Narcolepsy medication nuvigil

Common Questions and Answers about Narcolepsy medication nuvigil

Avatar n tn I took nuvigil for 2 days. It didn't work for my narcolepsy and made my RLS horrible!
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
729135 tn?1247495402 Regarding genetic testing for narcolepsy, positive test results indicate a susceptibility to narcolepsy but do not definatively diagnose narcolepsy. Positive genetic tests results are used to support a clinical diagnosis of narcolepsy. We recommend that you speak with your doctor regarding your symptoms and test results as well as to discuss the most appropriate course of treatment for your specific situation. We wish you the best.
Avatar f tn Medications initiated for narcolepsy are central nervous system stimulants like modafinil (Provigil) or armodafinil (Nuvigil). As the side effects and addiction potential is less. Some people need treatment with methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin, others) or various amphetamines. These medications are very effective but may sometimes cause side effects such as nervousness and heart palpitations and can be addictive.
295756 tn?1247125892 I was recently given samples of the new drug Nuvigil i have so much trouble staying awake in the daytime... has anyone taken this ...and if so ...did you have a reaction to it ?? I thought it was doing ok ...but wasnt taking it every day. Well then I tried to remind myself to keep taking it ! I had noticed afew days that my head and eyes were itching like crazy...but thought nothing of it .then after the 4th straight day of it head was really bad...
Avatar f tn provigil(modafinal) and nuvigil are non-amphetamine stimulants... nuvigil is the sustained release version. most health insurances will require a you to try other drugs like ritalin first or prior authorizations and after all that still have it cost a lot by having some type of deductible/coinsurance for either one of these. anti-depressants will not help with drowsiness/sleep attacks.
2164295 tn?1337019528 Hello, I am looking for alternative treatments, natural remedies, and various exercise suggestions to help me increase wakefulness. I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy in November 2010, but I had been experiencing symptoms since I was around 10 to 11 years old. I am currently taking Vyvanse 70mg in the morning, 10mg of Adderall (short acting) in the evening, and trying to implement a daily nap schedule. Over the last year the cataplexy I experience has increased and my muscle tone has decreased.
Avatar f tn The good thing about Nuvigil is it is long lasting unlike other stimulants. My sister (who also has narcolepsy) turned out to be allergic to Nuvigil so she just takes adderol all day and she is having a really hard time managing it. Probably the hardest thing about narcolepsy is getting other people to understand the condition. Most people will just think you are lazy and unmotivated. They will tell you to just suck it up and get out of bed.
Avatar f tn I recently had a sleep study done and it showed no apnea, no REM and on average waking up 18 times an hour. I was but on Nuvigil 150mg and have been taking for 4 days but I don't want to take it anymore for several reasons. One it only lasts about 6 hrs and then I hit a wall. The second reason is I just feel creepy inside and my hrt rate on average is up 15-20 bpm. I just called the Doc to tell them about it and they are supposed to call back.
427801 tn?1203844562 well ive been prescribed nuvigil for my narcolepsy at 150mg every day. it worked for 2 days, but ive been on my own now for like over a month. im also bipolar, so the doc doesnt want to change meds without collaborating with my psychiatrist. however, my psychiatrist is like impossible to get a hold of. he only has an answering service, and you have to leave like 7-10 messages before he finally gets back to you...which is weeks later.
2288403 tn?1339564728 I was on Provigil for years never been on Nuvigil but it is probably similar only side effects I ever had was that if I took it too late I couldn't sleep that night one time I did look up the side effects for provigil and back ache was one of them but im not sure if I ever had that or not...

Avatar m tn Hi, welcome to the forum. Your history is suggestive of narcolepsy. In this condition there will be excessive daytime sleepiness. In this condition there will be “automatic behavior" such as driving past a highway exit or writing off a page, with no memory of the previous few minutes. Classical narcolepsy constitutes of Hypnagogic hallucinations, Sleep paralysis and Cataplexy (emotionally triggered muscle paralysis resulting in partial or complete collapse).
Avatar f tn A new doctor took me off it and I was just like you for 4 months. I finally convinced him that I had Narcolepsy that was diagnosed 30 years ago. He put me on Nuvigil, since I cannot no longer taake amphedamines and it worked.
Avatar f tn I was recently told I have Narcolepsy with Cataplexy. I am a 74 year old Female and I am taking 20mg of Ritalin SR in the AM and 25mg of Imipram for the cataplexy in the PM. I get about 2 to 4 hrs sleep and the rest of the night I toss and turn. My Dr. told me she doesn't give meds for her patients to sleep. I am concerned about not sleeping and then taking Ritalin to keep me awake during the day.I feel my health will be affected. Is this the normal way to treat my condition?
Avatar m tn MS, 22 years, Provigil / Nuvigil just not effective > 2 hrs, what is next ? Adderall ? I shut down around 1-2 PM, having an effect on my work quality, and this NYC heat is not helping. It has never been this bad. Would a next step med be Adderall, Ritilan, etc. Should I be afraid to take due to addiction issues with those meds ?
1142551 tn?1264736930 For me, the difference between Nuvigil and Provigil was amazing. Nuvigil gave me back my life. Provigil let me leave the house but I had trouble functioning. And since Provigil is "going away" it is tough to even get samples. My insurance never approved Provigil but they have approved Nuvigil.
Avatar f tn I just started taking medication for anxiety and depression 3 weeks ago. For over 6 months, I've had these symptoms: tingly feeling in my fingers and all over my body, feeling weak, brain fog, unable to concentrate, feels like my heart is beating fast for no reason at all, I'm super hungry but nothing sounds good.
Avatar f tn ve been given the new Nuvigil to try for a week. If that also works then we will fight my insurance company for that. Just checking to see if anyone has tried the new medicine or the generic form.
Avatar f tn Hey. Keep your head up, there's a lot you can do to work with this. Feeling defeated and depressed comes along with a sleep disorder, I know. I'm just a couple years younger than you. The same things happened to me. I was so smart but all my grades started falling because I could never get anything done. Everyone thought I was just lazy- I thought I was just lazy. But I was tired all the time and unmotivated. See a sleep specialist.
572651 tn?1530999357 A co-worker called this week with a question about our insurance - she was denied provigil/nuvigil, even though her doctor contacted the insurance company and appealed the decision. She suffers great fatigue and the sample helped her a lot. She was wondering if I had any clues as to how others get this drug approved since it is not an MS drug.
427801 tn?1203844562 I got the results on monday, and I do in fact have narcolepsy. The doc put me on Nuvigil (similar to Provigil). The stuff worked great for the first 2 days, but after that it completely stopped working. I'm back to falling asleep while I study. And its finals week, so the timing is very bad. I will be contacting the doctor tomorrow morning. I hope I can get this fixed asap.
Avatar f tn Modafinil is a drug for narcolepsy prescribed for MS fatigue. I am interested in knowing if you have narcolepsy or MS fatigue. Recently I have been experiencing extreme fatigue for which my neuro prescribed amantadine. It is working. The next step would be modafinil but I was told that many of their patients use Ritalin or adderall. Both are addictive so they start with the ones with least side effects first. So far amantadine has been helping get me through my day without crashing.
1207048 tn?1282174304 I was given Nuvigil to help me with the fatigue that is causing me to have to nap pretty much every afternoon. The prescription is for 250 mg, but the neuro said I could probably take a half a pill and be fine. The first day I took it I was fine. The second day I was wide awake until 1 am, so the next day I took it at about 9 am. All of those days I only took a 1/2 dose. The third time I was having rapid heartbeat and hand tingling off and on throughout the day.
Avatar f tn I too only had to do 4 naps bc it was clear I had narcolepsy. I was prescribed xyrem as well as nuvigil and provigil during the day. My dr had me titration each week starting at the smallest dose which you take twice a night (it's a pain waking up but you get used to it) and then worked my way up to the highest dose. I am also an extremely deep sleeper at night. An atom bomb could go off and I wouldn't hear a thing yet I am exhausted during the day and I definitely need my naps.
Avatar f tn I just started taking nuvigil. Does anyone know how long before it works or if it is worth the extreme price.
