Common Questions and Answers about Narcolepsy symptoms test

narcolepsy

1745492 tn?1320198340 I have symptoms that some people say are consistent with narcolepsy. However, all I have seen are people with severe narcolepsy, and I'm not as bad as them. I do have very vivid dreams that can be stressful to me. I can write whole books on my dreams because they are so vivid. They are so stressful sometimes that I wake up sweating. I can fall asleep quick. As in I can take an short nap, say an hour, and still dream. I do not sleep well at night and have very interrupted sleep.
729135 tn?1247495402 Over time, diagnoses sometimes change when additional evidence or symptoms appear. Regarding genetic testing for narcolepsy, positive test results indicate a susceptibility to narcolepsy but do not definatively diagnose narcolepsy. Positive genetic tests results are used to support a clinical diagnosis of narcolepsy. We recommend that you speak with your doctor regarding your symptoms and test results as well as to discuss the most appropriate course of treatment for your specific situation.
Avatar f tn I am assuming you had an overnight sleep test along with an MSLT nap test to receive this narcolepsy diagnosis. Did you have any other sleep disorders show up? Do you have episodes of cataplexy? My sleep doctor is one who (in general) doesn't entertain a diagnosis of narcolepsy until any other sleep disorders are therapeutically treated, as long term sleep disorders can mimic narcolepsy in some respects.
Avatar f tn I was reading up about it and this lead me to read about Narcolepsy as Cataplexy is a unique symptom to this condition. I read about the symptoms and I am now afraid that I may be suffering from it. I have very vivid and sometimes lucid dreams and I wake up almost every hour of the night for short spans of time. Sometimes I cannot tell my dreams from reality and I often hear noises and see things during the night that aren't really there.
Avatar m tn Yes, narcolepsy can result in disturbed nighttime sleep. Narcolepsy can only be diagnosed with a multiple sleep latency test during the day (usually preceded by an all night sleep study). Dr.
Avatar f tn t mention it but the second most commonly associated symptoms of Narcolepsy is Cataplexy, this basically causes sudden loss of muscle tone, weakness and loss of voluntary muscle control. IF you don't have a specific medical explanation, it's 'possible' for you to also be experiencing mini cataplexic attacks to explain the muscle and foot lift/drop issues......I would highly recommend you consider consulting with a health care provider that specialises in Narcolepsy.
Avatar m tn First of all, I'm sorry the doctor who ordered your testing didn't go more in depth in explaining the results to you. The information I'm going to give you here is based strictly upon the diagnostic criteria for different conditions; doctors use a combination of test results and diagnostic guidelines AND clinical expertise to reach diagnosis and treatment decisions, so there is no guarantee that this information pertains to your case in particular.
Avatar n tn Would many CFS sufferers be classified narcoleptic if they took the appropriate test? Narcolepsy leads back to hippothalmus and lack of production of hypocretin/orexin(?). Seems like all things lead to hippothalmus. Thank you!
Avatar f tn If you want further information on Narcolepsy or forum support please visit cataplexic ******* the members of that board all have Narcolepsy and understand the symptoms and devastating effects.
11941637 tn?1422287346 s or Lupus, has also been diagnosed with or shown symptoms of Narcolepsy. I have read recently that Narcolepsy has been determined to be auto-immune in nature, and wonder if the presence of one or both of these disorders in my genetics was the cause of my Narcolepsy. Has there been any research done on the subject?
Avatar n tn The formal way of diagnosing narcolepsy is to undergo a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) which is a daytime study after an overnight sleep study. If you're REM sleep deprived in general, you'll have what's called REM rebound, where you go into REM much quicker than normal. You may want to mention your symptoms the next time you meet with your sleep doctor.
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
Avatar n tn If you think it is narcolepsy, ask your doctor for a sleep study and/or a MSLT (mutli-sleep latency test). I was refered to a neurologist and he suggested these two sleep studies. Thank goodness! For 18 years I went to numerous doctors and specialists. Finally, I am getting some relief with medications. At least, if you do not have narcolepsy, you can rule this out and go on from there. I have narcolepsy without cataplexy.
1287446 tn?1313947638 Narcolepsy must have catoplexy in order to qualify as narcolepsy. Sleep studies are worthless. Doctors are worthless, clueless idiots that think spending enough money to put their children through medical school is the answer to every patient's problem, so you should just go get better insurance so they can keep charging more and more.
Avatar f tn Since some people have to have a spinal tap to dx MS, you might as well ask your doctor to test for narcolepsy also. There are other tests but since spinal tap is used for MS you can hopefully test for both. Symptoms of cataplexy: sixty to eighty percent of people with narcolepsy suffer from cataplexy. It can be triggered by surprise, fear, anger, or laughter.
Avatar m tn Do your symptoms match with peripheral neuropathy? I have narcolepsy, too, and I actually get some random numbness (not weakness) and tingling at times, but I have a host of other neurological symptoms that can be linked to a pineal cyst and two venous malformations. Narcolepsy is believed to be an autoimmune disease, although this hasn't been confirmed.
Avatar f tn I have had narcolepsy (and sleep apnea) for a long time. I had had three bariatric surgeries over the past 14 years, and my drs have wondered if some of my meds are not being absorbed properly or at the right rate, yet no one has done any kind of 'test' to determine that. I have tried everything possible for my narcolepsy---the ritalin patches, elixir ritalin.......etc, provigil, other meds....and of course xyrem. I take dextroamphetamine daily, even though it does litte...
Avatar f tn Narcolepsy! i am a 28 year old male who literally just started having the exact symptoms you described about 8 months ago. After several test and doctors visits i was diagnosed with sever narcolepsy, with catalepsy. Its common for the symptoms to come on suddenly between the ages of 15-30. I encourage you to research narcolepsy and if it has the ring of truth go see a neurologist.
Avatar f tn m worried that I might have narcolepsy or MS. Can someone with narcolepsy please tell me about their symptoms, especially leg jerks, muscle sensations, chills, fatigue? It would help me a lot.

Avatar n tn has anyone heard what vaccination is reportedly linked to narcolepsy? i saw a show yesterday about narcolepsy and they mentioned a vaccination was given to a 13 year old girl and 2 hours later she was experiencing cataplexly (a paralyzing catatonic state that is a symptom of narcolepsy) but they did not say which vaccination.
149081 tn?1242397832 t increase my meds because he does not believe my symptoms are thyroid. I also have Narcolepsy so symptoms of fatigue and brain fog do flow in a gray area for thyroid treatment. My latest labs are as follows: TSH - 2.15 range for this lab is .47 - 5.0 FT4- 0.58 range 0.64 - 1.
