Common Questions and Answers about Narcolepsy symptoms ritalin

narcolepsy

Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
Avatar f tn There should be a tracker that allows you to input symptoms of narcolepsy (which seems to be somewhat of an unknown disorder) that lets you input symptoms such as cataplexy, automatic behavior, medications (such as Ritalin), and scheduled nap times.
2164295 tn?1337019528 My son, age 41, has severe narcolepsy. He is on disability because of it. He takes Ritalin for the narcolepsy and clomipramine (generic for Anafranil) for the cataplexy. The Ritalin helps, but he can only take 3 pills a day (insurance won't approve more), and he really needs at least 2 more a day to stay awake and function. He has bad nightmares and yells out in his sleep when he does not have the clomipramine.
Avatar f tn Diagnosed with Narcolepsy. Have history of pituitary microadnoma high prolactin. PCOD historectamy 2002 On dostinex. Can something in my brain cause this. I am now on ritalin 20SR twice a day. Awake but body still tired. Also that thyroid medication had it irradiated a year ago Due to high levels. Is there any other answer for sleeping so much. Or am I just in denial.
Avatar m tn m pretty sure that I had this ADHD thing all along and that the ritalin was controlling the ADHD symptoms as well as the former sleep problem. Is this possible? I tried all of the new adult ADHD meds (like modafinil) and they didn't help at all, but the ritalin did 100%. I'm afraid to go to a doctor ith this mess of a story; it seems like I'm nuts.
Avatar f tn I have tried everything possible for my narcolepsy---the ritalin patches, elixir ritalin.......etc, provigil, other meds....and of course xyrem. I take dextroamphetamine daily, even though it does litte...if anything......I have tried capsules and tablets...crushed them in applesauce, etc....everything my neurologist (who is the 'main doctor' for sleep problems in my area) has suggested.....I literally can't keep going like this......

Avatar f tn I also have narcolepsy. I was diagnosed in 2005, but fought for 9 years to figure out what was wrong with me. My situation began in 1996, when I was 17 y/o and somehow got sick with mono. Since then, I've never been the same person. Yet, every time I explained to the doctors how I was feeling, it seemed like no one wanted to believe me or that I could be sooooooo incredibly tired/wanting to sleep all the time, especially because I was only in my late teens-early 20's.
Avatar f tn I was recently told I have Narcolepsy with Cataplexy. I am a 74 year old Female and I am taking 20mg of Ritalin SR in the AM and 25mg of Imipram for the cataplexy in the PM. I get about 2 to 4 hrs sleep and the rest of the night I toss and turn. My Dr. told me she doesn't give meds for her patients to sleep. I am concerned about not sleeping and then taking Ritalin to keep me awake during the day.I feel my health will be affected. Is this the normal way to treat my condition?
427801 tn?1203844562 if anything, the doc would prolly put me on adderall or another narcolepsy med before ritalin. no one seems to ever use ritalin anymore. i never ended up calling the doc on monday because i felt that my weekend wasa bit too much of a mess to make a good assessment on monday. i spent friday and saturday (24 hours) stranded on I-81 in the noreastern that just hit us...slept 1 horrible hour in my car. made it back to blacksburg that night and went out with a girl i'd met while stranded.

Avatar f tn Well testthe kind of sleep you are in while you sleep can test for Narcopelsy how long has this been a problem? I have been diagnosed my self with narcolepsy. Can fall asleep any where anytime!
416668 tn?1241742794 I was diagnosed with narcolepsy a few months ago. Since then, I have tried Provigil, which worked at first then seemed to make me even more tired! I was also tried on ritalin which did the same thing. Now I have been taking dextroamphetamine for about 2-1/2 months. At first it gave me incredible migraines and tension in my neck and shoulders. My doctor thinks that my body has adjusted to the medication because I no longer have these symptoms.
Avatar f tn Has anyone ever been prescribed Ritalin for Migraines? What is the thought about this? I am looking for alternative approaches for my chronic migraines, usually 2 migraines per week, 1 of which is completely debilitating. I tried a 5mg dose of Ritalin (1x day) for a week and it was a migraine free week (despite high stress and sleep deprivation due to work).
149081 tn?1242397832 t increase my meds because he does not believe my symptoms are thyroid. I also have Narcolepsy so symptoms of fatigue and brain fog do flow in a gray area for thyroid treatment. My latest labs are as follows: TSH - 2.15 range for this lab is .47 - 5.0 FT4- 0.58 range 0.64 - 1.
Avatar f tn Modafinil is a drug for narcolepsy prescribed for MS fatigue. I am interested in knowing if you have narcolepsy or MS fatigue. Recently I have been experiencing extreme fatigue for which my neuro prescribed amantadine. It is working. The next step would be modafinil but I was told that many of their patients use Ritalin or adderall. Both are addictive so they start with the ones with least side effects first. So far amantadine has been helping get me through my day without crashing.
Avatar m tn Concerta is an extended release form of Ritalin. Which is what I took when I was a kid. It is still a stimulant but it is much milder than Adderall. I think more doctors should start patients Concerta because it has fewer side effects than Adderall. I've never seen anyone have side effects as severe as you described from Adderall with Concerta. I still have some side effects from adderall. But I never remember having any from Ritalin (immediate release form of Concerta).

Avatar f tn -cataplexy (feeling weak/loss of muscle tone after strong emotion especially laughter) -sleep attacks (uncontrollable urge to sleep during the day) -hypnagogic hallucinations (intense dream like state on falling asleep or waking) -sleep paralysis (inability to move upon falling asleep or waking) -microsleeps (falling asleep for a split second, usually continue with whatever action you are doing without interruption)
1745492 tn?1320198340 I have symptoms that some people say are consistent with narcolepsy. However, all I have seen are people with severe narcolepsy, and I'm not as bad as them. I do have very vivid dreams that can be stressful to me. I can write whole books on my dreams because they are so vivid. They are so stressful sometimes that I wake up sweating. I can fall asleep quick. As in I can take an short nap, say an hour, and still dream. I do not sleep well at night and have very interrupted sleep.
Avatar m tn For me the reason for my condition being called that versus Narcolepsy is because I do not have cataplexy and did not go into REM within 5 mins of falling asleep. I did fall asleep within 3 mins but that wasn't "good enough" Unfortunately what it means as far as insurance companies are concerned is that we do not get meds that can help us like Provigil.
Avatar n tn Is there any other thing that is out there for him to try to get some energy - my neurologist is percribing ritalin, is that good? Do you know of anything else and if you have any trials going on pleaes consider him. Thank you.
