put on a small amount and it did NOT cut the depression. So I got up to 5,000 mg of 5htp and other combination of naturals. Now when taking prescription meds for your condition, you MUST tell your psych about everything you take.
Avatar f tn Thank you guys for your advice I'm going to try these vitamins and martial remedies and hope for the best :) all I can do right now is have faith in myself and try anything to get myself back to normal. I'm so glad I got on here to get advice from people who are going through the same thing. i probably won't be able to try any of these things tomorrow but I will be back on to let u all know how its going and see how you're doing.
Avatar f tn There is no substitute for healthy eating. There are some vitamins that are better than others, though. Do some research on muscle testing and you can find out if this is the right one for you.
Avatar m tn Hey you guys, thanks for all the advice! I agree, there are tons of scammy "natural" products out there. I think I have an idea what I'm looking for though. I want to try to fill in all the pieces for serotonin production. B vitamins, magnesium, tryptophan, maybe some GABA. I'll be very cautious though. Arsenic? Wow! Do people really try to sell that to the anxiously inclined? Nursegirl. I see what you're saying about seeking therapy.
Avatar m tn Don't know if 5-HTP will help your GAD. It's the metabolite of tryptophan the body uses to manufacture serotonin. So when it works it works as an ssri does, but through a different mechanism. ssris are stronger in theory, but make the body use old serotonin longer, causing side effects. 5-HTP is the body's natural way of making serotonin, but serotonin might not be the answer to GAD. Everyone's different.
1042487 tn?1275279899 Hello there, Healthy diet with appropriate nutriments intake ( vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, lipids ) will definitely help your situation. I recommend you step in you local food supplements store and check for Natural Factors vitamin B complex or any other brand the person at the store will recommend you if they don't have Natural Factors. Natural Factors Vitamins B complex have an average of 50mg/mcg per vitamin.
Avatar f tn Has anyone tried any vitamins for anxiety or panic attacks? Such as Niacin, Valerian vitamin b3, b12 or anything? I was reading up on some things.
11532111 tn?1421549858 These meds are out here and so so so many different ones. Most hit the Serotonin that is why it is a SRI which is a Serotonin reuptake inhibitor. There are some that hit many different areas of them chems in the brain. Wellbutrin is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. When we use for a long time our Receptors get plugged/full or even damaged so we are unable to make Serotonin. This is why the Drs push it on people who come off of opiates or such.
Avatar m tn Lots of people will tell you to take this supplement or that supplement for anxiety or insomnia, but natural medicine is usually done best by combining several supplements combined with lifestyle changes, such as therapy, meditation, exercise, dietary changes, etc. Some do get some effects by taking one supplement, but most won't.
Avatar m tn s no evidence anyone has more or less serotonin than anyone else. What ssris do is prevent the breakdown of serotonin so it soaks the neuron longer in it. This isn't the natural way the body acts, but these meds have helped many people. But whether you want to take them or not, or need them or not, is up to you. They won't cure you, they will only mitigate the symptoms you're having. If there is a cure, it's through therapy.
Avatar f tn It makes it hard to experiment with dosage and best time to take it. For a good book on using natural remedies for this, Natural Highs by Hyla Cass, a psychiatrist at UCLA, should get you started. But since theanine is weak at best, if you want to try this formula, I don't think it would hurt you any.
Avatar m tn They also have the SAM-E you can pick up at most stores. Talk to the Pharmacist and explain what you are looking for and in a more Natural way. Mine has always been so helpful. Others will Chime in for sure. I wish you the best!
Avatar n tn It sounds like you really know alot about the best herbs and natural elements for anxiety. I will look for the book you suggest. I strongly believe in natural remedies over drugs since i seem to have more success with them and less problems and side effects. I still use panicyl which is a blend of several of the vitamin b's and herbs you listed. May i ask what you take and what works for you Paxiled? Also, from your handle im guessing you had a bad experience with Paxil?
1243543 tn?1269124022 First, are you on medication? St. John's Wort is thought very highly of in Europe for moderate depression, but it isn't really on point for anxiety. 5-HTP plus herbal relaxants and a program of other supplements, exercise, dietary changes, and meditation would be the natural approach. A naturopath would be the expert to see about this, or a psychiatrist who practices integrated medicine. As for B12, it depends on whether you need it or not.
Avatar m tn I don't think this is actually true. What you are I think referring to is some research that suggests long-term use of antidepressants and benzos have an association with dementia. This is isn't a proven fact, it's an association, but is to be taken seriously. Causation hasn't been explained, so if they do have this effect, given how long it takes to get dementia, you would be old when you got it.
