Avatar n tn It’s the ONLY medicine that puts you into rem sleep and it’s a medicine that you can’t pick up at your pharmacy. Look up the Xyrem success program & if it sounds like something you might be interested in... you can discuss this with your sleep specialist. Most General practitioners don’t know enough about about this medicine. It’s usually prescribed by doctors that specialize in sleep disorders & especially those of us with Narcolepsy.
Avatar f tn Diagnosis is relatively easy when all the symptoms of narcolepsy are present. Two tests that are commonly used in diagnosing narcolepsy are the polysomnogram and the multiple sleep latency test which are usually performed by a sleep specialist. The drowsiness is normally treated using amphetamine-like stimulants.

Avatar f tn Although the pt has RLS and PLMS, the arousal associated with these do not likely explain EDS- given a short overall sleep and REM latency, consider narcolepsy clinically. I had 156 arousals, 110 spontaneous, the rest due to limb movement. I also spent most of my sleep time in sleep stages 1 and 2, whith REM episodes scattered randomly. I had no time in stage 3, and when I had REM sleep it was from wake to REM with no progression through the other cycles.
535822 tn?1443976780 A new review published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE confirms that Pandemrix, a swine flu vaccine produced by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is responsible for causing an up to 1700 percent increase in narcolepsy among children and teenagers under 17 years of age. Based on their findings, a cohort of scientists has determined that narcolepsy rates increased significantly following mass vaccination campaigns with Pandemrix.
11941637 tn?1422287346 I began developing symptoms of narcolepsy in high school, however, due to a lack of understanding at the time, it was not diagnosed until I was 23. My grandfather on maternal side had Parkinson's as long as I can remember, and I recently learned of a history of Lupus on paternal side; including grandmother, two aunts and my father himself. As a child, I always remember my grandfather, with his tremors, being prone to falling asleep any time he sat down.
Avatar m tn First of all, I'm sorry the doctor who ordered your testing didn't go more in depth in explaining the results to you. The information I'm going to give you here is based strictly upon the diagnostic criteria for different conditions; doctors use a combination of test results and diagnostic guidelines AND clinical expertise to reach diagnosis and treatment decisions, so there is no guarantee that this information pertains to your case in particular.
739988 tn?1386672969 I have narcolepsy (along w/ many other diseases). Along with the narcolepsy comes severe insomnia. On top of that, my body adapts to sleeping medications rapidly. In addition, I am on the last ditch Rx sleeping med that my team of three drs can come up with (general practioner, sleep specialist, psychiatrist). The med is Rimeron and I've been on it less than a week....it will be useless soon.
Avatar f tn I am a 74 year old Female and I am taking 20mg of Ritalin SR in the AM and 25mg of Imipram for the cataplexy in the PM. I get about 2 to 4 hrs sleep and the rest of the night I toss and turn. My Dr. told me she doesn't give meds for her patients to sleep. I am concerned about not sleeping and then taking Ritalin to keep me awake during the day.I feel my health will be affected. Is this the normal way to treat my condition?
Avatar f tn I stopped taking birth control recently because the medicine for narcolepsy makes it not work - I had been on it since I was 15 because of my heavy bleeding. When I was a baby I also had problems using the bathroom and I would become severally constipated. Recently, I have been having bright blood in my stool and streaking the paper and sometimes sharp pain.
Avatar f tn The second study only consisted of 4 studies because they said it was clear I had narcolepsy and there was no use in doing the last nap. Now, I don't know how people with narcolepsy usually sleep at night, but once I am asleep I am pretty much 'dead.' I don't hear anything, I don't move around much, and I have an extremely hard time getting up in the morning. As my first sleep doctor said,"you are pretty much just knocked out.
Avatar f tn Go to a neurologist specialing in sleep medicine. Frequent awakenings are a hallmark of several disorders, including sleep apnea and narcolepsy. If you find yourself waking up with headaches, having cold sweats or feeling out of breath, apnea is a real possibility. Try sleeping on your side and if you have a stuffy nose, get some afrin to use only at night. I have narcolepsy and had pretty much identical symptoms to yours. It's not like on TV. Best wishes.
Avatar n tn re getting into before you let anyone do a nerve block at the spinal level. See a physical medicine specialist or pain clinic. Your insurance carrier should have one in network. And a pain clinic isn't just for treatment, they diagnose as well. Physical medicine have methods for diagnosing sources of pain without nerve blocks. Kaiser has both departments under one roof. The podiatrist and orthopedic surgeon wanted to inject me as a cop out.
Avatar f tn s done a 1000 sleep latency tests and never had anyone fall asleep during all 5 nap times, fall asleep so quickly and dream too. She mentioned narcolepsy and hypersomnilance. Sometimes I Amos tired in the morning that I can't open my eyes or move. What is going on? I'm very frightened. And, I just got diagnosed 2 days ago with bad laryngopharyngeal reflux. Any thoughts are appreciated.
208141 tn?1229873260 See a sleep center. Recurrent "Bells Palsy" is actually very characteristic of narcolepsy with cataplexy. In fact, often times, it's not "Bells Palsy," but cataplexy. Viruses and some vaccines (namely the H1N1) can actually precipitate this, but it can happen seemingly in random fashion, too. It doesn't look the way you think it looks. Common misdiagnoses are depression, epilepsy, and migraines.
Avatar m tn I would describe the pain as deep (feels like it is in the bone), sharp/stabbing (Severity a 7-9 on a scale of 10 - where 10 is excruciating pain) and short in duration (lasts 3-10 seconds). It occurs frequently throughout my day and randomly in different places on my body (i.e. ribs, shoulder, upper and lower arms, fingers, upper and lower legs and sometimes my head). I'm also always fatigued, sleepy and low energy, but I keep myself moving and motivated.

2018891 tn?1329003897 Hi everyone I was diagnosed in 2010 with Narcolepsy & Cataplexy. One thing that I've been wondering, does anyone here get a severe headache after a cataplexic episode/sleep attack? I was in the hospital for a week in october because I kept "passing out" although that's not what I called it. I would feel strange, fall over, and be completely limp for 30ish seconds. Then I would get up and sometimes have trouble walking and a few hours later I would get a MASSIVE headache.
Avatar f tn Do you know if it is fairly common to have both conditions of epilepsy and narcolepsy for an individual? It seems to go hand in hand on these postings. We have changed is meds several times since August and his levels are showing to be fine, at this point. The 24 EEG should be a good test to help clarify his condition. I would also like to get a sleep study done, as you mentioned. I hope we can get this under control before the nice weather gets here.

Avatar f tn symptoms disappeared with some quality sleep over time. A diagnosis of narcolepsy can radically affect your life in regards to driving license rights and insurability. I wouldn't accept that label until there's nothing else to do to help your symptoms. Then after that, it is what it is.
Avatar f tn If you have any of these things, or all. I would suggest looking in to Narcolepsy (or sleep apnea). But the most important thing, even if you don't have any of these symptoms, is to remember that you are experiencing Excessive Daytime sleepiness. This is key when talking to any doctors, because saying you are 'tired' is not the same thing as being extremely exhausted to the point where you can't help but dozing in non-active environments (such as class or while watching tv).
Avatar n tn memory problems, insomnia symptoms, chronic pain, and twitchy feelings in muscles are actually very characteristic of narcolepsy with cataplexy, and it can be exacerbated by the hormone shifts that happen with menstrual cycles. In fact, often times, people don't have "Bells Palsy," but cataplexy. Viruses and some vaccines (namely the H1N1) can actually precipitate this, but it can happen seemingly in random fashion, too.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with CFIDS in 1994. Narcolepsy in 2005. I get basically no stage 4 or Rem sleep at night. Its no wonder why our mind and muscles can't heal themselves. I can go into almost instant dreaming during day (MSLT naps). I haven't been able to get anyone to help me figure out how to correct my sleep cycle. If you get any ideas, let me know. (I am on meds to help sleep and keep me awake at the right times, but it hasn't helped the sleep cycles.
1287446 tn?1313947638 Hi everyone. I am not familiar with Narcolepsy or sleep disorders in general but my sleep has always been different. Typically, I fight daytime sleepiness with caffeine. In prior years, the caffeine has been a lot but I’ve lowered it significantly.
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
