Narcolepsy gene dogs

Common Questions and Answers about Narcolepsy gene dogs

narcolepsy

Avatar f tn Emerging treatments being investigated for narcolepsy include hypocretin replacement, hypocretin gene therapy, stem cell transplant, skin temperature manipulation and immunotherapy, but further research is needed to confirm their effectiveness. So, discuss the various options with your doctor and hope you find a balance. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Probably the biggest reason that it seems that white dogs are more afflicted with allergies than other color dogs is because white is oftentimes associated with genetic defects in breeds where white is not considered an accepted color. Too many people today play on the ignorance of others when it comes to breeding and selling dogs. Breeds have colors that are acceptable for a reason, and white is not usually considered an accepted color.
Avatar n tn There are only a handful of breeds that are affected by the dilution gene, and the Newfoundland is one such breed. The dilution gene affects eumelanin, a pigment responsible for the black color, and phaeomelanin, a pigment responsible for brown colors. The resulting color of a dilution in the brown gene is a color called Isabella, which is a creamy tan/almost whitish color.
Avatar n tn t realize at the time but he apparently checked my blood for a Narcolepsy gene in which the result says of the 6 possible genes I am positive for 4 of them????? I did a sleep study in which they had me to the 5 naps 2 hours apart however according to the results I never made it into REM sleep but my Neurologist also told me they should not have done the test because I was on Zoloft and it impairs the results?
Avatar f tn The Shetland Sheepdog is one of the breeds in which some individuals carry the MDR1 gene for drug sensitivity, and imodium is one of the drugs that dogs with that gene are sensitive to. This means you should be especially careful in giving imodium to a Sheltie. Especially if you have one of the smaller Shelties, there might be very little margin for error. I would only give imodium to a Sheltie if it was prescribed by a vet. It might be okay -- but talk to the vet.
Avatar f tn t know of any tick control products that are considered to be unsafe for dogs with the MDR1 mutation. The list of drugs that are known to be a problem for dogs with the MDR1 gene is a fairly short list. If you know of any tick control drugs that are on the list, please post. Regarding the different names that a drug may be known as, there are generally only two -- the generic name and the trade name. Some compounds, if they are not patented, will only have a generic name.
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
1287446 tn?1313947638 Hi everyone. I am not familiar with Narcolepsy or sleep disorders in general but my sleep has always been different. Typically, I fight daytime sleepiness with caffeine. In prior years, the caffeine has been a lot but I’ve lowered it significantly.
Avatar f tn I have Narcolepsy- My vitamin B 12 level is 235- should it be higher for my condition?
Avatar f tn Although the pt has RLS and PLMS, the arousal associated with these do not likely explain EDS- given a short overall sleep and REM latency, consider narcolepsy clinically. I had 156 arousals, 110 spontaneous, the rest due to limb movement. I also spent most of my sleep time in sleep stages 1 and 2, whith REM episodes scattered randomly. I had no time in stage 3, and when I had REM sleep it was from wake to REM with no progression through the other cycles.
Avatar n tn The combination of this study and my first MSLT nap study produced a perfect pattern for diagnosis of Narcolepsy. Has there ever been a study to look at the coorelation between the 2 diseases. Would many CFS sufferers be classified narcoleptic if they took the appropriate test? Narcolepsy leads back to hippothalmus and lack of production of hypocretin/orexin(?). Seems like all things lead to hippothalmus. Thank you!
Avatar n tn After all we know that merle, the gene that makes Australian Shepherds and related dogs a pretty combo of colors is also a semi lethal gene... Cross two merle dogs, and you may get a deaf, possibly a blind pup out of it. Perhaps if we were severely concerned for dog health, perhaps it may be a good idea to just eliminate this gene altogether and not breed any merle dogs or carriers of that gene? But chances are that won’t happen.
Avatar n tn Some dogs are genetically predisposed to this. Has your Vet checked this? No other bald spots? What food are you feeding? You might try a product cakked Missing Link. You can also try adding some coconut oil to her food. If I remember, it is about 1/4 tsp per pound of dog. You can just add it to the food. You can also rub a little on the bald areas. Your Vet may want to rule out other causes or possible do some blood work to check thyroid.
Avatar f tn i was wondering if i should be tested for narcolepsy, or if diagnosed with narcolepsy would they prescribe me to something similar to adderrall? if this were the case, being tested would not matter much if they would give me the same medications anyways. I just dont want to be misdiagnosed and on the wrong medication for the rest of my life.
5952632 tn?1377267069 Today I was brainstorming with a friend about meds for this and headaches and she asked me about the MTFHR gene mutation. I have had the test in the past and it showed that I have the double gene mutation. In doing research, I found medical studies showing a direct link to the homocysteine levels and the GFR levels for the kidneys. As this is not a normal blood test, it was not tested for while I was in the hospital.
535822 tn?1443976780 A new review published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE confirms that Pandemrix, a swine flu vaccine produced by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is responsible for causing an up to 1700 percent increase in narcolepsy among children and teenagers under 17 years of age. Based on their findings, a cohort of scientists has determined that narcolepsy rates increased significantly following mass vaccination campaigns with Pandemrix.
Avatar n tn Hi, Calm down and just let your cat know where the food, water and litter are. I assure you that in your cat's own time he/she will begin to feel less fear and come around. I had to take in my daughter's cat into my house with 2 dogs and a cat. Her cat stayed as far away as possible for months, and when we saw her on the stairs and we reached to try to pet her she swiped at us.
Avatar m tn Yes, narcolepsy can result in disturbed nighttime sleep. Narcolepsy can only be diagnosed with a multiple sleep latency test during the day (usually preceded by an all night sleep study). Dr.
1745492 tn?1320198340 My husband was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy about 5 years ago and the narcolepsy is under control with 200 mg of Provigil. He had hypnogogic hallucinations, body jerks when falling sleep, imaginary conversations with no one, talked in his sleep, fell asleep driving, talking and even in activities you'd never imagine a male would fall asleep. He appears to always have had it since about puberty but it got worse as his sleep apnea did.
