narcolepsy

Avatar n tn i saw a show yesterday about narcolepsy and they mentioned a vaccination was given to a 13 year old girl and 2 hours later she was experiencing cataplexly (a paralyzing catatonic state that is a symptom of narcolepsy) but they did not say which vaccination.
729135 tn?1247495402 My MSLTs say I have Idiopathic Hypersomnia. The genetic panel says positive for HLA-DR2, DR7 and HLA DQ1, and DQ2. It also says that hypersomnolence does not have a genetic association. During my MSLT, my sleep latency naps were 2, 1.1, 3.1, and 3.1. During the 2nd nap, (<1) I didn't think I feel asleep because I was thinking about falling asleep, The test said no REM in any naps. Do I have narcolepsy or hypersomnia?
Avatar n tn Hi, narcolepsy and sleepwalking are different sleep disorders. Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnagogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. It can however be regulated with medications. So, ensure to take them regularly and follow up with your doctor. Regards.
Avatar f tn I have had MS since 1995. I have gone through many bouts of paralysis, blindness, hear loss, memory loss, confusion and now I have narcolepsy. Everyone thought I was crazy and didn't think it was serious.....although I had 11 incidences of falling asleep while driving. I work for Disability Rehabilitation Services and they hire alot of people with disabilities. If they see me and I am having facial paralysis (Bells Palsy) or dragging my left I have had MS since 1995.
871962 tn?1244730028 Think about adding medications, treatments and other issues relating to narcolepsy and hypersomnias to your sleep tracker. Insomnia and sleep apnea may be common sleep disorders, but not the only ones.
612876 tn?1355514495 The sleep specialist said that narcolepsy and dysautonomia are mediated in some of the same parts of the brain, and for reasons that aren't yet completely understood, people who have one tend to have higher rates of the other than healthy people. He said that this will make treatment of both disorders more complicated, obviously. But I am just so excited to have an answer finally!
Avatar m tn memory problems, insomnia symptoms, chronic pain, and twitchy feelings in muscles are actually very characteristic of narcolepsy with cataplexy, and it can be exacerbated by the hormone shifts that happen with menstrual cycles. In fact, often times, people don't have "Bells Palsy," but cataplexy. Viruses and some vaccines (namely the H1N1) can actually precipitate this, but it can happen seemingly in random fashion, too.
Avatar n tn See a sleep center. Recurrent "Bells Palsy," memory problems, insomnia symptoms, chronic pain, and twitchy feelings in muscles are actually very characteristic of narcolepsy with cataplexy. In fact, often times, it's not "Bells Palsy," but cataplexy. Viruses and some vaccines (especially the H1N1) can actually precipitate this, but it can happen seemingly in random fashion, too. Common misdiagnoses are depression, epilepsy, and migraines.
Avatar n tn ve been reading about narcolepsy, and although my sleep study did not indicate anything about it, I find one of its symptoms prevalent in my experience. Often, I seem to dream right when I fall asleep - not after the 90 minutes it's supposed to take to reach REM. I know this is true because sometimes I'll wake up only about a half hour after falling asleep, having already dreamt. Does anything other than narcolepsy cause this?
1287446 tn?1313947638 00 I’m exhausted and go home and sleep anywhere from 2-5 hours typically, waking up at night (usually) and staying up until anywhere from 2-4 am before getting another few hours of sleep. I’ve found this cycle works the best as far as getting me through the day and getting the most done. Generally one day a week, I will just come home and crash and sleep (of course not non-stop, but I’ll stay in bed) until the following morning when I have to get up for work.
Avatar n tn The combination of this study and my first MSLT nap study produced a perfect pattern for diagnosis of Narcolepsy. Has there ever been a study to look at the coorelation between the 2 diseases. Would many CFS sufferers be classified narcoleptic if they took the appropriate test? Narcolepsy leads back to hippothalmus and lack of production of hypocretin/orexin(?). Seems like all things lead to hippothalmus. Thank you!
Avatar f tn Narcolepsy can only be diagnosed with a multiple sleep latency test that is done during the day. Dr.
Avatar f tn A couple weeks ago i went to a big city to see a neurologist who told me I have cataplectic episodes and that I have narcolepsy. I have not had sleep studies or anything more. Could this REALLY be narcolepsy/cataplexy? Is it NECESSARY to get more diagnostic work?
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
Avatar f tn Is the methamphetamine for recreational use? Because then honestly, the length of time to "abstain" would be forever. I use a medication (prescription) for narcolepsy and they are letting me take it right up to the morning of my upcoming surgery. Surgery involves more than just the anesthesia. There is the pain management afterward and there are issues involved if someone is addicted to something like methamphetamine. It's like smoking.
Avatar f tn I have Narcolepsy- My vitamin B 12 level is 235- should it be higher for my condition?
Avatar f tn I think I have pregnancy rhinitis, which is basically a fancy word for coughing, sneezing, drainage, eye/head pressure. I've taken 2 days off work to rest and drink liquids. It's not helping! I've been hacking for 3 months, but now it's just tacked on all the other symptoms. Plus, every time I cough I pee myself:( this is my 2nd child, I have an 8 month old. I also have narcolepsy so my symptoms aggravate that too. Ladies, how on earth am I gonna make it through a work day?
Avatar f tn Learning as much about narcolepsy as possible and finding a support system can help patients and families deal with the practical and emotional effects of the disorder, and situations that might cause injury. This link may be helpful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcolepsy It would be best to see your doctor for definite diagnosis an proper management. Take care and keep us posted. and proper management.
Avatar f tn Narcolepsy is considered to be a distinct medical condition. It is possible to have both, but I don't think that's what your discussing. Most medications for ADD or ADHD are stimulants of one sort or another, and prescriptions for stimulants are often used to combat MS-related fatigue. I believe several of our community members use Provigil in this capacity. I don't have fatigue to that extent, so coffee usually does the trick. Hopefully folks with personal experience will chime in.
Avatar f tn If diagnosed with narcolepsy, and regulated and controlled with Meds can I still do whatever job? I want to be an under water welder, and I'm worried that once I get the diagnosis I won't be able to do the job I really want to do.

535822 tn?1443976780 A new review published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE confirms that Pandemrix, a swine flu vaccine produced by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is responsible for causing an up to 1700 percent increase in narcolepsy among children and teenagers under 17 years of age. Based on their findings, a cohort of scientists has determined that narcolepsy rates increased significantly following mass vaccination campaigns with Pandemrix.
Avatar n tn I sure hope it clears up. I don't want to be negative here but my husband woke up one morning and thought he had had a stroke. He was only 32 at the time and he's 37 now and still has that numbness on his left side of his face. Dr.'s told us it was from a viral infection. He had started to have an earache the night before but we didn't find an earache odd. So the doctors told him it normally clears up on it's own but in my husbands case it hasn't yet.
